The author has explained the core causes for their cloistered roles, and their marginalisation, and has put forth some key factors that could empower them with an identity of their own and supply them with a viable escape route out of a state of entrapment. The basic reasons for subjugation of women in India are lack of education, denial of exposure to activities outside the homes, and an unreasonable rationalisation that such education or exposure will not improve their lot anyway. This has led to a self-fulfilling prophesy type of consequence, and left the women unchanged. This work is meant to be used as a reference book by serious researchers in women's studies, which has been included as an interdisciplinary subject in most of the Indian universities. The traditional Indian woman has evolved to prove herself equal in many professions as well as proved better suited than men in others. The situation for the changing role of women is improving fast. On the other hand, female foeticide, dowry deaths, and domestic abuse provide a macabre background of primitive barbarism. In the typical Indian Society, you find that there are still expectations and assumptions about women that are not so much relevant to their current status, but a clear hangover from our suppressive past. This may be more obvious with traditional women or women in rural societies, but it is extremely prevalent in urban ones as well. This book contains the articles related to women issues. It addresses critical aspects of life of women in India like violence, female foeticide, challenges against working women, psychological barriers in empowerment of women, live-in-relationship, health issues etc. Articles related to the status of Tribal and Muslim women, Role of judiciary and role of women in independence movement are one of important matters which we should discuss. It finds that progress in ensuring the equal status of women and men has been made in many areas, including school enrolment, health, and economic participation. At the same time, it makes clear that much more needs to prevent the many forms of violence to which women are subjected. These changes have created their own pulls and pressures and the one segment of Indian society that has, perhaps, been most affected is women. While the rest of the world is changing, they are nearly always required to conform to age-old and traditional images and stereotypes. This absorbing collection of twenty-one articles, some previously published and others especially commissioned, examines and challenges the various roles ascribed to women in the context of a rapidly changing society. There are two concerns that bind the essays together--first, that the reality of women's subordination can best be understood by traditional and mythical portrayals of women; and, second, that this understanding must be balanced by a sensitivity to the "immediate" context (for example, the present-day violence against a woman's person and personhood). The contributors to this volume belong to a wide variety of backgrounds ranging from activists to academics. Between them, they provide perspectives from the grassroots and also the disciplines of anthropology, psychology and sociology.
