Book Quality Circle Time in the Secondary School

Download or read book Quality Circle Time in the Secondary School written by Jenny Mosley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jenny Mosley's quality circle time model involves establishing an on-going, timetabled process of circle-meetings for adults and children. As a basis for teaching relationship skills, enhancing self-esteem and building a positive behaviour management and anti-bullying policy, circle time should not only increase confidence and "emotional intelligence" in pupils, but should also contribute towards a positive whole-school ethos. This classic text provides a rationale, framework and whole-school model for quality circle time specifically for secondary schools and further education colleges. Fully revised and updated, the authors offer over 100 activities and practical strategies to help build teachers' confidence and circle time skills. The book aims to enable teachers to sustain this approach within their SEAL syllabus, tutorial time, subject teaching, or as part of their work with pupils with special educational needs.

Download or read book Closing the Circle written by Sean A. Walmsley and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-03-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Closing the Circle, Sean Walmsley offers education practitioners at all levels—district and school administrators, curriculum supervisors, staff developers, literacy coaches, classroom teachers, and special education teachers—a coherent framework along with practical advice for setting K–12 language arts expectations and for effectively guiding instruction, assessment, reporting, and data analysis. Distilled from the author’s extensive experience working with schools and districts, the framework enables educators to prioritize literacy learning and work together more productively to achieve better literacy outcomes for all students. The innovative framework includes five major elements: (1) a set of clearly defined literacy attributes (concise expectations for what students should know, do, understand, and experience in the language arts); (2) instructional contributions that best support students, including struggling learners, in acquiring the attributes; (3) appropriate assessments for tracking students’ progress; (4) reporting practices that clearly explain the progress achieved; and (5) rigorous analysis of data to inform instruction. The model embraces a broad conception of literacy and includes expectations for reading, writing, listening, and speaking as well as viewing and representing, making it especially suitable for learning in the digital era.

Book HC 145 Life Lessons PSHE and SRE in Schools

Download or read book HC 145 Life Lessons PSHE and SRE in Schools written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Education Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2015 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report investigates the actions taken by the Government to improve PSHE following Ofsted's finding in 2013 that the subject required improvement in 40% of schools. It concludes that the Government's current strategy for improving PSHE is weak, with a mismatch between the priority that ministers claim they give PSHE and the steps that have been taken to improve the quality of teaching in the subject. There is an overwhelming demand for statutory sex and relationships education - from teachers, parents and young people themselves. Statutory status will help ensure investment in training for teachers to improve its provision. SRE forms an important part of any school's efforts to safeguard young people from abuse, and is particularly needed to protect the most vulnerable children. PSHE builds character and resilience, and will help young people to live happy and healthy lives. The Committee recommends: all schools should be required to run a regular consultation with parents on the school's SRE provision; the parental right to withdraw their child from elements of SRE should be retained; the Government should formally endorse and issue the SRE guidance produced by Brook, the Sex Education Forum and the PSHE Association and promote this more actively to schools and governors; the funding of continuous professional development for PSHE teachers and school nurses should be reinstated; Ofsted should resume its regular subject surveys of PSHE provision; SRE should be renamed Relationships and Sex Education - RSE - to emphasise the relationships element of the subject.
