Book Words Works and Ways of Knowing

Download or read book Words Works and Ways of Knowing written by Sara Paretsky and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular and groundbreaking crime novelist Sara Paretsky earned a PhD in history at the University of Chicago in the mid-1970s, with a dissertation on moral philosophy and religion in New England in the early and mid-nineteenth century. This edition of that work analyzes attempts by theologians at the Andover Seminary to square and secure Calvinist religious beliefs with emerging knowledge from history and the sciences. As Paretsky shows, the open-minded scholasticism of these theologians paradoxically led to the weakening of their intellectual credibility as conventional religious belief structures became discredited, and this failure incited reactionary forces within Calvinism. Leading religious scholar Amanda Porterfield provides an afterword discussing where Paretsky s work fits into the contemporary study of religion. Paretsky s foreword offers a sobering picture of what it was like to be a female graduate student at the University of Chicago in the 1970s."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hard work required to make God real, how it changes the people who do it, and why it helps explain the enduring power of faith How do gods and spirits come to feel vividly real to people—as if they were standing right next to them? Humans tend to see supernatural agents everywhere, as the cognitive science of religion has shown. But it isn’t easy to maintain a sense that there are invisible spirits who care about you. In How God Becomes Real, acclaimed anthropologist and scholar of religion T. M. Luhrmann argues that people must work incredibly hard to make gods real and that this effort—by changing the people who do it and giving them the benefits they seek from invisible others—helps to explain the enduring power of faith. Drawing on ethnographic studies of evangelical Christians, pagans, magicians, Zoroastrians, Black Catholics, Santeria initiates, and newly orthodox Jews, Luhrmann notes that none of these people behave as if gods and spirits are simply there. Rather, these worshippers make strenuous efforts to create a world in which invisible others matter and can become intensely present and real. The faithful accomplish this through detailed stories, absorption, the cultivation of inner senses, belief in a porous mind, strong sensory experiences, prayer, and other practices. Along the way, Luhrmann shows why faith is harder than belief, why prayer is a metacognitive activity like therapy, why becoming religious is like getting engrossed in a book, and much more. A fascinating account of why religious practices are more powerful than religious beliefs, How God Becomes Real suggests that faith is resilient not because it provides intuitions about gods and spirits—but because it changes the faithful in profound ways.

Book Anishinaabe Ways of Knowing and Being

Download or read book Anishinaabe Ways of Knowing and Being written by Dr Lawrence W Gross and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-07-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very few studies have examined the worldview of the Anishinaabeg from within the culture itself and none have explored the Anishinaabe worldview in relation to their efforts to maintain their culture in the present-day world. This book fills that gap. Focusing mainly on the Minnesota Anishinaabeg, Lawrence Gross explores how their worldview works to create a holistic way of living. However, as Gross also argues, the Anishinaabeg saw the end of their world early in the 20th century and experienced what he calls 'postapocalypse stress syndrome.' As such, the book further explores how the values engendered by the worldview of the Anishinaabeg are finding expression in the modern world as they seek to rebuild their society.

Book Pious Impostures and Unproven Words

Download or read book Pious Impostures and Unproven Words written by Steven C. Scheer and published by Pious Impostures and Unproven. This book was released on 1990 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pious Impostures and Unproven Words applies deconstruction to nineteenth-century American romances and to the concept of the traditional liberal arts education. Offering new readings of such American classics as The Scarlet Letter and Huckleberry Finn, this volume shows that deconstruction is not necessarily antagonistic to traditional readings of literary texts. By establishing a clear relationship between deconstruction and the concept of a liberal arts education, Pious Impostures reveals that though deconstruction (as such) is "new," its most useful and usable tenets reach all the way back to the Bible and clearly overlap certain medieval and romantic ideas. Contents: Preface; Introduction; The Fact/Fiction Hierarchy Revisited; Errors of Truth: Deconstruction in The Scarlet Letter; The Subversive Lie of Expedient Truth in Pierre: Or The Ambiguities; Real Lies and Fictitious Truths in Huckleberry Finn.
