Working capital management maximizes the level of firms to an optimal value. With time evidence has shown a significant impact of working capital on the performance of firms. Working capital management addresses the management of companies' short-term capital and the objective of working capital management is to endorse satisfying profitability and minimize liabilities.Hence, the study examines the impact of working capital management on automotive manufacturing firms listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange for the period 2007-2016. Profitability was measured by the performance of the firms by the rate of return on assets as the dependent variable. The cash conversion cycle, average payment period, inventory conversion period, and average collection period determined the working capital of the firms as independent working capital variables. Moreover, the control variable is firm size. The data was examined using EViews (version 10). The finding reveals that the average collection period, inventory conversion period, average payment period, and cash conversion cycle have an insignificant negative relationship with profitability. In the case of firm size, its relationship with profitability is positively significant. The value of R square reveals that our model is capturing 58% variation from independent and control variables. The value of F statistics indicates that our model is well fitted. In general collection payments from customers earlier and paying suppliers longer, keeping the product in stock less time, are all related to positive performance. Therefore, managers can increase a firm's profitability by improving the performance of management of working capital components. The study in this case is done with delicate methods and proper sample models taken from verified sources.

The impact of working capital management on profitability is analyzed by computing Pearson's simple correlation coefficients, multiple correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis between Operating Profit and the selected independent variables affecting the working capital. Few variables show a strong and positive correlation with the profit whereas some others do not have. Hence, the result concludes that there is a moderate relationship between working capital management and firm's profitability. It can be said that there exists a relationship between the efficiency of working capital and the profitability, but the relationship is not statistically significant.

Book Negative Working Capital and Profitability

Download or read book Negative Working Capital and Profitability written by CMA(Dr.) Ashok Panigrahi and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though there are too many researches has been conducted on the topic working capital management and its impact on profitability, but there is no major research has been done for the negative working capital and its impact on profitability. All the studies on working capital generally states that for the improvement in profitability we should manage our working capital effectively and most of the studies recommended to have good amount of working capital in the organization. All the researches on this topic conclude that the companies should avoid under-investment in working capital if they want higher profit margins. With this paper we made an attempt to study the profitability of organizations which generally operates with low or in the negative working capital zone and tried to find out whether it has any negative impact on the profitability or not. With negative working capital there can be a danger of insolvency but it is not true forever. If the company is having a good image in the market and good relation with their creditors it can get the benefit from the negative working capital also. The present study is an analysis of five top Indian cement companies' working capital and their profitability structure over a period of ten years. The result shows that though there is a positive relationship between working capital and profitability, yet it does not hold good for all the cases and that too always. We have seen companies generating good profit with a negative working capital as well as companies not able to generate good profit even with having good amount of positive working capital. However, it can be said that negative working capital indicates non-liquidity or less liquidity within the firm which is not desirable at each and every stages of business.

Book excerpt: One of the main reasons to name this book as Financial Management from an Emerging Market Perspective is to show the main differences of financial theory and practice in emerging markets other than the developed ones. Our many years of learning, teaching, and consulting experience have taught us that the theory of finance differs in developed and emerging markets. It is a well-known fact that emerging markets do not always share the same financial management problems with the developed ones. This book intends to show these differences, which could be traced to several characteristics unique to emerging markets, and these unique characteristics could generate a different view of finance theory in a different manner. As a consequence, different financial decisions, arrangements, institutions, and practices may evolve in emerging markets over time. The purpose of this book is to provide practitioners and academicians with a working knowledge of the different financial management applications and their use in an emerging market setting. Six main topics regarding the financial management applications in emerging markets are covered, and the context of these topics are "Capital Structure," "Market Efficiency and Market Models," "Merger and Acquisitions and Corporate Governance," "Working Capital Management," "Financial Economics and Digital Currency," and "Real Estate and Health Finance."
