Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 2 August 1708 Captain Woodes Rogers set sail from Bristol with two ships, the Duke and Duchess, on an epic voyage of circumnavigation that was to make him famous. His mission was to attack, plunder and pillage Spanish ships wherever he could. And, as Graham Thomas shows in this tense and exciting narrative, after a series of pursuits and sea battles he returned laden with booty and with a reputation as one of the most audacious and shrewd fighting captains of the age. He was then appointed governor of the Bahamas by George I with the task of suppressing the pirates who roamed this corner of the Caribbean and preyed on its shipping. He was equally successful as a privateer and pirate-hunter in an age when brutality and ruthlessness were the law of the sea.

Book Pirate Hunter of the Caribbean

Download or read book Pirate Hunter of the Caribbean written by David Cordingly and published by Random House Trade Paperbacks. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From renowned pirate historian David Cordingly, author of Under the Black Flag and film consultant for the original Pirates of the Caribbean, comes the thrilling story of Captain Woodes Rogers, the avenging nemesis of the worst cutthroats ever to terrorize the high seas. Once a marauding privateer himself, Woodes Rogers went from laying siege to laying down the law. During Britain’s war with Spain, Rogers sailed for the crown in sorties against Spanish targets in the Pacific; battled scurvy, hurricanes, and mutinies; captured a treasure galleon; and even rescued the castaway who inspired Robinson Crusoe. Appointed governor of the Bahamas in 1717, the fearless Rogers defended the island colony of King George I against plundering pirates and an attempted Spanish invasion. His resolute example led to the downfall of such notorious pirates as Blackbeard, Calico Jack, and the female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read. A vividly detailed and action-packed portrait of one of the early eighteenth century’s most colorful characters, Pirate Hunter of the Caribbean serves up history that’s as fascinating and gripping as any seafaring legend.

Book Life Aboard a British Privateer

Download or read book Life Aboard a British Privateer written by Robert C. Leslie and published by . This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woodes Rogers-the man who rescued 'Robinson Crusoe' In the history of the British at sea, the names of many of its greatest men have long been familiar to almost everyone. For many, however, the name Woodes Rogers may not be foremost among them. Yet in the time of Queen Anne this master mariner, sailing from Bristol, circumnavigated the globe in a momentous two and a half year odyssey with his two ships-Duke and Duchess. He was an English privateer of some repute and was successful against the Spanish, taking several prizes in the Pacific on his epic voyage. It was he who rescued the 'real' marooned hero of Daniel Defoe's adventure Robinson Crusoe-Alexander Selkirk-from Juan Fernandez Island and promptly made him captain of one of his own prize ships the Increase. This astonishing man went on to be the first Royal Governor of the Bahamas, held the post twice, beat off Spanish attempts to gain influence in the region and substantially cleared the Caribbean seas of pirates. This fascinating book combines the research of historian Robert Leslie with Woodes Rogers own journals to make a vital account of an extraordinary mariner from the great age of sail. Through its pages the reader may trace Rogers' career and voyages of the early eighteenth century which inevitably are full of incident and interest. Available in softcover and hardcover with dust jacket.

Book Africans to Spanish America

Download or read book Africans to Spanish America written by Sherwin K. Bryant and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-02-15 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africans to Spanish America expands the Diaspora framework that has shaped much of the recent scholarship on Africans in the Americas to include Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, and Cuba, exploring the connections and disjunctures between colonial Latin America and the African Diaspora in the Spanish empires. While a majority of the research on the colonial Diaspora focuses on the Caribbean and Brazil, analysis of the regions of Mexico and the Andes opens up new questions of community formation that incorporated Spanish legal strategies in secular and ecclesiastical institutions as well as articulations of multiple African identities. Editors Sherwin K. Bryant, Rachel Sarah O'Toole, and Ben Vinson III arrange the volume around three themes: identity construction in the Americas; the struggle by enslaved and free people to present themselves as civilized, Christian, and resistant to slavery; and issues of cultural exclusion and inclusion. Across these broad themes, contributors offer probing and detailed studies of the place and roles of people of African descent in the complex realities of colonial Spanish America. Contributors are Joan C. Bristol, Nancy E. van Deusen, Leo J. Garofalo, Herbert S. Klein, Charles Beatty-Medina, Karen Y. Morrison, Rachel Sarah O'Toole, Frank "Trey" Proctor III, and Michele Reid-Vazquez.

Book Pirates and Privateers in the 18th Century

Download or read book Pirates and Privateers in the 18th Century written by Mike Rendell and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pirates and Privateers tells the fascinating story of the buccaneers who were the scourge of merchants in the 18th Century. It examines their lifestyle, looking at how the sinking of the Spanish treasure fleet in a storm off the coast of Florida led to a pirates gold rush; how the Kings Pardon was a desperate gamble which paid off and considers the role of individual island governors, such as Woodes Rogers in the Bahamas, in bringing piracy under control. The book also looks at how piracy has been a popular topic in print, plays, songs and now films, making thieves and murderers into swash-buckling heroes. It also considers the whole question of buried treasure and gives a lively account of many of the pirates who dominated the so-called Golden Age of Piracy.

Book Woodes Rogers Life Aboard a British Privateer Tomes Maritime

Download or read book Woodes Rogers Life Aboard a British Privateer Tomes Maritime written by Woodes Rogers and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-10-29 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WOODES ROGERS commanded the most successful privateering expedition of the early eighteenth century. With his men and ships he sacked the rich town of Guiaquil and took one of the fabulously wealthy Manila Galleons: Nostra Seniora del Incarnation Desengano. During one of the many vicious confrontations with the Spanish, Rogers took a bullet in face, causing the top half of his jaw to fall to the deck, but this didn't hinder him from remaining in command and writing out his further orders on paper. He used many unique strategies to maintain order over his small fleet (the Duke, the Dutchess, the Marquiss, and the Batchelor) manned by wretched, disorderly sailors. This version of his journal was edited by Robert C. Leslie, giving the book a fast pace and adventurous flavor. INCLUDES: 50+ pages of maps and classic privateering images. Book excerpt: The Legend of Anne Bonny was recorded by Captain Charles Johnson in a book published in 1724 entitled A General History of the Robberies & Murders of the Most Notorious Pyrates. Anne was a colonial aristocrat and the embellished daughter of the revered Chancellor of South Carolina. She rebelled at the age of sixteen when she eloped with James Bonny and was taken to the island of Providence to live among the pirates in 1716. Anne was a woman way before her time who had the courage to search for true love and discover the ultimate meaning of freedom. As she sailed the open seas as a pirate, Anne faced challenges and quests that no other woman of her era had ever endured. Her exploits branded her as an Ill-tempered harlot as she sailed under the command of her captain John Rackam and was pursued by the inescapable armed forces of the English Royal Colony Jamaica. Despite the public shame of her deeds, her father’s unending love prevailed during her times of trials and tribulations. We follow their adventures with intrigue and hope for Anne and her fellow pirates, as well as for her true love’s safety. Only several plot points are known about the life of Anne Bonny and over the years the connection between each has been filled in with speculation labeling her as an uncouth woman, while ignoring other parts of her legend that reveal a more noble character. The Profligate was written in order to resurrect her vibrant spirit and tell her story where all the plot points are included to reveal a more realistic portrait as to who Anne Bonny may truly have been.
