Book Wisdom at the Crossroads

Download or read book Wisdom at the Crossroads written by Thomas G Casey and published by Messenger Publications. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wisdom at the Crossroads is an introduction to the life and thought of the gifted Jesuit priest, theologian, author and educator, Michael Paul Gallagher SJ (1939-2015). It follows his journey from the simplicity of an Irish rural childhood to the more complex world he soon encountered. That changing world prompted him to think deeply about the question of faith in our times, the effects of a shifting culture on our perceptions, and the challenge of unbelief and atheism as it manifests itself today. The book illuminates Michael Paul’s rare gift – both in personal conversation and in the written word – of helping people to move from a detached consideration of faith to an awareness of what was deepest in their own hearts, for it was from that hidden layer of wonder that he believed the journey of faith could unfold. Being attuned to the depths in his own heart, he was able to identify the liberating wavelength in the lives of others and in the culture of our time, awakening many people to a vision that healed them into hope.

Book excerpt: This book describes the remarkable culture of jeliya, a musical and verbal art from the Manding region of West Africa. Using an embodied practice as her methodology, the author reveals how she and her music teachers live "in between" local and global cultures. Her journey spans 20 years of fieldwork presented through personal and intimate stories, first as a student of the balafon instrument, then as a patron of the music. Tensions build in both the music and in social relations that require resolutions, underscoring the differences between two world views. Through balafon lessons, the author embodies values such as patience, courage, and generosity, resulting in a transformative practice that leads her to better understand her position vis-à-vis that of her jeli teachers. Meanwhile, jeliya itself, despite having been transmitted from teacher to student for 800 years, is currently in peril. Jelis cite modern globalized culture and people like the author herself as both a source of the problem as well as the potential solution.

Book The Wisdom of the Cross and the Power of the Spirit in the Corinthian Church

Download or read book The Wisdom of the Cross and the Power of the Spirit in the Corinthian Church written by Cletus L. Hull and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cross of Christ crucified symbolized the central theme of Paul’s ministry. In his letter to the Corinthians, the apostle commenced his correspondence with the message about the cross and power of God (1 Cor 1:18, NRSV). The proposal for this paper utilizes the method analogia scripturae. Set within the wisdom motif of the Greco-Roman world, this study is dedicated to the examination of the apostle’s Christology in the context of 1 Cor 1:18–25 and the pneumatology in 1 Cor 2:9–16 as both pericopes are juxtaposed in his epistle. Essentially, the thesis concerns the grounding of the pneumatology of Paul with his Christology in 1 Corinthians. The Corinthian church required clarification and pastoral wisdom with their pneumatic experiences; thus, Paul recognized that a strong theology of the cross complemented their encounters with the Spirit. The question for biblical studies involves a lively tension of the pneumatology of the Spirit with a robust Christology. Because the power of God throughout this passage has the cross as its paradigm, the structure of the book leads to the significance of the apostle’s pneumatological contribution of the cross and Christ crucified (1 Cor 1:18; 2:2). For this reason, a strong Christology must ground the pneumatology of the Pauline corpus. This study in biblical literature commences a new discussion in ecumenical dialogue between pneumatic experiences in the church and christological issues in Scripture.

Book Criminal Justice at the Crossroads

Download or read book Criminal Justice at the Crossroads written by William R. Kelly and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past forty years, the criminal justice system in the United States has engaged in a very expensive policy failure, attempting to punish its way to public safety, with dismal results. So-called "tough on crime" policies have not only failed to effectively reduce crime, recidivism, and victimization but also created an incredibly inefficient system that routinely fails the public, taxpayers, crime victims, criminal offenders, their families, and their communities. Strategies that focus on behavior change are much more productive and cost effective for reducing crime than punishment, and in this book, William R. Kelly discusses the policy, process, and funding innovations and priorities that the United States needs to effectively reduce crime, recidivism, victimization, and cost. He recommends proactive, evidence-based interventions to address criminogenic behavior; collaborative decision making from a variety of professions and disciplines; and a focus on innovative alternatives to incarceration, such as problem-solving courts and probation. Students, professionals, and policy makers alike will find in this comprehensive text a bracing discussion of how our criminal justice system became broken and the best strategies by which to fix it.

Book excerpt: Despite human fallings, our own and those of others, we have a capacity, a power, even a destiny for achieving happiness in our personal relationships and enriching the lives of our communities. At The Crossroads: A Vision Of Hope realistically examines the promise and peril we face in a world of rapid and sometimes threatening changes, a world of advances in knowledge and declines in civility, and provides reasons for hope "based not on wishful thinking, but on the timeless values and ideas which have sustained and do sustain us through all sorts of sociological and political and economic changes". At The Crossroads: A Vision Of Hope reads like a visit with a friend concerned about our future, a friend who happens to be a history teacher and lawyer as well as a priest and bishop, a friend who, therefore, provides us with a unique perspective which might be called the best of both worlds.

Book Stand at the Crossroads

Download or read book Stand at the Crossroads written by Fred Depold and published by Vmi Pub. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a teen, one drink or hit might seem harmless. Exposing his own temptations, uses and addictions to drugs, Fred DePold shares how millions of Americans look back to that first choice as one that led to a lifetime of disappointments, broken lives and families, ruined relationships and even death. DePold’s life of drug and alcohol abuse started casually as a teen. A beer here and a joint there turned into 20 years of struggle that affected his relationships with friends, family and acquaintances. He recognizes that partying can seem fun and first but in the long term it will destroy your life. “Stand at the Crossroads” is a firsthand look at the issues that one must face on whether or not to join the party. While some of the drugs have changed over the years, the effects on peoples’ lives are the same, ruined and broken. “Stand at the Crossroads” is written with the hopes that the millions of teenagers and young adults struggling or experimenting with drugs/alcohol and or thinking the drugs and or alcohol crowd is cool, will read this and take to heart the learning experiences of those that have gone before them. After reading his story DePold prays that they will turn from their addictions, make a u-turn and start living a different better blessed life. The main theme of the book is base on scripture found in Jeremiah 6:16 (NIV): This is what the LORD says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it and you will find rest for your souls. In this verse Jeremiah is instructing us to learn from others that have gone before us. In essence they have been there and done that. Listen to them learn from them and you will find peace. In an attempt to leave their addictions behind many have tried and failed. But many more have overcome their there destructive behavior. You can too! It’s time to make a u-turn!
