Book Woman s Day Dough Crafts

Download or read book Woman s Day Dough Crafts written by Lorraine Bodger and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lorraine uses five substantially different kinds of dough to work her 60 various designs. The familiar flour/salt dough is coaxed into a wide array of decorative pieces: bowls and baskets, candleholders, centerpieces and wall plaques - including a Pennsylvania Dutch-style plaque with tulips and hearts in bright primary colors. A bread/glue dough, which requires no baking and dries to a fine finish, is fashioned into a series of wonderful miniatures like the doll-sized vegetables adorning a kitchen memo board. Lorraine uses a sugar paste concoction in ways no one has dreamed of before. Her set of fragile, lacy ornaments is exactly suited to the delicate sugar paste dough, as is a lovely vase in frosty tints of pink, blue, lavendar and green. A standard cookie-dough recipe and cookie-cutter shapes lend themselves to some fabulous decorated holiday cookies, while a spicy gingerbread dough becomes a dream of a gingerbread house, its roof studded with hearts and windows outlined with candy canes.

Book Women and Work in Pre industrial England

Download or read book Women and Work in Pre industrial England written by Lindsey Charles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys women and work in English society before its transition to industrial capitalism in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The time span of the book from 1300 to 1800 allows comparison of women’s work patterns across various phases of economic and social organisation. It was originally published in 1985. Several important themes are highlighted throughout the individual contributions in the book. The most significant is the association between home and work. Not only was trade and manufacture in the pre-industrial period carried out in close proximity to domestic life, many household activities also overlapped with commercial ones. The second key theme is the importance of the local social and economic environment in shaping the nature and extent of women’s work. The book also demonstrates the similarity between certain aspects of women’s work before and after industrialisation. The industrial revolution may have made sexual divisions of labour more apparent but their origins lie firmly in the pre-industrial period.

Book Choosing Craft

  • Author : Vicki Halper
  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press
  • Release : 2009-05-15
  • ISBN : 080788992X
  • Pages : 334 pages

Download or read book Choosing Craft written by Vicki Halper and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choosing Craft explores the history and practice of American craft through the words of influential artists whose lives, work, and ideas have shaped the field. Editors Vicki Halper and Diane Douglas construct an anecdotal narrative that examines the post-World War II development of modern craft, which came of age alongside modernist painting and sculpture and was greatly influenced by them as well as by traditional and industrial practices. The anthology is organized according to four activities that ground a professional life in craft--inspiration, training, economics, and philosophy. Halper and Douglas mined a wide variety of sources for their material, including artists' published writings, letters, journal entries, exhibition statements, lecture notes, and oral histories. The detailed record they amassed reveals craft's dynamic relationships with painting, sculpture, design, industry, folk and ethnic traditions, hobby craft, and political and social movements. Collectively, these reflections form a social history of craft. Choosing Craft ultimately offers artists' writings and recollections as vital and vivid data that deserve widespread study as a primary resource for those interested in the American art form.

Book Craft and Conscience

Download or read book Craft and Conscience written by Kavita Das and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major book for writers to more effectively engage with complex socio-political issues—a critical first step in creating social change Writers are witnesses and scribes to society’s conscience but writing about social issues in the twenty-first century requires a new, sharper toolkit. Craft and Conscience helps writers weave together their narrative craft, analytical and research skills, and their conscience to create prose which makes us feel the individual and collective impact of crucial issues of our time. Kavita Das guides writers to take on nuanced perspectives and embrace intentionality through a social justice lens. She challenges writers to unpack their motivations for writing about an issue and to understand that “writing, irrespective of genre or outlet, is an act of political writing,” regardless of intention. The book includes essays from a fascinating mix of authors, including James Baldwin, Alexander Chee, Kaitlyn Greenidge, George Orwell, Roxane Dunbar-Ortiz, Gaiutra Bahadur, Jaquira Díaz, and Imani Perry. By including Das’s own perspective and those of the featured writers about motivations and approaches to writing about fraught social issues, this book both demystifies the process of engaging social issues on the page, and underscores the intentionality and sensitivity that must go into the work.

Book A Woman s Place Is in the Brewhouse

Download or read book A Woman s Place Is in the Brewhouse written by Tara Nurin and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • North American Guild of Beer Writers Best Book 2022 Dismiss the stereotype of the bearded brewer. It's women, not men, who've brewed beer throughout most of human history. Their role as family and village brewer lasted for hundreds of thousands of years—through the earliest days of Mesopotamian civilization, the reign of Cleopatra, the witch trials of early modern Europe, and the settling of colonial America. A Woman's Place Is in the Brewhouse celebrates the contributions and influence of female brewers and explores the forces that have erased them from the brewing world. It's a history that's simultaneously inspiring and demeaning. Wherever and whenever the cottage brewing industry has grown profitable, politics, religion, and capitalism have grown greedy. On a macro scale, men have repeatedly seized control and forced women out of the business. Other times, women have simply lost the minimal independence, respect, and economic power brewing brought them. But there are more breweries now than at any time in American history and today women serve as founder, CEO, or head brewer at more than one thousand of them. As women continue to work hard for equal treatment and recognition in the industry, author Tara Nurin shows readers that women have been—and are once again becoming—relevant in the brewing world.
