Book excerpt: WHO Pakistan commissioned a rapid assessment with the primary objective of assessing the capacity of the health sector in Pakistan to integrate the issues of gender-based violence. This rapid assessment was conducted under the WHO Gender and Health Programme as part of the One UN Gender Equality Interventions. A qualitative study involving a brief desk review and primary data collection, including interviews and focus group discussions with health service providers, was employed. The study reconfirms that the connection between gender and health is not only poorly understood but also that gender-based violence is not internalized as a public hearth issue by the majority of health service providers at different levels. The outcomes of this assessment will be of interest not only to policy-makers in the context of Pakistan but also to those in other countries developed and developing alike.

For example, women are more likely than men to be sexually assaulted or killed by someone they know. The United Nations has defined violence against women as "gender-based" violence, to acknowledge that such violence is rooted in gender inequality and is often tolerated and condoned by laws, institutions, and community norms. Violence against women is not only a profound violation of human rights, but also a costly impediment to a country's national development. While gender-based violence occurs in many forms throughout the life cycle, this review focuses on two of the most common types-physical intimate partner violence and sexual violence by any perpetrator. Unfortunately, the knowledge base about effective initiatives to prevent and respond to gender-based violence is relatively limited. Few approaches have been rigorously evaluated, even in high-income countries. And such evaluations involve numerous methodological challenges. Nonetheless, the authors review what is known about more and less effective-or at least promising-approaches to prevent and respond to gender-based violence. They present definitions, recent statistics, health consequences, costs, and risk factors of gender-based violence. The authors analyze good practice initiatives in the justice, health, and education sectors, as well as multisectoral approaches. For each of these sectors, they examine initiatives that have addressed laws and policies, institutional reforms, community mobilization, and individual behavior change strategies. Finally, the authors identify priorities for future research and action, including funding research on the health and socioeconomic costs of violence against women, encouraging science-based program evaluations, disseminating evaluation results across countries, promoting investment in effective prevention and treatment initiatives, and encouraging public-private partnerships.

Book excerpt: This article empirically investigates whether women's access to economic resources acts as a risk factor or protective factor for spousal (emotional and physical) violence against them, particularly in the case of Pakistan. Using data from Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey (PDHS) 2012 to 2013, we employed logistic regression to investigate this relationship between women's access to economic resources and spousal violence against them by using two indicators: (a) whether she earns money in cash and/or in-kind and (b) whether she owns property. The results indicate that women who earn in cash and/or in-kind face greater violence. Education can reduce the violence against women and family history of violence contributes positively for greater violence. Result also confirms existence of regional disparity in this regard. Based on findings of this study we provide policy suggestions to mitigate the issue of spousal violence against women.

The main purpose of this study is to explain the phenomenon of violence, at what extent the violence is present in our society. This study reveals that not only domestic females face the cruel violence but also working and educated class of females faces this uncivilized behavior. The promulgation of state backed discriminatory legislation from 1978 on wards and a systematic media advocacy that focused on the women's reproductive role and protect them from the un-due male biasness in society, led to an increase in the incidence of violence against working women and encouraged the erosion of their rights. In our male dominant society, various circle s of torturing women by men are continuing. The law makers, civil administration, voluntary organizations are still unsuccessful in inspiring the society to end this evil custom as there is big gaps between the practice and the actual perceived practice. The social discourse in patriarchal societies like Pakistan continues to uphold not only the false division of social discrimination but also a hurdle in the gender mainstreaming.

Book excerpt: Multiple perspectives explain causative factors of violence against women that are popularly identified as: i) radical feminism-challenging male dominance rooted in patriarchal structures of society; ii) socialist feminism-situating women s vulnerability to male violence in their economic dependence on men; and iii) post-modern feminism-attributing violence against women to multiple causative factors. This study stands on the confluence of these multiple perspectives. Unlike single dimension approaches of radical and socialist feminism, it focused on multidimensional causation of violence against women. Presumably, perpetration of physical violence against women is necessarily a relational phenomenon and its prevalence may vary with varying types of interpersonal relations of men with women. Mainly, it focused on finding out answers to the questions: i) how do men define their relations with women; ii) how does a complex interplay of multiple factors characterize their relations with women; and iii) how do the different relations of men with women predict differential propensity of perpetrating physical violence against women in Pakistani households, both rural and urban.
