Book excerpt: “Petite bleu to pilote-a young American’s flight into war The author of this book, Dana Winslow, was a young American in Paris as France recruited men to fight the invading German forces of the Kaiser at the outbreak of the First World War. Feeling strongly for the plight and cause of the French, he immediately went to Les Invalides and there enlisted in the French Flying Corps as a trainee pilot. This vital first hand account is an essential source work of the period which reveals the training of the earliest French military aviators of the great conflict on the Western Front and it follows Winslow on his ‘rite of passage’ from inexperienced civilian, to lowly and little regarded aeronautical student (petit bleu) through his first perilous days in the combat zone to his time as an experienced and much prized pilote in the hostile skies over the trenches of the front lines. As may be expected, Winslow takes us to his war of dogfights, mid-air collisions, artillery spotting and reconnaissance in vivid-if humbly recounted-detail. Winslow’s book is especially valuable as an insight into the variety of aircraft employed by the French during his time with them and he provides useful details as to their construction, abilities, applications and flying characteristics such-as those of the peculiar ‘cut down’ Bleriot that was ‘the Penguin.’ He also gives an interesting view of the business of military flying in wartime, which he distinguishes as entirely separate from piloting, as he describes it, as a mere ‘conductor.’ Accounts of battling in the air during the Great War are not common, so this volume is, of course, a welcome addition to their limited number and will be of interest to everyone interested in the subject.”—Leonaur Print Version. Book Like A Thunderbolt The Lafayette Escadrille And The Advent Of American Pursuit In World War I Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Like A Thunderbolt The Lafayette Escadrille And The Advent Of American Pursuit In World War I Illustrated Edition written by Roger G. Miller and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes 29 Illustrations The advent of an American squadron, or “escadrille,” within the French air force, the Service Aeronautique, had been far from a simple process. French leaders initially held the belief, common at the time, that the war begun in 1914 would be a short one. The potential value of American volunteers fighting for France both for propaganda purposes and for helping bring the power of the New World into the war on the side of the Allies was thus irrelevant at first. By early 1915, however, the French began to accept American volunteers and assign them to escadrilles. In early 1916, the Service Aeronautique united several of these men in an elite chasse unit, which quickly earned an enviable reputation for audacity, bravery, and élan. Success of this unit, the Lafayette Escadrille, had three consequences. First, its existence encouraged a large number of Americans, far more than needed in one escadrille, to volunteer for French aviation. These individuals, identified unofficially as members of a “Lafayette Flying Corps,” served in numerous French air units. Second, the publicity surrounding the Lafayette Escadrille contributed favorable press for the Allied cause, strengthened ties between France and the U.S., and ultimately helped prepare the U.S. to participate on the Allied side of the conflict. Third, the existence of a large body of experienced American pilots provided combat veterans for the Air Service of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in France when the U.S. ultimately entered the war. These veterans helped instill in the U.S. Air Service the attitudes and practices of the Service Aeronautique, an infusion especially reflected in two U.S. pursuit squadrons, the 103rd Aero Squadron, made up of Lafayette Escadrille pilots, and the 94th Aero Squadron, the most famous American combat squadron of the war.

This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The adventures of a renowned American fighter pilot-in his own words After initially enlisting as an ambulance driver during the Great War, American born Wellman transferred into the French Foreign Legion. By the end of 1917 he had earned his wings as a fighter pilot and had joined N. 87 escadrille of the Lafayette Flying Corps. The ‘Black Cats’ flew Nieuport ‘pursuit’ aircraft-first 17s and latterly 24s. Wellman named his own plane Celia-after his mother. In his career as a fighter pilot Wellman chalked up three confirmed ‘kills’ and five ‘probables’ before eventually being shot down by German anti-aircraft fire in March 1918. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre with two palms. Due to his crash injury he was invalided out of French service and returned to the United States where he began a highly regarded career as a film director. This book, published in 1918, recounts Wellman’s wartime experiences while they were still fresh in the mind, as such it is an invaluable first-hand account of the aerial war over the Western Front from the first days of air combat. Recommended.”—Leonaur Print Version Author — Wellman, William Augustus, 1896-1975 Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in Boston, The Page company, 1918 Original Page Count – 284 pages Illustration — 16 illustrations.

Book FLYING FURY Five Years In The Royal Flying Corps Illustrated Edition

Download or read book FLYING FURY Five Years In The Royal Flying Corps Illustrated Edition written by James Thomas Byford McCudden VC DSO & Ba, MC & Bar MM and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrated Edition – contains 30 photos The highest scoring British Air Ace reveals his daily life at the front, in the air and in combat with the Germans above the Western Front. In the muddy trenches of the Western front few rankers would have considered that they would achieve field rank of major and international celebrity. In the skies above the shell-torn landscape, any man with enough talent, daring and skill could hope to become a ‘Flying Ace’ by claiming five or more victories over enemy aviators. Such an adventurous warrior was James McCudden; born in 1895 in Kent, he enlisted in the Royal Engineers in 1910 as soon as he could. But he was smitten with the service in the air after a flight in his brothers plane in 1913 and transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. However he was only an engineer in 1914, but once in France despite his modest rank he was allowed to go up with his squadron and act as an observer in a two seater plane. After much good service as an observer his superiors put him forward for pilot training in 1916. McCudden’s tally of the enemy over the next two years would rank him among the greatest of the World War One Aces; he claimed some 57 enemy aircraft even three in a single day in 1918. His exploits in the air were legendary, surviving an attack by the Red Baron himself, he pioneered new tactics that enabled him the edge of his enemy by using his engineering skill to fine tune his aircraft. He was awarded the Victoria Cross, DSO with Bar, MC with Bar and a Military Medal and the French Croix de Guerre for his daring, bravery and skill. It is with a sad irony that it was not his German foe that eventually ended his outstanding military service but a flying accident in 1918. He was only 23 at the time. His own exploits, adventures, tactics and escapes are best left to him in his own words, but suffice to say despite his modest retelling of his life in a day-by-day fashion remains both dramatic and engaging.

CHAPTER X BOMBING AND PHOTOGRAPHY "The following bombing will be carried out by No.--Squadron at night (10 P.m., 12 midnight, and 2 A.m.). At each of these times three machines will bomb respectively P, 0, H." Thus the Operation Orders one evening in France. Quite ordinary orders too, for bombing is carried out day and night incessantly--by day with the object of damaging material, by night chiefly to annoy the Hun and have a bad effect on his moral. Bombing by night is usually carried out on towns and villages known to be resting-places of the German troops, and it is part of the work of the R.F.C. to see that the Hun never rests. Fritz after a hard spell in the trenches is withdrawn to some shell-torn village behind his lines to rest. He enters the ruined house that forms his billet, and with a sigh of contentment at reaching such luxury after the miseries of trench life prepares to sleep in peace--a peace undisturbed by raiding Britons or well-placed mines. He dreams of home, fair-haired buxom damsels, wiirst and sauerkraut, and then out of the night comes the terror of the air. A bomb falls in his billet, exploding with a terrific report, and doing damage to the already ruined walls. Possibly a few of his comrades are wounded or killed. Other explosions take place close by, and the whole village becomes a mass of roaring Germans. Then the explosions cease, the noise of engines grows fainter, and all becomes quiet, but Fritz does not sleep again. His nerves are jangled, all possibility of sleep is gone, and he momentarily expects to hear more explosions, heralding the arrival of yet another bombing squadron. Next day he is in a worse condition than after a night in the trenches, and this continues night after night until the period of...
