Book excerpt: WORDS of a MAN is a selection of poems written by transformational speaker, Yusef Salaam, during his wrongful incarceration (1987-1995) in connection with the Central Park Jogger case. The case attracted nationwide attention and was the subject of many articles and books, both during and after the trials. Convictions were overturned when the real rapist - a since convicted murderer serving a life sentence - confessed to the crimes and proved to be a DNA match. Ten years later, documentarian Ken Burns, his daughter Sarah Burns and her husband David McMahon released the award-winning film, The Central Park Five, which told of this travesty from the perspective of Yusef and his cohorts.. These writings - addressing a wide range of subjects from the justice system, to love, and black life in general - helped to get a young Yusef Salaam through several years of unjust imprisonment. He hopes they will be a source of inspiration for others - especially young men of color.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a quarter of a century, Ildefonso, a Mexican Indian, lived in total isolation, set apart from the rest of the world. He wasn't a political prisoner or a social recluse, he was simply born deaf and had never been taught even the most basic language. Susan Schaller, then a twenty-four-year-old graduate student, encountered him in a class for the deaf where she had been sent as an interpreter and where he sat isolated, since he knew no sign language. She found him obviously intelligent and sharply observant but unable to communicate, and she felt compelled to bring him to a comprehension of words. The book vividly conveys the challenge, the frustrations, and the exhilaration of opening the mind of a congenitally deaf person to the concept of language. This second edition includes a new chapter and afterword.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Man is a / fascinating animal’, Kenneth Sherman writes, and it is this fascination that drives the narrative in Words for Elephant Man. Written in the voice of Joseph Merrick, the ‘Elephant Man’ plagued with a disfiguring condition that ravaged much of his body, Sherman reveals his subject to be more than just a living fascination. Sherman’s Merrick, acutely observant, is equally fascinated by those around him. Using found lines from historical record interwoven with his own beautifully rendered verse, Sherman’s collection triumphs as a haunting, eloquent portrait of a man whose body was both disabler and enabler, a man who was both a commodity and a salesman, mechanical and organic, and whose extraordinary circumstances overshadowed the remarkably ordinary desires he shared with humanity. Sherman’s Merrick is observant, clever and authentic, and possessed of a voice that resonates through the years and into the hearts and minds of readers.

Book The Man Who Tasted Words

Download or read book The Man Who Tasted Words written by Dr. Guy Leschziner and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Man Who Tasted Words, Guy Leschziner leads readers through the senses and how, through them, our brain understands or misunderstands the world around us. Vision, hearing, taste, smell, and touch are what we rely on to perceive the reality of our world. Our senses are the conduits that bring us the scent of a freshly brewed cup of coffee or the notes of a favorite song suddenly playing on the radio. But are they really that reliable? The Man Who Tasted Words shows that what we perceive to be absolute truths of the world around us is actually a complex internal reconstruction by our minds and nervous systems. The translation into experiences with conscious meaning—the pattern of light and dark on the retina that is transformed into the face of a loved one, for instance—is a process that is invisible, undetected by ourselves and, in most cases, completely out of our control. In The Man Who Tasted Words, neurologist Guy Leschziner explores how our nervous systems define our worlds and how we can, in fact, be victims of falsehoods perpetrated by our own brains. In his moving and lyrical chronicles of lives turned upside down by a disruption in one or more of their five senses, he introduces readers to extraordinary individuals, like one man who actually “tasted” words, and shows us how sensory disruptions like that have played havoc, not only with their view of the world, but with their relationships as well. The cases Leschziner shares in The Man Who Tasted Words are extreme, but they are also human, and teach us how our lives and what we perceive as reality are both ultimately defined by the complexities of our nervous systems.

Book 7 Greatest Words of the Greatest Man Ever Lived

Download or read book 7 Greatest Words of the Greatest Man Ever Lived written by Rev. Dr. T. P. Samuel Stuart and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2024-03-18 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author has been preaching on these seven Words of Christ from the cross for more than 50 years, on Good Fridays, in various Churches, including the Holy Trinity English Church (CSI), at Tuticorin Town, where he is ministering as a pastor. His book on the ‘Seven Words of Christ,’ in Tamil, written in 2007, has been well received by the Tamil speaking Christians, all over the world. To share the benefit with more children of God, he desired to publish the book in English. This book, however, is not a translation of the Tamil book. Rather, he has written afresh in English, in a simple language, so that any person with a basic knowledge of English could understand. The Message of the book: About two thousand years ago, the Heavenly Virtue (The Holy One) came to the world, in human form, in the Person of our Lord Jesus Christ; the religious men of His time, instead of prostrating at His feet in worship, they had Him nailed to the Cross. But our Lord in His death, saved humankind from (1) the bondage of sin, (2) the slavery of Satan, (3) the fear of death, and (4) the Great Judgment of God. By His death upon the cross, Christ revealed His eternal opposition of God to sin. In God’s redemptive Plan of the Ages, the salvation of man necessitated the vicarious suffering-cum-death of God, the Creator. Jesus’ life shows us how one should live the human life in this God-hating world. In Him, the ‘Perfect Goodness’ is expressed in a human character. He, the Son of God, came to the world and lived a ‘Perfect Life’ which is unique from any other life that was ever lived or has ever since been lived.

In Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, Steve lets women inside the mindset of a man and sheds light on concepts and questions such as: The Ninety Day Rule: Ford requires it of its employees. Should you require it of your man? The five questions every woman should ask a man to determine how serious he is. And much more . . . Sometimes funny, sometimes direct, but always truthful, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man is a book you must read if you want to understand how men think when it comes to relationships.

Book excerpt: A compilation of inspiring and motivational quotes from Elon Musk, “the world’s most remarkable living entrepreneur” (Chris Anderson, curator of TED). Elon Musk, the South African-born entrepreneur who made his first fortune with Internet companies such as PayPal, has risen to global prominence as the visionary CEO of both Tesla Motors and SpaceX, two companies with self-proclaimed missions to improve life as we know it and better secure the future of humanity. For the first time, the most insightful, thought-provoking, and revealing quotes from this entrepreneurial engineer have been compiled into a single book. Rocket Man: Elon Musk in His Own Words is a comprehensive guide to the inner workings of the man dubbed “the real Tony Stark.” Hundreds of his best quotes, comprising thoughts on business, clean energy, innovation, engineering, technology, space, electric vehicles, entrepreneurship, life lessons, and more, provide an intimate and direct look into Silicon Valley’s most ambitious industrialist. How could a young man who at one time seemed like “just” another Internet entrepreneur have gone on to build two highly disruptive companies and innovate technologies related to everything from electric batteries to rocket manufacturing? There’s no better way to learn than through his own words. This book curates Musk quotes from interviews, public appearances, online postings, company blogs, press releases, and more. What emerges is a “word portrait” of the man whose companies’ swift rise to the top will undoubtedly keep their status-quo competitors scrambling to keep up.
