From the day Molly Pitcher fired her cannon without congressional sanction at the Battle of Monmouth in 1778 until 1948, when women were accorded full legal status in the regular armed services, the military was viewed as a wholly masculine preserve. During the Revolution and Civil War, women were forced to disguise themselves as men order to gain access to the ranks. The fight against the "built-in institutional resistance of the tradition-bound military subculture" is a large part of General Holm's story. Women's battle for status and recognition is the other part. Women always had to be superior to male counterparts in education and moral standing. Uniforms and accommodations were major stumbling blocks. The "emphasis was most often on bathrooms, not bullets", General Holm observes. Although women are now an integral part of each of the services, the controversy is far from over; the revolution continues. But, as recent events have so aptly demonstrated, it is now impossible for America to go to war without its women.

Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Kate Germano arrived at Parris Island convinced that if she expected more of the female recruits just coming into Corps, she could raise historically low standards for female performance and make women better Marines. One year after she took command of the Fourth Recruit Training Battalion, shooting qualifications of the women under her command equaled those of men, injuries had decreased, and unit morale had noticeably improved. Then the Marines fired her. This is the story of Germano's struggle to achieve equality of performance and opportunity for female Marines against an entrenched male-dominated status quo. Germano charges that the men above her in the chain of command were too invested in perpetuating the subordinate role of women in the Corps to allow her to prove that the female Marine can be equal to her male counterpart. She notes that the Marine Corps continues to be the only service where men and women train separately in boot camp or basic training. Meanwhile, in the U.S. Army, women have already become Army Rangers and applied to be infantry officers. Germano addresses the Marine Corps' $35-million gender-integration study, which shows that all-male squads perform at a higher level than mixed male-female squads. This study flies in the face of the results she demonstrated with the all-female Fourth Battalion and raises questions about the Marine Corps' willingness to let women succeed. At a time when women are fighting sexism in many sectors of society, Germano's story has wide-ranging implications and lessons not just for the military but for corporate America, the labor force, education, and government.

His study provides a social chronicle of a little-studied facet of U.S. military and women's history. The basic purpose of the book is to pay tribute to the women of the World War II generation who were courageous enough to join the newly created military auxiliaries. Book excerpt: While Rosie the Riveter had fewer paid employment options after being told to cede her job to returning World War II veterans, her sisters and daughters found new work opportunities in national defense. The 1948 Women's Armed Services Integration Act created permanent military positions for women with the promise of equal pay. Her Cold War follows the experiences of women in the military from the passage of the Act to the early 1980s. In the late 1940s, defense officials structured women's military roles on the basis of perceived gender differences. Classified as noncombatants, servicewomen filled roles that they might hold in civilian life, such as secretarial or medical support positions. Defense officials also prohibited pregnant women and mothers from remaining in the military and encouraged many women to leave upon marriage. Before civilian feminists took up similar issues in the 1970s, many servicewomen called for a broader definition of equality free of gender-based service restrictions. Tanya L. Roth shows us that the battles these servicewomen fought for equality paved the way for women in combat, a prerequisite for promotion to many leadership positions, and opened opportunities for other servicepeople, including those with disabilities, LGBT and gender nonconforming people, noncitizens, and more.
