Book The Fine Arts of the English School

Download or read book The Fine Arts of the English School written by John Britton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fine Arts of the English School: Illustrated by a Series of Engravings, From Paintings, Sculpture, and Architecture, of Eminent English Artists; With Ample Biographical, Critical, and Descriptive Essays, by Various Authors At a time when many splendid works are published, and in the progress of publication, to illustrate and exalt the ancient schools of art, and parti cularly that of the French; it is presumed that one devoted to the English School can neither be deemed irrelevant nor unacceptable: for the productions of our native Artists are at length gradually attaining their just appreciation. The best works of Reynolds, Hogarth, Wilson, Gainsborough, Mortimer, Wright, Romney, Barry, Opie, &c. Are now sought for with avidity, and treasured according to their respective merits. A British Institution is also formed to promote and cherish native Genius; and living Artists are laudably emulous of professional fame. Under such circumstances, an embellished literary work, truly English in every part of its construction, may, it is presumed, without arrogance, prefer its Claim to English patronage. Book excerpt: Artists' books have emerged over the last 25 years as the quintessential contemporary art form, addressing subjects as diverse as poetry and politics, incorporating a full spectrum of artistic media and bookmaking methods, and taking every conceivable form. Female painters, sculptors, calligraphers, and printmakers, as well a growing community of hobbyists, have played a primary role in developing this new mode of artistic expression. The Book as Art presents more than 100 of the most engaging women's artist books created by major fine artists such as Meret Oppenheim, May Stevens, Kara Walker, and Renee Stout and distinguished book artists such as Susan King, Ruth Laxson, Claire Van Vliet, and Julie Chen. Culled from over 800 unique or limited-edition volumes held by the National Museum of Women in the Arts, these books explore the form as a container for ideas. Descriptions of the works are accompanied by colorful illustrations and reflections by their makers, along with essays by leading scholars and a lively introduction by the most famous book artist in our culture, best-selling author Audrey Niffenegger. The exquisitely crafted objects in the The Book as Art are sure to provoke unexpected and surprising conclusions about what constitutes a book. Book American Genre Painting

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elizabeth Johns
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 1991-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780300057546
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book American Genre Painting written by Elizabeth Johns and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American genre painting flourished in the thirty years before the Civil War, a period of rapid social change that followed the election of President Andrew Jackson. It has long been assumed that these paintings--of farmers, western boatmen and trappers, blacks both slave and free, middle-class women, urban urchins, and other everyday folk--served as records of an innocent age, reflecting a Jacksonian optimism and faith in the common man. In this enlightening book Elizabeth Johns presents a different interpretation--arguing that genre paintings had a social function that related in a more significant and less idealistic way to the political and cultural life of the time. Analyzing works by William Sidney Mount, George Caleb Bingham, David Gilmore Blythe, Lilly Martin Spencer, and others, Johns reveals the humor and cynicism in the paintings and places them in the context of stories about the American character that appeared in sources ranging from almanacs and newspapers to joke books and political caricature. She compares the productions of American painters with those of earlier Dutch, English, and French genre artists, showing the distinctive interests of American viewers. Arguing that art is socially constructed to meet the interests of its patrons and viewers, she demonstrates that the audience for American genre paintings consisted of New Yorkers with a highly developed ambition for political and social leadership, who enjoyed setting up citizens of the new democracy as targets of satire or condescension to satisfy their need for superiority. It was this network of social hierarchies and prejudices--and not a blissful celebration of American democracy--that informed the look and the richly ambiguous content of genre painting.
