Book excerpt: A castle in the Himalayas. Five guests. One dead body. The idyllic Peter Dann Castle is a picture of tranquility as summer blooms in the Himalayan foothills. The heritage hotel has a reputation of being blessed – whatever happens here is said to happen for the good. Harith Athreya is invited here by his friend Javed, a retired police psychologist, to solve what appears to be an ominous riddle. Five friends have checked into the hotel, pretending to be mutual strangers. All other guests who were to check in have inexplicably cancel their bookings at the last moment, leaving the five as the only guests at the hotel. Suspicious, Athreya and Javed investigate and find that all the other bookings were spurious. What devious plot are the five guests hatching? But all five seem to be typical millennials in their late twenties: an angel investor (Sarosh), an interior designer (Ipshita), a popular singer (Dhavak), a religious girl (Linda) and a freelancer (Purbhi). Would such a group really be plotting something nefarious? Meanwhile, marks of a bloodied hand appear overnight. A woman staying in a nearby homestay (Mrinal) is seen secretly burning papers. And to top it all, Javed’s daughter (Asma) is attacked by a knife-wielding man. When one of them plummets to their death off the rooftop terrace, Athreya and Javed investigate. Evidence and lies quickly pile up, and it becomes apparent that all the five guests had known Mrinal despite their claims to the contrary. Will Athreya be able to unmask the killer before the hotel claims another victim?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alone with their authoritarian father on a vast estate where time has stopped, two siblings speak a language and inhabit a surreal universe of their own making, shaped by their reading of philosophy and tales of chivalry. When their father dies and the children set out to bury him, they encounter the inhabitants of the neighboring village, and the pair's cloak of romance and superstition falls away to reveal the appalling truth of their existence. A brilliant, masterful story in which nothing is as it first seems, "The Little Girl Who Was Too Fond of Matches" is a triumph of suspense, linguistic invention, and playfulness that peers into the heart of guilt, cruelty, and violence. Download or read book Headless Males Make Great Lovers written by Marty Crump and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-11-15 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The natural world is filled with diverse—not to mention quirky and odd—animal behaviors. Consider the male praying mantis that continues to mate after being beheaded; the spiders, insects, and birds that offer gifts of food in return for sex; the male hip-pocket frog that carries his own tadpoles; the baby spiders that dine on their mother; the beetle that craves excrement; or the starfish that sheds an arm or two to escape a predator's grasp. Headless Males Make Great Lovers and Other Unusual Natural Histories celebrates the extraordinary world of animals with essays on curious creatures and their amazing behaviors. In five thematic chapters, Marty Crump—a tropical field biologist well known for her work with the reproductive behavior of amphibians—examines the bizarre conduct of animals as they mate, parent, feed, defend themselves, and communicate. Crump's enthusiasm for the unusual behaviors she describes-from sex change and free love in sponges to aphrodisiac concoctions in bats-is visible on every page, thanks to her skilled storytelling, which makes even sea slugs, dung beetles, ticks, and tapeworms fascinating and appealing. Steeped in biology, Headless Males Make Great Lovers points out that diverse and unrelated animals often share seemingly bizarre behaviors—evidence, Crump argues, that these natural histories, though outwardly weird, are successful ways of living. Illustrated throughout, and filled with vignettes of personal and scientific interest, Headless Males Make Great Lovers will enchant the general reader with its tales of blood-squirting horned lizards and intestine-ejecting sea cucumbers—all in the service of a greater appreciation of the diversity of the natural histories of animals.

Book excerpt: Mama of ten Abbie Halberstadt helps women humbly and gracefully rise to the high calling of motherhood without settling for mediocrity or losing their minds in the process. Motherhood is a challenge. Unfortunately, our worldly culture offers moms little in the way of real help. There has a be a better way, a biblical way, for mamas to grow and thrive. As a daughter of Christ, you have been called to be more than an average mama. Attaining excellence doesn’t have to be unsettling but it will take committed focus and a desire to parent well according to God’s grace and for His glory. M is for Mama offers advice, encouragement, and scripturally sound strategies seasoned with a little bit of humor to help you embrace the challenge of biblical motherhood and raise your children with love and wisdom. Mama, you are worthy of the awesome responsibility God has given you. Now it’s time to start believing you can live up to it.

Gary Alexander approaches that capital letter." - Hollis George, editor and anthologist "Read it straight through. Couldn't put it down." - Hayes Brandwell, The Polemicist Post Like father, like son. Whoever coined that one had never heard of Joe and Stanley Buckley. Joe is a ne'er-do-well fugitive who tends bar in Belize. All he knows of the son he hasn't seen in years is that "he likes computers," the understatement of the year. Susan, Joe's ex and Stanley's mother pleads with him to come up to an Oregon beach to attend his son's upcoming wedding. Joe barely makes it in time for the nuptials and stays on through Father's Day a week later, raising havoc throughout. Download or read book Where the Crawdads Sing written by Delia Owens and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE—The #1 New York Times bestselling worldwide sensation with more than 18 million copies sold, hailed by The New York Times Book Review as “a painfully beautiful first novel that is at once a murder mystery, a coming-of-age narrative and a celebration of nature.” For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life—until the unthinkable happens. Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Download or read book Rebel written by Faith Morgan and published by Hodder & Stoughton. This book was released on 2021-06-17 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A rare, highly detailed insider account of a "family" designed to be shut off from the world. And of Morgan, a ferocious young girl who railed hard against it.' Sunday Times 'This is an unflinching and courageous memoir, exposing one of the world's most infamous cults. It's an inspiring, if at times upsetting, read.' Daily Express My name is Faith Morgan and I was born into the infamous Children of God cult, or 'The Family' as it came to be known. At age 19 I managed to escape and entered a world in which I had to learn how to live again. Rebel is my story. My teenage diary helps piece the story of my travels in Costa Rica, India, Greece, Mexico, and London together. Of the communes, the 'missions', the friendships and the relationships. And of course, my enduring faith: in Jesus, in the Prophet (cult leader David Berg), and in the inevitability of the coming end times, which I fully believed would arrive. But beyond the brainwashing and mistreatment is the extraordinary story of my family and the adventures of my early life which help me understand what happened and why, so it doesn't happen to others. The spirit of that defiant girl who escaped is still in there somewhere, and through telling my story I wish to look into the eyes of 'evil', with its many faces so I can send it on its way.
