Book excerpt: When investigators Deirdre Cash and Merrill Hock Hocken are hired by the Posse, a group of adventurous women of lascivious intent, to help them locate one of their missing members, they did not anticipate much of a difficulty, certainly not the morass of personal relationships in which they would find themselves. Several disappearances and an unsolved murder along the way kept them busy and guessing. Is there an ending to the story, or is it like the weather, ever-changing and never quite settled?

  • Pages : 150 pages

Download or read book Word Posse written by Rashid Osmani and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The curious ironies of retirement. The unspoken pains of false love. The bad side of doing good. In his illuminating collection of short, yet deeply reflective poems, Rashid Osmani makes magnificent use of the Sufi tradition of verse to cast shimmering new light on modern-day emotions with poems of rich insight and powerful resonance that belie the brevity of their words. Word Posse: Sufi-Style Short Poems to Amuse & Entertain is the poet's snapshot of thoughts and feelings about issues most of us face in a modern, connected world. Thought-provoking and frequently light-hearted, this deeply personal, refreshingly original collection explores common life experiences, from romantic disillusionment to political perplexity. Many of the poems are anchored in Sufism, an eclectic interpretation of Islam with emphasis on humanity and tolerance. Osmani, an engineer by profession, was drawn to writing poetry after a near-death experience. His short poems are particularly suitable for today's world of abbreviated attention spans. In this collection, forty of his works are organized into six categories: Light-Hearted; Love - Real and Fake; Human Nature; Political; Heart and Soul; and Philosophical. In the first poem, "Word Posse," from which the collection draws its title, the speaker describes how words are organized similar to a posse, in order to track down elusive thoughts and imprison them in poems. The poem "4th Quarter" takes a more somber tone, as it was inspired by a nursing home visit. "Petrified Pet" is in a lighter vein, as the speaker views his own body as a pet. Explanatory notes are provided for each of the poems as well as enlightening comments posted by other poets. Written in a unique freestyle form, with little emphasis on rhyming, the poems encourage readers to think a little more deeply about the chosen subjects. Anyone searching for greater meaning in their lives will find much to ponder in these soul-stirring works.

Book excerpt: These are the confessions of the Bitch Posse. Cherry, Rennie, and Amy were outcasts, rebels, and dreamers. And their friendship was so all-encompassing that some would call it dangerous. This is the story of three women-as seniors in high school and as women in their mid-thirties---who formed a bond in order to survive the pitfalls and perils of their lives. In the present day, one of them is a wife and mother-to-be, trying to live a "normal" life. One of them is a writer who engages in a number of self-destructive relationships. And one of them is in a mental hospital---and has been ever since that one fateful night fifteen years ago, when a heart-wrenching betrayal and the unraveling of relationships led them to a point of no return, where their actions triggered unimaginable consequences. These secrets have torn them apart while inextricably binding them to one another. What happened to them? And can they survive their shared history, even today? The Bitch Posse is an anthem for friendships that defy society's approval or disapproval. It's a novel of secrets, courage, sacrifice, and hope against the odds. It is both a journey back to being a girl on the verge of adulthood, and a journey forward, showing how the events of our past can unearth the best in us today. Dare to jump in. "The Bitch Posse is a riveting and emotionally charged read. No fluff here." --Chicago Tribune

Book Latin Via Ovid

  • Author : Norma Goldman
  • Publisher : Wayne State University Press

  • Pages : 536 pages

Download or read book Latin Via Ovid written by Norma Goldman and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using an introduction to mythology by the master storyteller Ovid himself, the authors have prepared a unique teaching tool designed to achieve proficiency at Latin in one year at the college level, two years at the high school or intermediate level. The volume provides students with imaginative, connected reading, beginning with introductory prose versions of Ovid's simple myth tales and progressing to the rich poetry of Ovidian Latin (with appropriate teaching aids) within forty lessons. The grammatical approach is traditional, but the central emphasis is on reading. In each chapter the reading appears first, followed by the vocabulary, the grammar, exercises, and etymology relating to the vocabulary. The exercises begin with a group of questions in Latin (based on the reading), to be answered in Latin. Each tale is preceded by a brief discussion in English of the story and its mythological significance. The myths retold by Ovid and the attractive format are conceived to impel the student into acquiring the skill to read the author in the original language. For additional complimentary materials on this topic, please see Latin Via Ovid Audio materials (available via downloadable flash drive and cassette tapes) by Norma Goldman and Jacob E. Nyenhuis and the accompanying text Practice, Practice: A Latin Via Ovid Workbook by Norma Goldman and Michael Rossi.

Download or read book The Lawyer s Style Guide written by Peter Butt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 965 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clarity and precision in legal writing are essential skills in the practice and study of law. This book offers a straightforward, practical guide to effective legal style from a world-leading expert. The book is thoughtfully structured to explain the elements of good legal writing and its most effective use. It catalogues all aspects of legal style, topic by topic, phrase by phrase, usage by usage. It scrutinises them all, suggesting improvements. Its 'dictionary' arrangement makes it easy to navigate. Entries cover matters such as abbreviations, acronyms, active and passive voice, brackets, bullet points, citation methods, cross-referencing, fonts, document design, footnotes, gender-neutral language, numbering systems, plain legal language, punctuation, the use of Latin in law, structures for legal advices and documents, and techniques for editing and proofreading. Also covered are many words and phrases that non-lawyers find opaque and obscure-the aim being to show that lawyers can usually substitute a plain-English equivalent that captures the legal nuances of the 'legalese'. Other topics include ambiguity, deeds, definitions, provisos, recitals, simplified outlines, terms of art, tone, and the various principles of legal interpretation. With an emphasis on technical effectiveness and understanding, the book is required reading for all those engaged in the practice and study of law.
