Book excerpt: As warfare ground to a halt in the static, bloody trenches of the Western Front in 1914, the Allied command sought to lever Germany’s Turkish allies out of the war. Although the British had but a small standing peacetime army, she possessed the largest fleet in the world, and planned to use the awesome power of her huge naval guns to blast a passage through the Turkish defences of the strait. Constantinople would thereby be threatened and Turkey forced to sue for peace. The plan was bold, ambitious and doomed to fail. As the confident fleet steamed up through the Mediterranean, Padre Price kept a diary of his experiences and anecdotes of the Jolly Tars. However, his notes are filled with danger and bloodshed as the fleet encounter the brave and stubborn shore batteries, taking its baptism of fire. Though gallant and bloodied by the shells of the enemy, the fleet could not force the passage - a fateful failure that would lead to the landings at Gallipoli and further allied failures. Download or read book The Struggle for the Dardanelles written by Erich Prigge and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-02-28 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a detailed eye-witness account of the Dardanelles/Gallipoli campaign from the perspective of the Turks, through the eyes of Major Erich Prigge an adjutant to Marshal Liman von Sanders, the German commander-in-chief of the Ottoman forces in the Dardanelles. The focus is overwhelmingly on combat but includes related matters such as reconnaissance and logistics. Packed with specific information and technical detail as well as action, it should be of great interest to historians and enthusiasts. Prigge actually wrote two accounts of the campaign. The first, published in January 1916 while the fighting continued, revealed so much information that the Ottoman government asked the German authorities to suppress it. The other, published later that year, included coverage of the British evacuation. Although Prigge had removed many of the sensitive details of unit names, casualties etc., he had substantially rewritten and augmented many passages with lively descriptive material. Philip Rance here presents the first English translations of both versions, which together form one of the most complete and valuable accounts of this campaign available from the Turkish perspective.

Book excerpt: In December 1914, with their soldiers ‘chewing barbed wire in Flanders’, British politicians looked for alternatives to stalemate on the Western Front. Their gaze settled upon the Dardanelles. The Turks, recently defeated by lesser powers, couldn’t resist the combined might of the British and French empires. They would run at the sight of the Allied fleet. Or so some chose to believe. This book offers an unparalleled collection of first-hand accounts by those who made history and those who lived it, from prime ministers to private soldiers, from the offices of Whitehall to the dusty dugouts of the peninsula. All accounts were written at the time, without the benefit or bias of hindsight. How did a naval demonstration to aid the Russians lead to the first amphibious landings on a defended shore in modern times? Was it a flash of strategic genius, a worthwhile gamble or did ‘criminal idiots attempt the impossible’? Gain a new perspective on the Gallipoli Campaign as you watch the story unfold with each passing day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gardens of Hell examines the human side of one of the great tragedies of modern warfare, the Gallipoli campaign of the First World War. In February 1915, beginning with a naval attack on Turkey in the Dardanelles, a combined force of British, Australian, New Zealand, Indian, and French troops invaded the Gallipoli Peninsula only to face crushing losses and an ignominious retreat from what seemed a hopeless mission. Both sides in the battle suffered huge casualties, with a combined 127,000 servicemen killed during the action. Patrick Gariepy has pieced together the battle from combatantsÆ own words. Drawn from diaries and letters and from stories passed down through generations of families, these firsthand accounts offer an honest, heartfelt, and sometimes painful testimony to a doomed campaign fought by the men who lived through the fury, terror, and grief that was Gallipoli. Gardens of Hell is a sensitive acknowledgment of the enormous human cost of military folly and failure.
