Book The State and Women in the Economy

Download or read book The State and Women in the Economy written by Jean Larson Pyle and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1990-10-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the effect of state policies on women's roles in the economy. At the most concrete level it investigates the relative lack of response of women's labor force activity rates to export-led development in the Republic of Ireland. At a broader level, it provides critical insights into current labor market debates regarding the causes of women's subordination and the efficacy of state policies designed to alleviate them. The book shows how the state, in addition to and interactively with the workplace and household, can maintain gender inequality. In so doing, Pyle demonstrates the usefulness of a revitalized and broader structural approach to feminist analysis.

Book Women and Japanese Management

Download or read book Women and Japanese Management written by Alice C L Lam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standard works on the employment systems of Japanese companies deal almost exclusively with men. Women, however, constitute the vast majority of the low wage, highly flexible "non-core" employees. This book breaks new ground in examining the role of Japanese women in industry. It assesses the extent to which growing pressure for equal opportunities between the sexes has caused Japanese companies to adapt their employment and personnel management practices in recent years. The author puts the argument in an historical perspective, covering the employment of Japanese women from the start of Japan's industrialisation up to the turning point of the 1986 Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Law. She examines the background and execution of the legislation and she looks at the response of the business community. In her case study of the Seibu department store, which takes up the final part of the book, Lam concludes that the EEO Law has not had the desired effect.

Book Gender Politics in Global Governance

Download or read book Gender Politics in Global Governance written by Mary K. Meyer and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 1999-01-14 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the grassroots to the global, women's movements worldwide are taking on new arenas, new goals and strategies, and in some cases a whole new vocabulary. International organizations, nonstate actors, regimes and norms, and a host of globalizing forces offer women and their representatives new opportunities and obstacles. This volume draws together a wide range of exciting new research that looks at the gendered nature of the institutions, practices, and discourses of global governance. The contributors describe the spaces women have carved out in international organizations, the strategies women's movements have employed to influence international politics, and the ways in which movement activism has contested gendered rules in global governance. Out of a stimulating diversity of approaches, the common goal of empowering women resounds.

Book Development Has a Woman s Face

Download or read book Development Has a Woman s Face written by Krishna Ahooja-Patel and published by APH Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The richness of Krishna Ahoojapatel's analysis of the connections between women and the economy comes from the diversity of her engagements as a UN policymaker, an academic and an activist. Her analysis is therefore multidimensional. It is not a historical work, but captures four decades of changes in policies, in paradigms and in women's lives. It is rare to see such different strands come together in one person and one book." -Vandana Shiva, Founder/Director, Research Foundation of Science, Technology & Ecology, New Dehli.
