Download or read book The Honest Art Dictionary written by The Art History Babes and published by Frances Lincoln. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this art dictionary like no other, The Art History Babes (the hosts behind the prolific podcast) break down the elitist world of art with definitions of over 300 essential art terms. Art speak is infamously alienating, strange, and confusing as hell. Think stereotypical, stylish art dealers who describe art as 'derivative' and 'dynamic' – or stuffy auction houses filled with portraits of dead white people called 'Old Masters'. What do these words mean? Where did they come from? And how can you actually use them? Spanning art history, iconic movements, peculiar words, and pretentious phrases – after reading this book, you'll be able to lay down that art jargon with the best of them. From avant-garde to oeuvre, the Harlem Renaissance to New Objectivity, museum fatigue to memento mori – the Babes use their whip-smart humor, on-point knowledge, and a heavy dose of candor to explain even the most complex ideas in bite-sized definitions, as in: ACTION PAINTING (n.) – If Jackie Chan had buckets of paint strapped to his arms and legs in Rush Hour 2, and there just happened to be a blank canvas nearby, you would end up with action painting. […] IMPASTO (n.) – Have you ever gotten up close to a painting, looked at it, and thought: “Those brushstrokes are sensual as hell.”? That’s how I feel about impasto, a painting style that involves applying thick, textured strokes of paint using a brush or palette knife or other tool of your choice. […] UKIYO-E (n.) – Beautiful ladies, kabuki actors, epic landscapes, sumo wrestlers, people navigating city streets, and sex stuff! These are some of the common subjects of ukiyo-e art produced in Japan during the Edo period (1603–1868.) […] With illustrations from Carmen Casado – The Honest Art Dictionary is a valuable starter pack for those new to the study of art history, those re-exploring the discipline, or those simply interested in impressing their friends during a trip to the local art museum.

Download or read book The Witch as Muse written by Linda C. Hults and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-03-29 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occult topics have long fascinated artists, and the subject of witches—their imagined bodies and fantastic rituals—was a popular one for painters and printmakers in early modern Europe. Focusing on several artists in depth, Linda C. Hults probes the historical and theoretical contexts of their work to examine the ways witches were depicted and the motivations for those depictions. While studying the work of such artists as Dürer, Baldung, Jacques de Gheyn II, and Goya, Hults discerns patterns suggesting that the imagery of witchcraft served both as an expression of artistic license and as a tool of self-promotion for the artists. These imagined images of witches were designed to catch the attention of powerful and important patrons as witchcraft was being debated in political and intellectual centers. Dürer's early engravings of witnesses made in the wake of the Malleus maleficarum of 1487 were crucial in linking the seductive or aged female form with the dangers of witchcraft. The polarized idea of gender pervaded many aspects of early modern culture, including art theory. As the deluded female witch embodied the abuse of imagination and fantasy, so the male artist presented himself as putting those faculties to productive and reasoned use.

  • Release : 2023-04-25
  • ISBN : 9781736762554
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book The Witch s Art of Incantation written by Roger J. Horne and published by Moon Over the Mountain Press. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new and expanded edition, including 180 individual incantations rooted in the lore and age-old texts of previous centuries, The Witch's Art of Incantation reveals the often-overlooked diversity of the incantatory arts: charms that beckon, charms that command, charms that poison, charms that bless and heal, charms that remember, charms that terrify, charms that praise and exalt. Because each charm is accompanied by an approximate date, region, and associated source text, student witches will sharpen their knowledge of folkloric texts while engaging with these rich and potent spells. The practical methods provided in the introduction, though seemingly simple, outline rarely discussed methods of incantation, including the construction of the magical listener and pairings with sympathetic and contagious ritual acts. New to this edition is a chapter devoted to heretical psalmistry as a branch of the witch's incantatory arts, including both a collection of practical psalms and a complete index of the magical uses of the psalms. Roger J. Horne is a writer, folk witch, and modern animist. His spiritual practice is informed by his ancestral currents of Scottish cunning craft and Appalachian herb-doctoring. He is the author of Folk Witchcraft, The Witch's Devil, and other works. Through his writing, Horne seeks to help other witches rediscover the living traditions of folk craft. Book Waking the Witch

Download or read book Waking the Witch written by Pam Grossman and published by Gallery Books. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the podcast host of The Witch Wave and practicing witch Pam Grossman—who Vulture has dubbed the “Terry Gross of witches”—comes an exploration of the world’s fascination with witches, why they have intrigued us for centuries and why they’re more relevant now than ever. When you think of a witch, what do you picture? Pointy black hat, maybe a broomstick. But witches in various guises have been with us for millennia. In Waking the Witch, Pam Grossman explores the impact of the world’s most magical icon. From the idea of the femme fatale in league with the devil to the bewitching pop culture archetypes in Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Harry Potter; from the spooky ladies in fairy tales to the rise of contemporary witchcraft, witches reflect the power and potential of women. Part cultural analysis, part memoir, Waking the Witch traces the author’s own journey on the path to witchcraft, and how this has helped her find self-empowerment and purpose. It celebrates witches past, present, and future, and reveals the critical role they have played—and will continue to play—in the world as we know it. “Deftly illuminating the past while beckoning us towards the future, Waking the Witch has all the makings of a feminist classic. Wise, relatable, and real, Pam Grossman is the witch we need for our times” (Ami McKay, author of The Witches of New York).

Book A Discourse on the Damned Art of Witchcraft

Download or read book A Discourse on the Damned Art of Witchcraft written by William Perkins and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2012-07-05 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working from the text of Exodus 22:18, "Thou shalt not suffer a Witch to live," Perkins delivers one of the most penetrating discourses on the subject of the devil, witchcraft and the occult in its various forms. He sets forth this treatise showing that witchcraft was a common sin in his own day, and it is, no doubt, a common sin in our day. He demonstrates the diverse ways that Satan uses witchcraft in its various forms, and shows how people of all kinds can be involved in the occult, either by entering into a covenant with Satan willfully, or they may enter into a league with Satan unintentionally, through superstition. He covers four main points: 1) What witchcraft is, 2) What is the ground of the practice of witchcraft, 3) How many kinds and differences there are of witchcraft, and 4) Its punishment. This is a powerful, biblical exposition of the Law of God and its application concerning this topic. This is not a scan or a facsimile, but a newly typeset work updated and made easily readable, with an active table of contents.
