Book Commercializing Women

Download or read book Commercializing Women written by Katherine Toland Frith and published by Hampton Press (NJ). This book was released on 2008 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Commercializing Women is a collection of original essays intended to stimulate discussion about the depictions of women in Asian media. The authors explain how the underlying philosophical and cultural contexts that shape the life experiences of women in Asia are reflected in the media portrayals, especially in advertising. They discuss the influence of Confucianism in China, Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore; the traditional Hindu beliefs that have shaped life for women in India; and finally the role of Islam in constructing social norms for women in Islamic countries like Pakistan. Together these traditional influences along with the new and emerging global cultural values inherent in the media, weave a set of conditions that create the context for images of women in Asian media. Through a sampling of countries in Asia, the authors are able to explore and compare the underlying issues that affect the commercial representation of women in the region." "By drawing on a range of methodologies this book provides scholars with an understanding of the representation of women in advertising from the point of view of message producers who view Asian women as a growing market for clothing and beauty products, as well as from the point of view of many Asian women who see these commercial messages as tools for either subjugation or empowerment."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Media Consumption and Everyday Life in Asia

Download or read book Media Consumption and Everyday Life in Asia written by Youna Kim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores people’s everyday experience of the media in Asian countries in confrontation with huge social change and transition and the need to understand this phenomenon as it intersects with the media. It argues for the centrality of the media to Asian transformations in the era of globalization. The profusion of the media today, with new imaginations, new choices and contradictions, generates a critical condition for reflexivity engaging everyday people to have a resource for the learning of self, culture and society in a new light. Media culture is creating new connections, new desires and threats, and the identities of people are being reworked at individual, national, regional and global levels. Within historically specific social conditions and contexts of the everyday, the chapters seek to provide a diversity of experiences and understandings of the place of the media in different Asian locations. This book considers the emerging consequences of media consumption in people’s everyday life at a time when the political, socio-economic and cultural forces by which the media operate are rapidly globalizing in Asia.

Book Gender Media and Modernity in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book Gender Media and Modernity in the Asia Pacific written by Catherine Driscoll and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection offers a range of cultural studies perspectives on the ways gender and modernity intersect in media produced in the Asia-Pacific region. It spans different ideas about modernity in the region, different approaches to cultural analysis, and different media forms: from Taiwanese lifestyle television to avant-garde Indian cinema, from the emergence of a Chinese youth culture in online social networks to the alienation of country girls as imagined by Australian soap opera, and from the fantastic politics of migrating bodies in Korean cinema to the masculine mimicry of fighting women in South-East Asian action movies. Together, these essays explore the ways that media both records and helps produce images and experiences of modernity and the integral role gender plays in those processes. This book was originally published as a special issue of Cultural Studies.

Book Women and the Politics of Representation in Southeast Asia

Download or read book Women and the Politics of Representation in Southeast Asia written by Adeline Koh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singapore and Malaysia are rapidly modernising, globalising Asian states which, although being distinct nations since 1965, share common elements in the on-going struggle over the meaning of gender and sexuality in their societies. This is the first book to discuss a range of discourses around gender in these two countries. Women and the Politics of Representation in Southeast Asia: Engendering Discourse in Singapore and Malaysia seeks to give an overview of how gender and representation come together in various configurations in the history and contemporary culture of both nations. It examines the discursive construction of gender, sexuality and representation in a variety of areas, including the politics of everyday life, education, popular culture, literature, film, theatre and photography. Chapters examine a range of tropes such as the Orientalist "Sarong Party Girl," the iconic "Singapore Girl" of Singapore Airlines, and the figure of pious Muslim femininity celebrated by Malaysian NGO IMAN, all of which play important roles in delineating limitations for gender roles. The collection also draws attention to resistance to these gender boundaries in theatre, film, blogs and social media, and pedagogy. Bringing together research from a variety of humanistic and social science fields, such as film, material culture, semiotics, literature and pedagogy, the book is a comprehensive feminist survey that will be of use for students and scholars of Women’s Studies and Asian Studies, as well as on courses on gender, media and popular culture in Asia.

Book Representation of Women in East Asian Media

Download or read book Representation of Women in East Asian Media written by Rhoda Kariuki and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2023 in the subject Communications - Miscellaneous, grade: A, , course: Media and Communications, language: English, abstract: The representation of East Asian women in the media has described the stereotypes and gender inequality of women in Asia. The analysis of “Slaying the Dragon” film by Deborah Dee portrays an array of stereotypes. Deborah Gee's movie "Slaying the Dragon" demonstrates the potent idea of being secretive and scary in the movie. Males in Western media frequently depict Asian women as objects of sex. In addition, Asian women are subjected to sexual harassment, as in the case of Tracy Tzu, who was physically harassed and sexually abused. Moreover, Dee describes the gender inequality in women by citing that the representation of men in the media has significantly changed. In contrast, that of women has remained the same due to the confinement of popular culture in East Asia. The research, therefore, explores the role of East Asian women in the media and the constraints of achieving their goals in the media industry

For a quarter century, Goldenseal magazine has given its readers intimate access to the lives and music of folk artists from across this pivotal state. Now the best of Goldenseal is gathered for the first time in this richly illustrated volume. Some of the country's finest folklorists take us through the backwoods and into the homes of such artists as fiddlers Clark Kessinger and U.S. Senator Robert Byrd, recording stars Lynn Davis and Molly O'Day, dulcimer master Russell Fluharty, National Heritage Fellowship recipient Melvin Wine, bluesman Nat Reese, and banjoist Sylvia O'Brien. The most complete survey to date of the vibrant strands of this music and its colorful practitioners, Mountains of Music delineates a unique culture where music and music making are part of an ancient and treasured heritage. The sly humor, strong faith, clear regional identity, and musical convictions of these performers draw the reader into families and communities bound by music from one generation to another. For devotees as well as newcomers to this infectiously joyous and heartfelt music, Mountains of Music captures the strength of tradition and the spontaneous power of living artistry.
