Book excerpt: No auto show is complete without them. They're crowd pulling and invariably extravagant, zany, way-out, and created with no apparent consideration for cost. And, in the eyes of some, taste. But for all the entertainment value of the visually striking concept car, it does, nevertheless, have a serious role to play. For the car manufacturer it provides an invaluable opportunity to gauge the public's reaction to radical design initiatives before putting them into production. With environmental considerations moving increasingly to the fore, the newest generation of aerodynamically honed concepts is also of particular significance for featuring creative alternatives to the long-running internal combustion engine. This usually takes the form of emissions-free electric power which is either used in isolation or in hybrid form, when it works in harmony with miserly fueled gas or diesel units. The concept car is now well over 50 years old, and author Jonathan Wood charts its evolution from General Motors' landmark Y-Job of 1939, through the dream cars of the 1950s, and so to the present day. This highly illustrated book will fascinate car enthusiasts of all ages and provide a pointer to the sort of vehicles that will be on our roads well into the 21st century and beyond.

Book Voiture Minimum

    Book Details:
  • Author : Antonio Amado
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2011-02-11
  • ISBN : 0262015366
  • Pages : 363 pages

Download or read book Voiture Minimum written by Antonio Amado and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011-02-11 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A colorful account of Le Corbusier's love affair with the automobile, his vision of the ideal vehicle, and his tireless promotion of a design that industry never embraced. Le Corbusier, who famously called a house “a machine for living,” was fascinated—even obsessed—by another kind of machine, the automobile. His writings were strewn with references to autos: “If houses were built industrially, mass-produced like chassis, an aesthetic would be formed with surprising precision,” he wrote in Toward an Architecture (1923). In his “white phase” of the twenties and thirties, he insisted that his buildings photographed with a modern automobile in the foreground. Le Corbusier moved beyond the theoretical in 1936, entering (with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret) an automobile design competition, submitting plans for “a minimalist vehicle for maximum functionality,” the Voiture Minimum. Despite Le Corbusier's energetic promotion of his design to several important automakers, the Voiture Minimum was never mass-produced. This book is the first to tell the full and true story of Le Corbusier's adventure in automobile design. Architect Antonio Amado describes the project in detail, linking it to Le Corbusier's architectural work, to Modernist utopian urban visions, and to the automobile design projects of other architects including Walter Gropius and Frank Lloyd Wright. He provides abundant images, including many pages of Le Corbusier's sketches and plans for the Voiture Minimum, and reprints Le Corbusier's letters seeking a manufacturer. Le Corbusier's design is often said to have been the inspiration for Volkswagen's enduringly popular Beetle; the architect himself implied as much, claiming that his design for the 1936 competition originated in 1928, before the Beetle. Amado Lorenzo, after extensive examination of archival and source materials, disproves this; the influence may have gone the other way. Although many critics considered the Voiture Minimum a footnote in Le Corbusier's career, Le Corbusier did not. This book, lavishly illustrated and exhaustively documented, restores Le Corbusier's automobile to the main text.

Book Classic Woodies

Download or read book Classic Woodies written by Bill Yenne and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic Woodies: A National Treasure caters to a rapidly-growing woodie revival that is putting more of these great machines -- called the collector's car of the 1990s -- on the street and in the public eye. These rolling works of art, with their magnificent styling and lush wood detailing, have their roots in the classic coach-making tradition that extends back to the eighteenth century. Wood-framed and wood-paneled automobiles have been around as long as cars have, but the classic era of the American woodie was in the 1930s and 1940s. Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors all produced variations on the theme, and woodies became an integral part of the American lifestyle, first as a comfortable family car and then as the car of choice for surfers and beach-goers. The illustrations in this book include many archival photographs not seen in half a century, as well as contemporary color images of stock and restored woodies, with special emphasis on close-ups and details. These are complemented by authoritative, descriptive text.

Book Otto Wood the Bandit

Download or read book Otto Wood the Bandit written by Trevor McKenzie and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legions of bluegrass fans know the name Otto Wood (1893–1930) from a ballad made popular by Doc Watson, telling the story of Wood's crimes and violent death. However, few know the history of this Appalachian figure beyond the larger-than-life version heard in song. Trevor McKenzie reconstructs Wood's life, tracing how a Wilkes County juvenile delinquent became a celebrated folk hero. Throughout his short life, Wood was jailed for numerous offenses, stole countless automobiles, lost his left hand, and made eleven escapes from five state penitentiaries, including four from the North Carolina State Prison after a 1923 murder conviction. An early master of controlling his own narrative in the media, Wood appealed to the North Carolina public as a misunderstood, clever antihero. In 1930, after a final jailbreak, police killed Wood in a shootout. The ballad bearing his name first appeared less than a year later. Using reports of Wood's exploits from contemporary newspapers, his self-published autobiography, prison records, and other primary sources, Trevor McKenzie uses this colorful story to offer a new way to understand North Carolina—and arguably the South as a whole—during this era of American history.
