This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wood Preservation in the United States The decay of wood is not an inorganic process, like the rusting of iron or the crumbling of stone, but is due to the activities of low forms of plant life called bacteria and fungi. Bacteria are among the simplest of all forms of life, often consisting of but a single cell, microscopic in size. Sometimes several such cells may be attached to each other, and so form a thread or filament. Usually they are colorless, and multiply by the division of the parent cell into other cells which, in turn, divide again. Book Handbook on Wood Preservation

Download or read book Handbook on Wood Preservation written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook on Wood Preservation: Wood Prevention Is Wood Perpetuation Wood properly preserved is practically permanent wood, and because efficient avoids the cost of unnecessary replacements. The treatment of timber to make it last the limit of its serviceability is a fundamental feature of modern engineering. Briefly, in the following pages, the American Wood-Preservers' Association presents facts and figures for those becoming interested in the subject. Further information will be cheerfully given by any of its members or officers (see pages 47-55). Reference to the literature listed on pages 56-73 also is recommended. The most comprehensive publications on the subject are the Proceedings of the American Wood-Preservers' Association and Howard F. Weiss' "Preservation of Structural Timber." For the guidance of treating-plant operators, construction engineers, and others interested in the technique of wood preservation, the American Wood-Preservers' Association will soon issue the beginnings of a Manual of Recommended Practice. By up-to-date methods and in conformity with the best practice wood can be so preserved that its life is prolonged to at least three times what it would be without treatment. Consumers of wood can figure the savings for their own particular service, after getting quotations from their nearest wood-preserving plant. Large users of treated wood estimate savings as follows: Ties, 2 to 10 cents per tie per year; piles, 20 to 100 cents per pile per year; poles, 5 to 15 cents per pole, per year; posts, 1 to 3 cents per post per year; mine timbers, 2 to 3 dollars per gangway set per year. Book The Ferrum Timber Company for the United States of America

Download or read book The Ferrum Timber Company for the United States of America written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ferrum Timber Company for the United States of America: Organized for the Preservation of Timber From Decay and From the Ravages of the Marine Worm Hamar asserts that not only will his process preserve timber from decay for fifteen to twenty five years, or for an indefinite period, but will increase the strength and hardness of the timber to such a degree as will actually obliterate the difference of durability between the hard and the soft woods. As proof of this he refers to the sleepers of the Austrian and Hungarian railways, of soft wood prepared by his process more than ten years ago, which have answered every requirement and withstood every test as well as, Oak or any other kind of hard wood might have done. For the preservation of wood from rottenness it is first of all necessary to change its component parts by expelling those that are detrimental and substituting preservatives in their stead. Woody fibre itself will resist putrefaction for a considerable length of time, but the sap is the substance which sooner or later generates rottenness. Hamar's process first expels the sap completely, and next replaces it by the Chemical Compound for preservation. The expulsion of the sap, and the introduction of the chemicals, is produced by a simple and inexpensive appliance of hydrostatic and atmospheric pressure, which acts almost instantaneously throughout the pores of the whole timber subjected to the process. The chemicals vary according to circumstances and the different kinds of timber to be preserved. For a more complete understanding of the mode of preparing timber by this and other processes, some knowledge of the composition and manner of growth of wood, becomes important. Download or read book The Preservation of the Exterior of Wooden Buildings Classic Reprint written by Allerton S. Cushman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preservation of the Exterior of Wooden Buildings Lumber and its Relation to Paints: The proper choice and treatment of lum ber is one of the most important prob lems which the builder as well as the painter has to face. When about to build a dwelling, barn, or other structure made principally of wood, the question is sure to arise in regard to what variety to se lect so as to get the maximum service and money value. The locality in which the structure is to be built must often have a bearing upon this question. While it is true that the painting of each type of wood demands the special considera tion of the painter, it is also true that _the study of paints for wood protection points toward the production of a paint that will give satisfactory results under all conditions and on all grades. It is the writers' opinion that a paint may be made that will be perfectly well suited for the preservation of every species of wood, provided the paint is properly treated in the hands of the skillful and intelligent painter, who can produce last ing results on almost every type, by varying the proportion of thinners and oil in the various coats. The painter who uses the same paint on soft pine.and again on hard pine, without making a special study of how to reduce the priming coat for the hard pi'ne, will be likely to get inferior results on the latter. In case of failure, the natural impulse is often to place the blame upon the paint, whereas the real responsibility may rest upon the painter's lack of knowledge. Signs of Paint Failure: Those who are responsible for the care and mainte nance of property are familiar with the condition of surface presented by almost all wooden buildings or structures which have been improperly painted with inie rior paints. Chalking or fiouring are terms used to describe the condition of a paint surface which has deterio rated within the paint film. The forma tion of minute fissures, generally spoken of as checking, as well as the effects best described as cracking, scaling, peel ing, and blistering, are other signs of failure which cause paint coatings to present an unsightly appearance, and which point inevitably either to the use of improperly made paints or to im proper application. The cause of these conditions is not difficult to understand when even a brief study of the character of the materials entering into the com position of a paint has been made. It.
