Book excerpt: Since the sixth edition of this classic text/reference was published in 1981, there have been so many developments in the field that the new seventh edition represents an almost total rewrite of the subject matter. The opportunity has been taken to rearrange the structure and broaden the scope to cover areas of conversion, machining and the application of paints and finishes; the format has also been enlarged to improve readability. Part 1 contains chapters that deal with the structure of wood at the gross, cellular and molecular levels; variability is also covered. Part 2 has five chapters on the properties of wood, with special coverage of elastic behaviour, toughness and the use of structural-sized timber for strength tests. Part 3 on processing has material on several new areas not covered in earlier editions of the book; for example, log conversion, seasoning, and the machining of wood and board. The discussion of grading and grade stresses is fully updated. Part 4 on utilisation examines the latest techniques and standards for the manufacture of wood products. Part 5 examines all aspects of timber in service, including protection and preservation. The book will appeal to a wide readership, both as a student text and reference. Students of wood science and forestry at undergraduate and equivalent level will find it of special value. All institutions with courses in the built environment will wish to make the book available as a reference source.

Book Wood Properties and Processing

Download or read book Wood Properties and Processing written by Miha Humar and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-05-23 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood-based materials are CO2-neutral, renewable, and considered to be environmentally friendly. The huge variety of wood species and wood-based composites allows a wide scope of creative and esthetic alternatives to materials with higher environmental impacts during production, use and disposal. Quality of wood is influenced by the genetic and environmental factors. One of the emerging uses of wood are building and construction applications. Modern building and construction practices would not be possible without use of wood or wood-based composites. The use of composites enables using wood of lower quality for the production of materials with engineered properties for specific target applications. Even more, the utilization of such reinforcing particles as carbon nanotubes and nanocellulose enables development of a new generation of composites with even better properties. The positive aspect of decomposability of waste wood can turn into the opposite when wood or wood-based materials are exposed to weathering, moisture oscillations, different discolorations, and degrading organisms. Protective measures are therefore unavoidable for many outdoor applications. Resistance of wood against different aging factors is always a combined effect of toxic or inhibiting ingredients on the one hand, and of structural, anatomical, or chemical ways of excluding moisture on the other.

Book excerpt: Pergamon Series of Monographs on Furniture and Timber, Volume 8: Timber: Its Mechanical Properties and Factors Affecting its Structural Use focuses on the mechanical and technical properties of timber, including how a tree grows and develops. This book discusses the growth of the tree, structure of wood, fundamental properties, factors affecting strength, structural grading, and seasoning. The strength properties, assessing strength properties, and testing for strength are also covered. The strength of wood varies almost with every species and factors affecting this in relation to working stresses are fully indicated in this text. This publication is intended as an introductory textbook on the mechanical and technical properties of wood, and as such, will be useful to students, architects, builders, and others requiring knowledge on the subject.

Book Materials Selection for Sustainability in the Built Environment

Finally, the book reviews previous publications on construction material selection and presents essential discussions on the role professionals, researchers, contractors and governments play in making more sustainable decisions on the built environment. Presents a lifecycle management-based, systematic and integrated approach for sustainable construction materials selection Discusses the impact of materials selection, covering every aspect of sustainability (environmental, social and economic aspects) Looks at the concept of the circular economy Provides case studies on decision-making methods in combination with lifecycle sustainability assessments

Book Springer Handbook of Wood Science and Technology

Download or read book Springer Handbook of Wood Science and Technology written by Peter Niemz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-01 with total page 2064 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides an overview on wood science and technology of unparalleled comprehensiveness and international validity. It describes the fundamental wood biology, chemistry and physics, as well as structure-property relations of wood and wood-based materials. The different aspects and steps of wood processing are presented in detail from both a fundamental technological perspective and their realisation in industrial contexts. The discussed industrial processes extend beyond sawmilling and the manufacturing of adhesively bonded wood products to the processing of the various wood-based materials, including pulp and paper, natural fibre materials and aspects of bio-refinery. Core concepts of wood applications, quality and life cycle assessment of this important natural resource are presented. The book concludes with a useful compilation of fundamental material parameters and data as well as a glossary of terms in accordance with the most important industry standards. Written and edited by a truly international team of experts from academia, research institutes and industry, thoroughly reviewed by external colleagues, this handbook is well-attuned to educational demands, as well as providing a summary of state-of-the-art research trends and industrial requirements. It is an invaluable resource for all professionals in research and development, and engineers in practise in the field of wood science and technology.

Book Timber

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 92 pages

Download or read book Timber written by Filibert Roth and published by . This book was released on 1895 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I have the honor to transmit herewith for publication a brief but comprehensive discussion of the characteristics and properties of wood in general and of our American timbers in particular, which it is hoped may be useful to engineers, architects, carpenters, lumbermen, and all wood workers. The paper was prepared by Mr. Filibert Roth, in charge of the investigations in timber physics. Although much of the information contained in this bulletin exists in the experience of practical woodworkers and in books in other languages, it has never before been published in English is systematic and accessible form and with special application to American timbers. Such a publication can not, of course, exhaust any part of this great subject. It is desired that it may be followed by a more elaborate treatise when additional knowledge has been gained through the investigations now in progress. The information it contains is largely based on actual experiment and scientific observation, and will, it is hoped, not only explain the experiences of the practical worker with his material, but will remove erroneous notions, and thus aid in improving the practice and lead to a more rational use of our forest resources."--Letter of Transmittal, Page [i].
