Book Glimpse of Women in sport

Download or read book Glimpse of Women in sport written by Capt. Dr. (Mrs.) Satpal Kaur and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-11-21 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical analysis of women's participation in sports has not received the proper attention which it deserves from most of the Indian scholars. Men have played their dominant role in society as well as in sports which smacks of masculine superiority whereas women have been sidelined to lay a minor role. They were considered delicate, submissive and emotional. For these "clinging vine" creatures to compete in sports was unthinkable because they occupy a secondary status in Indian society. Moreover, society does not attach value to bring women into the sports field. The evidence of what the status of women was in the earliest history is found in the sacred Hindu texts, the Vedas namely Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Atharva Veda and Saam Veda. Each one of these texts is quite voluminous, the Rig Veda being the largest and the oldest. It is important to note that the hymns contained in these texts were composed by various eminent sages and during different time periods.

Book Women Escaping Violence

Download or read book Women Escaping Violence written by Elaine J. Lawless and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The statistics are alarming. Some say that once every nine minutes a woman in the United States is beaten by her spouse or partner. Others claim that once every four minutes a woman in the world is beaten by her spouse or partner. More women go to emergency rooms in the United States for injuries sustained at the hands of their spouses and partners than for all other injuries combined. Shelters for battered women are filled beyond capacity every single day of the year. Despite the overwhelming evidence that violence in our homes is a daily reality, most of us are not willing to acknowledge this private violence or talk about it openly. Women Escaping Violence brings women's stories to the attention of the academy as well as the reading public. While we may be unwilling or unable to talk about the issue of battered women, many of us are ready to read what women have to say about their endangered lives. Considerable scholarship is emerging in the area of domestic violence, including many self-help books about how to identify and escape abuse. Women Escaping Violence offers the unique view of battered women's stories told in their own words, as well as a feminist analysis of how these women use the power of narrative to transform their sense of self and regain a place within the larger society. Lawless shares with the reader the heart-wrenching experiences of battered women who have escaped violence by fleeing to shelters with little more than a few items hastily shoved into a plastic bag, and often with small children in tow. The book includes women's stories as they are told and retold within the shelter, in the presence of other battered women and of caregivers. It analyzes the uses made of these narratives by those seeking to counsel battered women as well as by the women themselves.

Book World report on the health of refugees and migrants

Download or read book World report on the health of refugees and migrants written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2022-07-20 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide, more people are on the move now than ever before, yet many refugees and migrants face poorer health outcomes than the host populations. Addressing their health needs is, therefore, a global health priority and integral to the principle of the right to health for all. The key is to strengthen and maintain health systems by ensuring that they are refugee- and migrant-sensitive and inclusive. Health outcomes are influenced by a whole host of determinants. However, refugees and migrants face additional determinants such as precarious legal status; discrimination; social, cultural, linguistic, administrative and financial barriers; lack of information about health entitlements; low health literacy; and fear of detention and deportation. This groundbreaking publication outlines current and future opportunities and challenges and provides several strategies to improve the health and well-being of refugees and migrants. It is an advocacy tool for national and international policy-makers involved in health and migration. Evidence on the health of refugees and migrants remains fragmented – comparable data across countries and over time are urgently needed to track progress towards the health-related United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. With only 8 years until the 2030 target date to transform our world, the time to act is now.
