Book excerpt: The Yukon wolf is the largest race of Canis lupus in the world. There are 5,000 wolves in the territory. Wolves live in all Yukon mountain ranges hunting Dall's sheep and caribou in the high alpine. In the forested valleys they hunt moose, the ideal prey size for packs to handle. Regional wolf numbers depend on the number of moose in the area. Packs are territorial except in the far north where wolves migrate long distances to follow the Porcupine caribou herd year-round. --From book cover.

Book Stress Response of Boreal Woodland Caribou Moose and Wolves to Disturbance in Eastern Manitoba

Download or read book Stress Response of Boreal Woodland Caribou Moose and Wolves to Disturbance in Eastern Manitoba written by Michelle Ewacha and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disturbance can provoke a chronic (long-term) stress response in wildlife, and can contribute to population declines. I examined the stress response of boreal woodland caribou, moose, and wolves to disturbance in eastern Manitoba by measuring cortisol concentrations in hair. Caribou cortisol concentrations were greatest for the three most southern populations, and increased with decreasing home range size. Intermediate logging (6-21 years) provided the best explanation for individual variation in caribou cortisol concentrations. Disturbance did not affect moose cortisol concentrations, but cortisol concentrations were higher in moose killed by wolves than moose collected by humans, suggesting that chronic stress in moose is linked to poor body condition and increased vulnerability to wolf predation. Wolf cortisol concentrations increased in 2012 and 2013 compared to 2011 following increased harvest pressure, and were higher in females. However, neither winter severity nor variation in wolf diet affected wolf cortisol concentrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1984, a conference called Wildlife 2000: Modeling habitat relationships of terrestrial vertebrates, was held at Stanford Sierra Camp at Fallen Leaf Lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. The conference was well-received, and the published volume (Verner, J. , M. L. Morrison, and C. J. Ralph, editors. 1986. Wildlife 2000: modeling habitat relationships of terrestrial vertebrates, University of Wisconsin Press, Madison, Wisconsin, USA) proved to be a landmark publication that received a book award by The Wildlife Society. Wildlife 2001: populations was a followup conference with emphasis on the other major biological field of wildlife conservation and management, populations. It was held on July 29-31, 1991, at the Oakland Airport Hilton Hotel in Oakland, California, in accordance with our intent that this conference have a much stronger international representation than did Wildlife 2000. The goal of the conference was to bring together an international group of specialists to address the state of the art in wildlife population dynamics, and set the agenda for future research and management on the threshold of the 21st century. The mix of specialists included workers in theoretical, as well as practical, aspects of wildlife conservation and management. Three general sessions covered methods, modelling, and conservation of threatened species.

Book Interactions of Wolves Mountain Caribou and an Increased Moose hunting Quota Primary prey Management as an Approach to Caribou Recovery

Download or read book Interactions of Wolves Mountain Caribou and an Increased Moose hunting Quota Primary prey Management as an Approach to Caribou Recovery written by Robin W. Steenweg and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountain caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) are endangered across their range. The leading cause of their decline is increased apparent competition with other ungulates, mainly moose (Alces alces), because of increase in densities of predators such as wolves (Canis lupus). I tested some assumptions of, and evidence for, moose management as an approach to caribou recovery through the indirect reduction in wolf numbers. Increased hunting quotas drastically reduced moose densities in the Parsnip River Study Area of northern British Columbia, and I monitored 31 collared wolves during this decline. Despite wolf selection for vegetation types associated with moose and avoidance of areas selected by caribou, wolves occasionally forayed during snow-free months to elevations where caribou were more common. Wolf diets were comprised of >80% moose, with little caribou and other prey items. Annual dispersal rates of wolves increased compared to rates before moose reduction, and compared to a control study area. In systems where moose comprise the majority of wolf diets and caribou are at low densities, reductions in moose numbers may help to facilitate caribou recovery. --P. ii.
