Book excerpt: Adrian works through the alphabet, combining one-line definitions with more thoughtful pieces - a laugh-out-loud book on Christians and Christian culture. What are the two most important things in the universe? Bacon sandwiches and salvation, according to Adrian Plass. In this book, he combines one-line definitions with more thoughtful pieces, producing a volume that will make you laugh, cry - and reflect. Despite the fact that someone once offered him five million pounds never to write another word for publication (one hilarious story recounted here) this is a glorious book. Vintage Plass. 'Doubt: more or less frequent visitor who should be allowed in when he knocks at the door and sat firmly down in a corner. As long as he is neither fed nor entertained he will usually get bored after a while and go away.' 'Ineffable: (1) cannot be expressed in words (2) cannot be sworn at. 'Oblivion: nothing to worry about.' 'Go in peace: (1) injunction to the congregation at the end of communion (2) something that is only possible for those blessed with an en-suite bathroom and toilet.' 'Pillar of the church: big thick thing that holds everything up and restricts vision.' "Healing, life-affirming and full of hope." Rob Frost "Subversive but not destructive, cutting but never unkind, the man helps me to want to remain a Christian. Brilliant, fun, laugh-out-loud stuff." Download or read book Good Clean Fun written by Nick Offerman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After two New York Times bestsellers, Nick Offerman—woodworker, actor, comedian, and co-host of NBC’s crafting competition series Making It—returns with the subject for which he’s known best—his incredible real-life woodshop. Nestled among the glitz and glitter of Tinseltown is a testament to American elbow grease and an honest-to-god hard day’s work: Offerman Woodshop. Captained by hirsute woodworker, actor, comedian, and writer Nick Offerman, the shop produces not only fine handcrafted furniture, but also fun stuff—kazoos, baseball bats, ukuleles, mustache combs, even cedar-strip canoes. Now Nick and his ragtag crew of champions want to share their experience of working at the Woodshop, tell you all about their passion for the discipline of woodworking, and teach you how to make a handful of their most popular projects along the way. This book takes readers behind the scenes of the woodshop, both inspiring and teaching them to make their own projects and besotting them with the infectious spirit behind the shop and its complement of dusty wood-elves. In these pages you will find a variety of projects for every skill level, with personal, easy-to-follow instructions by the OWS woodworkers themselves; and, what’s more, this tutelage is augmented by mouth-watering color photos (Nick calls it "wood porn"). You will also find writings by Nick, offering recipes for both comestibles and mirth, humorous essays, odes to his own woodworking heroes, insights into the ethos of woodworking in modern America, and other assorted tomfoolery. Whether you’ve been working in your own shop for years, or if holding this stack of compressed wood pulp is as close as you’ve ever come to milling lumber, or even if you just love Nick Offerman’s brand of bucolic yet worldly wisdom, you’ll find Good Clean Fun full of useful, illuminating, and entertaining information.

Download or read book Yes Granddaughter YOU CAN written by Joyce M. Wrenn and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yes, Granddaughter, YOU CAN by Joyce M. Wrenn Joyce M. Wrenn’s Yes, Granddaughter, YOU CAN is the inspiring memoir of a woman whose career should be a source of encouragement for our youth, young women and young men alike. She succeeded in breaking through the “glass ceiling” before others even knew there was a crack. The definition of “glass ceiling” is: “The unseen, yet unbreachable barrier that keeps minorities and women from rising to the upper rungs of the corporate ladder, regardless of their qualifications or achievements.” This term first surfaced in the mid-1980s. With immigrant grandparents, Wrenn’s father stressed the importance of education. In college, she chose studies like math and physics over the “liberal arts” many girls studied. Even though she married young, she continued her education and graduated, accepting her first job as a computer programmer for Bendix in 1959. Over the years, Wrenn’s career progressed as she moved back and forth across the country, working for such companies as IBM, Bank of America, American Airlines, Union Pacific RR—each move a step up the ladder—retiring as CIO in 1999. Wrenn hopes her story will help young people, especially women, in their quest to climb the corporate ladder in their own careers.

Download or read book Understanding Leisure written by Les Haywood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989. Understanding Leisure is a readable introductory analysis of the key elements in the study of leisure. This includes leisure concepts and dimensions of leisure, its activity forms, participants, provision, and leisure futures, leisure and social theory. A collaborative work of six authors, Understanding Leisure is a textbook which introduces the reader to the interrelated dimensions of leisure in contemporary society and aims to provide them with guidelines for further study. Exercises and discussion topics are included at the end of each chapter to enable the reader to apply general theory to particular examples. The text contains seven chapters covering all aspects of the study of leisure. Starting with a critical evaluation of different concepts of leisure it progresses through an analysis of the relationship between leisure both to play and work and the diverse forms of leisure such as recreation, hobbies, crafts and education. There then follows a perspective on leisure participation, an analysis of the spatial dimensions of leisure and how relative land values can affect access to leisure. The historical context of leisure provision and the changing relationship between public and private sector is then examined which provides insights into the future of leisure, based on forecasts and theories of social change. The book ends with a discussion of how contemporary social theory contributes to an understanding of leisure. Understanding Leisure will be valuable reading for undergraduate degree courses in Leisure Studies. It will also be useful background reading for post graduate study in Leisure and Recreational Management and Tourism as well as for leisure professionals in both the commercial and public sectors.

After the war, he served as a wildlife ranger with Georgia Game and Fish Commission for thirty years. These are his stories.
