Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Stanley on the Congo The preliminary arrangements were rapidly con cluded, and by the beginning of February 1879 Stanley was making his way to Zanzibar on board the steamer Albion, which had been chartered by the Committee for the purposes of the expedition. At Zanzibar he enlisted pagaz'is, or porters, and per formed various duties whilst awaiting the arrival of another steamer, the Barza, with other members of the expedition, and a cargo of stores for their use. These miscellaneous occupations included sending letters of advice and instruction to sundry officers who, during the time that Stanley had spent in Equatorial Africa, had been sent to Unyanyembe and elsewhere to establish trading-stations, make scientific observations, study native languages and customs, as far as possible suppress the slave trade, and otherwise endeavour to open up the country and form friendly relations with the natives. It was written to interest and inspire young boys of the second half of the 19th century. The book was based on a real journey made by Henry M Stanley GCB (1841 – 1904) a Welsh-American explorer, journalist, soldier, colonial administrator, author and politician who was famous for his exploration of Central Africa and his search for the missionary and explorer David Livingstone, whom he later claimed to have greeted with the now-famous line: "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?".

Book The Opening of a World Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Opening of a World Classic Reprint written by William Coppinger and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Opening of a World can research in its relations to commerce, and with this aid and private gifts the German Geographical Society has six different expeditions in Africa, led by Messrs. Buchner, Sentz, Rohlfs, Bohm, Pogge, and Flegel, respectively. Italy has taken her first installment of African territory by seizing the Bay of Assab, south of St. Paul de Loando, and she has sent mechanics and colonists there to form a settlement. The harbor is large, and can receive vessels of any tonnage. The Egyptian Government has ordered an official exploration of Soudan, both from a geographical and an economical point of view. At the extreme south of the continent the English are pushing northward their arms and institutions, building up an empire. The occupation of Quittah and Porto Novo, on the west coast, is urged on the British Government, and Dahomey and Ashantee will soon become, it is believed, possessions of the same sagacious power. Geographical Expeditions. The Geographical Society of Spain has sent Commander Sosten on a mission of discovery in eastern Africa. Two Portuguese expeditions are to start simultaneously from the Portuguese territories on the east and west coasts, which are intended, after founding a series of commercial stations, to meet in the interior. They will probably follow nearly the line of the Zambesi - the Mississippi of Africa. An Austrian party is to examine Kalakka, and another, led by Holub, is preparing to start from Cape Colony to penetrate to Zambesi and through Darfur. An Italian expedition is exploring Abyssinia, and thence to Soudan. A Russian party is journeying up the Nile. Book Stanley and Africa Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stanley and Africa Classic Reprint written by Eva Hope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stanley and Africa The great missionary himself has given us a very remarkable instance of the power of the Scriptures over the heathen mind - an instance which forms quite a romantic episode. In one of my early journeys, he says, with some of my companions, we came to a heathen village on the banks of the Orange River, between Namaqua Land and the Griqua country. Io had travelled far, and were hungry, thirsty, and fatigued. From the fear of being exposed to lions, we preferred remaining at the village to proceeding during the night. The people at the village rather roughly directed us to halt at a distance. W'e asked water, but they would not supply it. I offered the three or four buttons which still remained on my jacket for a little milk this also was refused. We had the prospect of another hungry night, at a distance from water, though within sight of the river. \ve found it difficult to recon cile ourselves to our lot; for, in addition to repeated rebuffs, the manners of the villagers excited our suspicion. \vhen twilight drew on, a woman approached from the heights beyond which the village lay. She bore on her head a bundle of wood, and had a vessel of milk in her hand. The latter, without Openingher lips, she handed to us, laid down the wood, and returned to the village. A second time she approached, with a cooking vessel on her head, and a leg of mutton in one hand, and water in the other. She sat down without saying a word, prepared the fire, and put on the meat. Ive asked her again and again who she was. She remained silent till affectionately entreated to give us a reason for such unlocked-for kindness to strangers. The solitary tear stole down her sable cheek when she replied, 'i love llim whose servants you are; and surely it is my duty to give you a cup of cold water in His name my heart is full, therefore I cannot speak the joy I feel to see you in this out-of-the-way place.' She was a lonely disciple indeed, and her only means of keeping the spiritual life awake within her was a copy of the Dutch New Testament, which she had got years before, when in a missionary school, previous to removing with her relatives far up the country. Download or read book With Stanley s Rear Column Classic Reprint written by J. Rose Troup and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Stanley's Rear Column ON my return from Africa in September 1888, my health being very much broken by what I had so recently gone through in the service of Mr. Stanley, I was much pained by reading most inaccurate accounts of what had taken place at Yambuya, and I was even more troubled to find the Emin Pasha Relief Committee - with my report in their possession - failed to correct the false statements made in the press, though I wrote requesting them to do me and my comrades this act of justice, because we were forbidden by our contracts to publish anything. Failing to obtain from them any satisfaction, I felt that to defend the honour of myself and comrades became my duty, especially when our action was condemned in a letter of Mr. Stanley's published April 1889. I knew of the paragraph in the contract by which I had agreed not to publish anything for six months after the appearance of the official publication of our leader, but I believed this was binding only on condition that he had fulfilled his part of the contract, and this he had failed to do, as he never supplied me with the tent, bed, Winchester rifle, canteen, and a due share of European provisions.
