Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate over women's roles in the Southern Baptist Convention's conservative ascendance is often seen as secondary to theological and biblical concerns. Elizabeth Flowers argues, however, that for both moderate and conservative Baptist women--all of whom had much at stake--disagreements that touched on their familial roles and ecclesial authority have always been primary. And, in the turbulent postwar era, debate over their roles caused fierce internal controversy. While the legacy of race and civil rights lingered well into the 1990s, views on women's submission to male authority provided the most salient test by which moderates were identified and expelled in a process that led to significant splits in the Church. In Flowers's expansive history of Southern Baptist women, the "woman question" is integral to almost every area of Southern Baptist concern: hermeneutics, ecclesial polity, missionary work, church-state relations, and denominational history. Flowers's analysis, part of the expanding survey of America's religious and cultural landscape after World War II, points to the South's changing identity and connects religious and regional issues to the complicated relationship between race and gender during and after the civil rights movement. She also shows how feminism and shifting women's roles, behaviors, and practices played a significant part in debates that simmer among Baptists and evangelicals throughout the nation today.

  • Author : Stephen Tu
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over one million unborn children are intentionally aborted every year in North America. Voiceless and helpless, their blood cries out. Will those of us who serve as pastors and preachers respond from our pulpits? Silence is not an option. We cannot keep quiet while thousands of our neighbors, made in the image of God, are being led to the slaughter every day. But neither should we condemn and vilify those who are complicit in their deaths. A truly pro-life pulpit ministry opposes the injustice of abortion with truth, courage and understanding. Tears mingled with hope, overflowing with grace. After all, the Christian faith is rooted in the good news of a Messiah who was once an embryo. Nine months before he was born, Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and for the next forty weeks he lived and grew in the womb of an unwed teenaged mother. He is at the heart of our preaching, and this book will show you how to confront the sin of abortion by proclaiming the God who became abortable in order to save sinners.

Book Expository Exultation

Download or read book Expository Exultation written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2018-04-16 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “God has appointed preaching in worship as one great means of accomplishing his ultimate goal in the world.” —John Piper John Piper makes a compelling claim in these pages about the purpose of preaching: it is intended not merely as an explanation of the text but also as a means of awakening worship by being worship in and of itself. Christian preaching is a God-appointed miracle aiming to awaken the supernatural seeing, savoring, and showing of the glory of Christ. Distilling over forty years of experience in preaching and teaching, Piper shows preachers how and what to communicate from God’s Word, so that God’s purpose on earth will advance through Biblesaturated, Christ-exalting, God-centered preaching—in other words, expository exultation.

It’s easy to let our own personalities dictate the emotional dimension of our sermons, but the best preachers mirror the Bible’s emotive intent in their sermons. In Passion in the Pulpit, Jerry Vines and Adam Dooley will teach you how to exegete not just the verbal content of Scripture, but its emotional appeal as well. They show you the role the Bible’s emotional intent should play in each stage of sermon prep, and: Offer exegetical steps to discern the biblical pathos Teach you how to avoid manipulation while making your sermons emotional Help you determine the appropriate limitations of emotional appeal Give you verbal, vocal, and visual techniques to help convey the biblical emotional intent in your sermons When we elevate the Bible’s emotional intent above our own, we preach truth rather than personality.

Book From the Study to the Pulpit

Download or read book From the Study to the Pulpit written by Allan Moseley and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many pastors struggle with preaching the Old Testament. As a professor and pastor, Allan Moseley's vast experience and knowledge go a long way in helping expositors enrich their pulpit ministry. The purpose of his book is to offer both exegetical and preaching help by means of a workable 8-step method. The author's preaching model starts with the initial step of determining the genre and meaning of the text to doing word studies and discovering the main ideas of the text to applying the sermon in a life-changing and Christ-honoring manner. Some books on preaching from the Old Testament are written by authors who do not actually preach, or preach only occasionally. Pastors and budding preachers need a book written by someone who has knows what it is like to be a pastor and has prepared sermons every week for years. His book reflects his classroom teaching on the subjects of exposition and hermeneutics, and it provides helpful illustrations of expositional principles that rise from his own preaching ministry.

Book Creative Preaching and Oral Writing

Download or read book Creative Preaching and Oral Writing written by Carl Hoefler and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 1978 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creative Preaching and Oral Writing begins with a definition of preaching, then goes into a discussion of the creative importance of attitude toward the preaching task, toward the content, toward self and toward the listeners. Skillfully comparing the structure of the sermon to the structure of the bumble bee, Richard Hoefler says, A good speech is like a bumble bee. It possesses five basic parts, each one playing a vital formation in the total process of the flight of the bumble bee: a head, a body, a stinger, legs, and wings. They enable both the bumble bee and the speech to get off the ground and into their work. After thorough discussion of the structure of the sermon, the author goes into detailed explanation of the use of the oral style of writing sermons. The illustrations and examples will enable student or the seasoned pastor to dramatically improve his or her preaching effectiveness. Richard Carl Hoefler, Professor of Preaching and Worship and Dean of Chapel in the Lutheran Seminary, Columbia, South Carolina, is a graduate of Wittenberg University and the Hamma School of Theology, Springfield, Ohio. He received a Master's degree from Princeton University and a Doctor of Divinity degree from Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. Previously Richard Carl Hoefler was pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church, Springfield, Ohio, as well as instructor in Wittenberg University and Sinclair College, Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Hoefler says that his greaest accomplishment comes when a student says to him "You opened up the meaning of the gospel for me. I had never heard it before."

Book Pulpit Peddlers or Godly Preachers

Download or read book Pulpit Peddlers or Godly Preachers written by Warren E. Anderson Sr. and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are sure that from the outset, the title of this book has raised eyebrows. It has been the topic of many heated conversations, and perhaps most of all, it has probably caused a lot of consternation among our fellow ministers of the Gospel. This book is not designed to bash any preacher. However, this book does have a twofold purpose.First, it is to expose and mitigate the negative impact, that those individuals who are peddlers of the Word of God, as identified by the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 2:17, are having on the church and especially on those in the church who are still babes in Christ and vulnerable to this brand of corrupt pulpit rhetoric. Further, this book is designed to also hopefully open the eyes of all believers, old and new, veterans or rookies, who are also listening and taking heed to the pulpit peddlers pimpish rhetoric and missing the true intent and nature of the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ!Second—and equally, if not more, importantly—this book sets the record straight and resolves the controversy surrounding the preaching of prosperity from the pulpit. This book engages both the topic and the reader from what is written in God's Word. We avoid popular opinions as well as our own wisdom. Instead, this book resolves the prosperity controversy based on what God has said about it in His inspired Word. By the time you get to the end of this book, you will be certain that it is God's will to bless you, based on His riches in glory. However, you will also be certain that God does so according to His individual will for each of us and that He is able to exceedingly and abundantly give above all we can think or ask.

Book In the Name of the Father

Download or read book In the Name of the Father written by Carl L. Kell and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Name of the Father: The Rhetoric of the New Southern Baptist Conventionbegins with an analysis of the 1979 Southern Baptist Convention, the watershed convention where moderate forces fell before the powerful oratory of the ultraconservative faction, which has remained in power ever since. Communication professors Carl L. Kell and L. Raymond Camp investigate the rhetorical shift from moderate to ultraconservative in the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest denomination in the South and the largest Protestant denomination in the United States. Drawing on sermons delivered at national conventions from 1979 to the present, Kell and Camp outline the discourses of fundamentalism, inerrancy, and exclusion. These discourses, the authors assert, point to the SBC leaders' call for a return to times before feminism and tolerance of varying sexual orientations allegedly brought chaos to society and shook believers from their theological foundations.

Book The Word Before the Powers

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charles L. Campbell
  • Publisher : Westminster John Knox Press
  • Release : 2002-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780664222338
  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book The Word Before the Powers written by Charles L. Campbell and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this examination of the ethical significance of preaching, Charles Campbell provides both fresh insights into the relationship between preaching and ethics and a challenging moral vision for the contemporary church. Moving beyond a narrow focus on moral decision-making or social-issues sermons, Campbell argues that a particular ethic--nonviolent resistance--is inherent in the practice of preaching and shapes the moral life of the church. In the face of the powers, the fundamental ethical task of preaching involves building up the church as a community of resistance. Employing three dimensions of character ethics--vision, practices, and virtues--Campbell demonstrates the concrete ways in which preachers may undertake this task.
