Book A Wonderful Work of God

Download or read book A Wonderful Work of God written by Robert W. Brockway and published by Lehigh University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Wonderful Work of God: Puritanism and the Great Awakening is a survey of the American phase of the Evangelical Revival which swept Britain and her American colonies during the first half of the eighteenth century. Preceded by local revivals, such as the one stirred by Jonathan Edwards in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1734, the Great Awakening exploded into a mass movement because of the itinerant preaching of a young Anglican priest, George Whitefield, and a number of Congregational and Presbyterian ministers who joined him in the evangelical work. However, because of the bizarre behavior of some of the radical evangelicals, such as James Davenport, the movement soon became highly controversial and split colonial ministers and congregations into "Friends of Revival" and "Opposers." As the revival excitement abated, schisms beset congregations in New England and eastern Long Island, resulting in the appearance of separate churches, and the Philadelphia Presbyterian synod was fractured as well." "Drawing on both original sources and a review of the relevant literature, the author places the Great Awakening in the context of the Puritanism of the times, both in Europe and the colonies, and discusses its roots in German Pietism and the Methodist revivals in England. The significant figures of the Awakening and their interactions are brought to life, particularly James Davenport, the Awakening's most bizarre exponent and the preacher who, more than any other, was responsible for bringing it into disrepute."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book My Life in Stories and Photos

Download or read book My Life in Stories and Photos written by Richard L. White and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-05-10 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard White has always enjoyed writing family history and stories. His four previous books include a family history, two books of travelogues, and letters to his ancestors. In My Life in Stories and Photos, his autobiography, Richard connects the stories of his youth and adulthood with over 130 photos from 1950 to 2023. He writes, “This book is a far cry from the detailed draft of my autobiography, which I wrote in the 2000’s. It was hiding for years in a thick three-ring binder in the basement, and it only went as far as New Year’s Eve 2000. I wondered, ‘How should I tell my story?’ I opted for a substantially pruned-down narrative complemented by photos capturing special moments in my life through the years. So many details have been left out. But I hope what I have included here will be an interesting and at times compelling story.”

Book Popular Culture and Its Relationship to Conflict in the UK and Australia since the Great War

Download or read book Popular Culture and Its Relationship to Conflict in the UK and Australia since the Great War written by Andrekos Varnava and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-26 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how cultural production derived from, or in anticipation of, conflict can be used to create specific social identities, national histories, and contemporary concepts of memory in Britain and Australia. Studies on the politics of cultural production have usually focussed on one conflict, or on one particular cultural medium, at a time. This volume, however, presents a broader horizon to draw attention to more popular forms of cultural production from the Great War up to and including its Centenary. The chapters in this volume interrogate the contentious philosophical notion that culture thrives in times of war, and expires in peace, and asks whether ‘art’, as a form of social barometer, can anticipate conflict rather than merely respond to it. This is a fascinating read for students, researchers, and academics interested in British and Australian History and its relationship with Popular Culture. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Contemporary British History.

Book The Politics of Sport

Download or read book The Politics of Sport written by Paul Gilchrist and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport is an essential part of community structure, membership and identity. Whether on the field of play, in stadia, or on the streets, sport has consistently brought together disparate individuals to share culture, values and memories. Nowadays these relationships are being rewritten through the effects of global socio-economic practices, the interventions of government, the impact of cultural imperialism and, at the local level, through the actions of individuals and new constituencies that are emerging in response. Furthermore, this generates discourse on matters of regional and national identity. This themed issue presents a range of essays that examine the relationship between sport and society through the conceptual lenses of community, mobility and identity. Drawing upon insights from contemporary history and current political phenomena from leading academic specialists in the field, the issue addresses cross-cutting themes such as loyalty and allegiance, migration and integration, identity and collective memory, and the politics of resistance and change, which will be of interest to the political scientist, the contemporary historian and sport scholar alike. This book was previously published as a special edition of the journal Sport in Society.
