Book Plato and the Question of Beauty

Download or read book Plato and the Question of Beauty written by Drew A. Hyland and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-05-28 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drew A. Hyland, one of Continental philosophy's keenest interpreters of Plato, takes up the question of beauty in three Platonic dialogues, the Hippias Major, Symposium, and Phaedrus. What Plato meant by beauty is not easily characterized, and Hyland's close readings show that Plato ultimately gives up on the possibility of a definition. Plato's failure, however, tells us something important about beauty—that it cannot be reduced to logos. Exploring questions surrounding love, memory, and ideal form, Hyland draws out the connections between beauty, the possibility of philosophy, and philosophical living. This new reading of Plato provides a serious investigation into the meaning of beauty and places it at the very heart of philosophy.

Book Socrates Daimonic Art

Download or read book Socrates Daimonic Art written by Elizabeth S. Belfiore and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-08 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite increasing interest in the figure of Socrates and in love in ancient Greece, no recent monograph studies these topics in all four of Plato's dialogues on love and friendship. This book provides important new insights into these subjects by examining Plato's characterization of Socrates in Symposium, Phaedrus, Lysis and the often neglected Alcibiades I. It focuses on the specific ways in which the philosopher searches for wisdom together with his young interlocutors, using an art that is 'erotic', not in a narrowly sexual sense, but because it shares characteristics attributed to the daimon Eros in Symposium. In all four dialogues, Socrates' art enables him, like Eros, to search for the beauty and wisdom he recognizes that he lacks and to help others seek these same objects of erôs. Belfiore examines the dialogues as both philosophical and dramatic works, and considers many connections with Greek culture, including poetry and theater.

Book excerpt: The Wisdom of Beauty is an artist's credo, a statement of personal and philosophical reflection on the "art phenomenon" in human experience. This extended essay starts with the author's experience as a painter, moves through successive reflections on what constitutes "the good" in both life and art, and returns to the way his best work as a painter emerges from the disappearance of "self" into the process. The book is a dialogue on the relationship of ethics (the good) and aesthetics (the beautiful), which arrives at the author's unique vision of their inseparability and the guidance this provides for both art and life.

Book Against Happiness

  • Author : Eric G. Wilson
  • Publisher : Macmillan + ORM
  • Release : 2008-01-22
  • ISBN : 1429944218

Download or read book Against Happiness written by Eric G. Wilson and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2008-01-22 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans are addicted to happiness. When we're not popping pills, we leaf through scientific studies that take for granted our quest for happiness, or read self-help books by everyone from armchair philosophers and clinical psychologists to the Dalai Lama on how to achieve a trouble-free life: Stumbling on Happiness; Authentic Happiness: Using the New Positive Psychology to Realize Your Potential for Lasting Fulfillment; The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living. The titles themselves draw a stark portrait of the war on melancholy. More than any other generation, Americans of today believe in the transformative power of positive thinking. But who says we're supposed to be happy? Where does it say that in the Bible, or in the Constitution? In Against Happiness, the scholar Eric G. Wilson argues that melancholia is necessary to any thriving culture, that it is the muse of great literature, painting, music, and innovation—and that it is the force underlying original insights. Francisco Goya, Emily Dickinson, Marcel Proust, and Abraham Lincoln were all confirmed melancholics. So enough Prozac-ing of our brains. Let's embrace our depressive sides as the wellspring of creativity. What most people take for contentment, Wilson argues, is living death, and what the majority takes for depression is a vital force. In Against Happiness: In Praise of Melancholy, Wilson suggests it would be better to relish the blues that make humans people.

Book Philosophy and Salvation

Download or read book Philosophy and Salvation written by Carlos Blanco and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all seek salvation, claims Blanco, because we all become prisoners of negativity. Humanity wants to be saved, we want to overcome the negativity that so often enslaves us. But, where is the saviour to be found, and where is the source of salvation? In Philosophy and Salvation Blanco argues that salvation may only come from the infinite springs of the word. 'The word saves us: the word of science, the word manifested in art, the word of a society which promises something for itself . . . Humanity understands itself through language: human beings use words in order to know each other and to cooperate in the edification of something that may transcend them. The word invites us, and in fact leads us to transcendence. This is salvation: to inaugurate a new world in which the former negativity may be overcome'. Blanco looks back over the history of philosophical and theological thought to bring his argument to life for all seeking salvation today.
