Book Women in the Indian Economy

Download or read book Women in the Indian Economy written by V. S. Ganesamurthy and published by New Century Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In India's political, economic, and social spheres, the Constitution confers equal rights and opportunities to men and women. Efforts are being made to ensure gender equality within the policy framework of the National Policy for the Empowerment of Women (2001). India's commitment to gender equality is further evidenced by the fact that it is a signatory to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, which was ratified in 1993. The most significant achievement of recent years has been to reserve one-third of the seats for women in panchayats (village councils) and local bodies through the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments. This has brought about a million women into positions of decision-making and has contributed significantly to the political empowerment of women. India's Human Development Reports have emerged as a powerful tool for the advocacy of gender justice since their inception in 1995. This book contains eight essays, authored by eminent scholars, on different facets of women's involvement in the Indian economy. It also includes details from India's Eleventh Five Year Plan concerning welfare, development, and empowerment of women in India.

Book Women and Labour in Late Colonial India

Download or read book Women and Labour in Late Colonial India written by Samita Sen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-05-06 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samita Sen's history of labouring women in Calcutta in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries considers how social constructions of gender shaped their lives. Dr Sen demonstrates how - in contrast to the experience of their male counterparts - the long-term trends in the Indian economy devalued women's labour, establishing patterns of urban migration and changing gender equations within the family. She relates these trends to the spread of dowry, enforced widowhood and child marriage. The book provides insight into the lives of poor urban women who were often perceived as prostitutes or social pariahs. Even trade unions refused to address their problems and they remained on the margins of organized political protest. The study will make a signficant contribution to the understanding of the social and economic history of colonial India and to notions of gender construction.

Book Working the Night Shift

Download or read book Working the Night Shift written by Reena Patel and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-25 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relatively high wages and the opportunity to be part of an upscale, globalized work environment draw many in India to the call center industry. At the same time, night shift employment presents women, in particular, with new challenges alongside the opportunities. This book explores how beliefs about what constitutes "women's work" are evolving in response to globalization. Working the Night Shift is the first in-depth study of the transnational call center industry that is written from the point of view of women workers. It uncovers how call center employment affects their lives, mainly as it relates to the anxiety that Indian families and Indian society have towards women going out at night, earning a good salary, and being exposed to western culture. This timely account illustrates the ironic and, at times, unsettling experiences of women who enter the spaces and places made accessible through call center work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labour in India: A Study of the Conditions of Indian Women in Modern Industry India is passing through a time of strain, and it is inevitable that attention should centre on the more obvious causes Of unrest. While this is so, changes that will have great influence on her future are going on almost unnoticed. Mining areas are being enlarged and new mills are being built. The congestion of thousands Of workers in limited areas is increasing. Many who are alive to the urgency of agricultural and village problems have not realized that in certain localities the industrial development is one side, and not an unimportant side, Of the village problem as that exists to-day. Since the meetings of the Washington Labour Conference in 1919, Indian Labour has been definitely linked up with Inter national Labour. Not only within the boundaries of Hindustan, but throughout the world, its influence will be felt. Through the gates of modern industry, pioneer groups of outcastes, finding their way to emancipation, take their first steps on the path to self-respect and independence, and their eventual influence on the future of India will be coloured by their experiences on the journey. Download or read book Women and Trade written by World Bank;World Trade Organization and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2020-09-04 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade can dramatically improve women’s lives, creating new jobs, enhancing consumer choices, and increasing women’s bargaining power in society. It can also lead to job losses and a concentration of work in low-skilled employment. Given the complexity and specificity of the relationship between trade and gender, it is essential to assess the potential impact of trade policy on both women and men and to develop appropriate, evidence-based policies to ensure that trade helps to enhance opportunities for all. Research on gender equality and trade has been constrained by limited data and a lack of understanding of the connections among the economic roles that women play as workers, consumers, and decision makers. Building on new analyses and new sex-disaggregated data, Women and Trade: The Role of Trade in Promoting Gender Equality aims to advance the understanding of the relationship between trade and gender equality and to identify a series of opportunities through which trade can improve the lives of women.
