Download or read book You Are What You Love written by James K. A. Smith and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2016-03-29 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You are what you love. But you might not love what you think. In this book, award-winning author James K. A. Smith shows that who and what we worship fundamentally shape our hearts. And while we desire to shape culture, we are not often aware of how culture shapes us. We might not realize the ways our hearts are being taught to love rival gods instead of the One for whom we were made. Smith helps readers recognize the formative power of culture and the transformative possibilities of Christian practices. He explains that worship is the "imagination station" that incubates our loves and longings so that our cultural endeavors are indexed toward God and his kingdom. This is why the church and worshiping in a local community of believers should be the hub and heart of Christian formation and discipleship. Following the publication of his influential work Desiring the Kingdom, Smith received numerous requests from pastors and leaders for a more accessible version of that book's content. No mere abridgment, this new book draws on years of Smith's popular presentations on the ideas in Desiring the Kingdom to offer a fresh, bottom-up rearticulation. The author creatively uses film, literature, and music illustrations to engage readers and includes new material on marriage, family, youth ministry, and faith and work. He also suggests individual and communal practices for shaping the Christian life.

Book excerpt: A novel full of heart, in which love, friendship, and charity teach a young woman to live a bigger life. When Madeline Stone walks away from Chicago and moves five hundred miles north to the coast of Lake Superior, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, she isn't prepared for how much her life will change. Charged with caring for an aging family friend, Madeline finds herself in the middle of beautiful nowhere with Gladys and Arbutus, two octogenarian sisters-one sharp and stubborn, the other sweeter than sunshine. As Madeline begins to experience the ways of the small, tight-knit town, she is drawn into the lives and dramas of its residents. It's a place where times are tough and debts run deep, but friendship, community, and compassion run deeper. As the story hurtles along-featuring a lost child, a dashed love, a car accident, a wedding, a fire, and a romantic reunion-Gladys, Arbutus, and the rest of the town teach Madeline more about life, love, and goodwill than she's learned in a lifetime. A heartwarming novel, South of Superior explores the deep reward in caring for others, and shows how one who is poor in pocket can be rich in so many other ways, and how little it often takes to make someone happy.
Download or read book Amor Belli written by Giulio Celotto and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2022-03-09 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compelled by the emperor Nero to commit suicide at age 25 after writing uncomplimentary poems, Latin poet Lucan nevertheless left behind a significant body of work, including the Bellum Civile (Civil War). Sometimes also called the Pharsalia, this epic describes the war between Julius Caesar and Pompey.Author Giulio Celotto provides an interpretation of this civil war based on the examination of an aspect completely neglected by previous scholarship: Lucan’s literary adaptation of the cosmological dialectic of Love and Strife. According to a reading that has found favor over the last three decades, the poem is an unconventional epic that does not conform to Aristotelian norms: Lucan composes a poem characterized by fragmentation and disorder, lacking a conventional teleology, and whose narrative flow is constantly delayed. Celotto’s study challenges this interpretation by illustrating how Lucan invokes imagery of cosmic dissolution, but without altogether obliterating epic norms. The poem transforms them from within, condemning the establishment of the Principate and the Julio-Claudian dynasty.

Book excerpt: Fiction. These patient, heartfelt stories of Midwestern life are shadowed by loss, by straightened economic circumstances (they're also, not coincidentally, stories of tenuous middle class life), by loneliness. And yet they also glow with an affecting and very human stoicism; their quiet desperation matched by a quiet decency amounting to hope. These characters endure, as their stories deserve to.
Download or read book The Legend of Kitch Iti kipi written by Carole Hare and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kitch-iti-kipi (The Big Spring) is one of Michigan's most popular tourist attractions. Many folk tales exist about this natural wonder found deep in the woods of the Upper Peninsula. Many of those stories were admittedly made up by John I. Bellair, a local businessman in the 1920s, in an effort to attract more visitors to the area. But what is the authentic Native American legend of Kitch-iti-kipi?The story in this book has been passed down orally in the author's Native American family for more than one hundred years. Although Natives seldom write down their folklore, the author's great-great-aunt actually did write this legend in a published booklet which was found when she passed away in 1969. That booklet was the author's inspiration for this book. The Legend of Kitch-iti-kipi reads like a Native version of Romeo and Juliet. In it, the deep love between a handsome brave and a young maiden drives a powerful chief to act out his jealousy. The results are tragic for all three!
Download or read book Shores Beyond Shores written by Irene Hasenberg Butter and published by TSB. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irene's first person Holocaust memoir, Shores Beyond Shores, is an account of how the heart keeps its common humanity in the most inhumane and turbulent of times. Irene's childhood is cut short when she and her family are deported to Nazi-controlled prison camps and finally Bergen-Belsen, where she is a fellow prisoner with Anne Frank. Later forbidden from speaking about her experiences by the American relatives who cared for her, Irene is now making up for lost time. Irene has shared the stage with peacemakers such as the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, and Elie Wiesel, and she considers it her duty to tell her story now and on behalf of the six million other Jews who have been permanently silenced. Book long description: Irene Butter's memoir of her experiences before, during and after the Holocaust is not a recounting of misery and tragedy; rather it is the genuine story of a girl coming to terms with a terrible event and choosing to view herself as a survivor instead of a victim. When the Dutch police knock on their door, Irene and her family are forced to leave their home and board trains meant for cattle. They are taken to Nazi-controlled prison camps and finally to Bergen-Belsen, where Irene is a fellow prisoner with Anne Frank. With limited access to food, shelter, and warm clothing, Irene's family needs nothing short of a miracle to survive. Irene's memoir tells the story of her experiences as a young girl before, during, and after the Holocaust, highlighting how her family came to terms with the catastrophe and how she, over time, came to view herself as a survivor rather than a victim. Throughout the book, her first-person account celebrates the love and empathy that can persist even in the most inhumane conditions. Irene's words send a poignant message against hate at a time when anti-Semitic, fascist and xenophobic movements around the globe are experiencing a resurgence. Irene, through her book, reminds us of the impact one person can have in choosing to follow the mantra, 'never a bystander' -- a phrase she adopted only 33 years ago, after her own voice was silenced by her cousins in the years after the Holocaust. Now, Irene Hasenberg Butter is a well-known inspirational speaker on her experiences during World War II.
Download or read book Mis Pensamientos Mis Percepciones Mi Poesia written by Leslie R. Prime and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leslie Prime is a native of Detroit, Michigan. She has been writing for over thirty years and is thrilled to realize her dream of being a published poet come to fruition. Though writing was her first love, being a teacher of Spanish and English as a Second Language is her pride and joy. Her career path and study of culture and at least nine languages, has blessed her to travel, live, study, teach or work in Switzerland, Norway, Spain, Mexico, The Dominican Republic, Jamaica, The Cayman Islands, Colombia, Venezuela, The Bahamas, England, Germany and formerly East Germany, Morocco, The Canary Islands, France, Denmark, Belgium, Italy and Canada. She enjoys retreats in Sedona, Arizona a place of beauty and inspiration to her writing. Sedona is one of the most peaceful places she has come to know where she reflects upon society, her life, her family and her heritage. Though Detroit is where she grew up, she has been a resident of Washington, D.C., Brattleboro, Vermont and Miami, Florida. Through her writing, Leslie brings a unique thought and perception to her poetry. She not only has a global view of people and society, but is able to dissect and bring a microscopic awareness to the core of ones feelings, senses and environment. In her poetry, she often poses questions she asks of herself and her readers, as this offers a reflective component and a depth of insight for all to ponder over time. Leslies first poem, Looking out of My Window was written at the age of thirteen. Ever since that time, Leslie knew her writing would forever be a cornerstone for reflection, introspection and healing in her life. She is inspired daily by that which she is deeply moved and still longs for a simplistic life of long walks, reading, writing and daily siestas. For she feels that in todays digital age and the fast pace of American society, the true art of taking ones time and living a quality life suffers extinction. To all of her readers she encourages them to relax, read, reflect, ponder and enjoy her first book, Mis Pensamientos, Mis Percepciones y Mi Poesia - My Thoughts, My Perceptions and My Poetry.
