Book Connecting People to Work

Download or read book Connecting People to Work written by Aspen Aspen Institute and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With many Americans striving to build their skills to get jobs in a rapidly changing economy, the workforce development field has seen a significant increase in sector strategies, which focus on the specific skills that employers need and address the real-world challenges facing low-income workers. Maureen Conway and Robert P. Giloth deliver a robust volume featuring perspectives from prominent nonprofit and philanthropy leaders, academics and researchers to capture how sector-based workforce development, in industries ranging from health to construction, has evolved over 30 years - and how it can continue to grow and inform future investments and policy decisions. The book offers lessons for policymakers, philanthropic investors, researchers and local leaders interested in policies and practices that support strong businesses while helping struggling Americans connect to good jobs. Connecting People to Work features case studies of organizations implementing sector-based workforce development strategies in the health care, construction, manufacturing and restaurant industries, and highlights how policy and economic changes and new practices among education and training institutions are affecting workforce development efforts. It also includes evaluation results and a review of major sector-financing strategies. The book discusses the need for these workforce strategies at a time when many people are out of work or underemployed and face a labor market that is difficult to navigate. Too many workers today earn too little to make ends meet, and they often lack the time or resources to participate in local education programs that may or may not help them find work. Many low-wage workers often need additional support as they go through training, an approach generally adopted by sector strategies. The results chronicled in the book make clear that such strategies can help create viable opportunities for more Americans to gain the skills they need to achieve greater financial stability.

Book Politics Jobs and Workforce Development

Download or read book Politics Jobs and Workforce Development written by Malo Hutson and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research study examines the role that workforce intermediaries within Boston play in creating career pathways for economically disadvantaged, under-skilled residents in the local health care industry. Using a case study analysis, this study compares the outcomes of two workforce intermediaries-one which is employer-led and the other which is led by a community development corporation. Despite the proliferation of new workforce intermediaries around the country and the increased amount of funding to support them from the private and public sectors, these institutions are limited in their ability to increase the supply of a skilled workforce and to change the demand-side of the labor market. However, given the current structural holes in the publicly funded workforce development system, workforce intermediaries play a critical role in serving populations who otherwise would have a difficult time entering into the regional labor market.

Book Putting Skill to Work

Download or read book Putting Skill to Work written by Nichola Lowe and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An argument for reimagining skill in a way that can extend economic opportunity to workers at the bottom of the labor market. The United States has a jobs problem—not enough well-paying jobs to go around and not enough clear pathways leading to them. Skill development is critical for addressing this employment crisis, but there are many unresolved questions about who has skill, how it is attained, and whose responsibility it is to build skills over time. In this book, Nichola Lowe tells the stories of pioneering workforce intermediaries—nonprofits, unions, community colleges—that harness this ambiguity around skill to extend economic opportunity to workers at the bottom of the labor market. Skill development confers shared value to both workers and employers because it lies at the intersection of their respective interests. Connecting skill to economic inequality, Lowe calls for solutions that push employers to accept greater responsibility for skill development. She examines real-world examples of workplace intermediaries throughout the United States, exploring in detail the work of manufacturing-focused organizations in Chicago and Milwaukee, and a network of community colleges in North Carolina that coordinates training for biopharmaceutical manufacturers. As workforce intermediaries help employers reinterpret skill, they also convince them to implement inclusive work-based systems that extend family-sustaining wages and better working conditions across the entire workforce. With renewed policy emphasis on skill development, these opportunity-rich solutions can be further expanded—ensuring workers across the entire educational spectrum contribute skills that drive innovation forward and share the gains they generate for the twenty-first century workplace.

Book The Workforce Intermediary s Role in Entry level low Wage Position Recruiting Practices

Download or read book The Workforce Intermediary s Role in Entry level low Wage Position Recruiting Practices written by Peter K. Urda and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Employer hiring practices of filling entry-level/low wage positions influences the local labor market. Workforce intermediaries are in a unique position to influence employer recruiting practices for filling entry-level/low wage positions. By understanding workforce intermediary (WI) influence on these practices, they could benefit employers and employees by matching the two systematically. This study explored the ways in which employers fill entry-level/low wage positions in situations where a WI/employer partnership exists. The author performed a case study of a Midwest workforce intermediary program, describing the ways in which they influence the entry-level/low wage recruiting practices of partner employers. Then, an analysis of two employers recruiting processes was conducted to specifically look at examples of Workforce intermediary influence on employer entry/level position recruiting practices. The study found that the WI/employer partnership created a complex recruiting system. Additional screening and selection recruitment stages were added to the partnership program compared to traditional employer only models. The workforce intermediary played the largest role in the recruiting system. It performed all the active screening of candidates, selection of participants, and training of participants. Employers did not involve their own recruiting staff in the partnership. The employers did not change their recruiting practices for filling entry-level! low wage positions. However, employers were involved with many passive screening techniques in the partnership, and held the final decision as to who would get hired in any entry-level position. There was no clear answer if employers planned on changing their entry level! low wage position recruiting practices to accommodate participants completing the pathway program. This study also notes two definitions that were created for entry-level positions. The first definition described entry level as those positions that require only basic knowledge and skills, with no clear career growth path within the organization. The second definition was defined as those positions that required additional training and skills over basic skills, and that led to career growth within that employer.

Book Building Lasting Connections to Employers

Download or read book Building Lasting Connections to Employers written by Richard Lueking and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well-supported employer participation is essential to successful workforce development programs. The Workforce Investment Act (WIA), which funds a system of programs throughout the country that assist individuals, including youth with disabilities, in overcoming barriers to employment through job training and placement, gave heightened attention to the role of employers. There are important provisions in WIA designed to attract more employers to the nation's workforce investment system, including the establishment of Workforce Investment Boards (WIBs), which are policy making entities led by employers. This document discusses the function of community-wide intermediaries. (Contains 2 tables.) [Brief also prepared by the National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability for Youth.].
