Book Intelligent Transportation Systems Benefits Costs Deployment and Lessons Learned

Download or read book Intelligent Transportation Systems Benefits Costs Deployment and Lessons Learned written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) provide a proven set of strategies for addressing the challenges of assuring safety and reducing congestion, while accommodating the growth in transit ridership and freight movement. This report presents information on the performance of deployed ITS under each of these goal areas, as well as information on the costs, deployment levels, and lessons learned regarding ITS deployment and operations. The report, and the collection of four Web-based resources upon which it is based, have been developed by the U.S. DOT's ITS Joint Program Office (JPO) to support informed decision making regarding ITS deployment. This report discusses 17 different areas of ITS application. These chapters are divided into two sections discussing technologies deployed on the transportation infrastructure and those deployed within vehicles. The 14 different infrastructure applications discussed can be grouped into ITS strategies applied to roadways, transit, management and operations of transportation systems, and freight movement. Lessons learned during ITS planning implementation and deployment, are highlighted throughout the report and in a chapter following the review of ITS applications."--Technical report documentation page.

Book Improving Motor Carrier Safety Measurement

Download or read book Improving Motor Carrier Safety Measurement written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year roughly 100,000 fatal and injury crashes occur in the United States involving large trucks and buses. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in the U.S. Department of Transportation works to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks and buses. FMCSA uses information that is collected on the frequency of approximately 900 different violations of safety regulations discovered during (mainly) roadside inspections to assess motor carriers' compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, as well as to evaluate their compliance in comparison with their peers. Through use of this information, FMCSA's Safety Measurement System (SMS) identifies carriers to receive its available interventions in order to reduce the risk of crashes across all carriers. Improving Motor Carrier Safety Measurement examines the effectiveness of the use of the percentile ranks produced by SMS for identifying high-risk carriers, and if not, what alternatives might be preferred. In addition, this report evaluates the accuracy and sufficiency of the data used by SMS, to assess whether other approaches to identifying unsafe carriers would identify high-risk carriers more effectively, and to reflect on how members of the public use the SMS and what effect making the SMS information public has had on reducing crashes.

Book ITS Band Roadside to Vehicle Communications in a Highway Setting

Download or read book ITS Band Roadside to Vehicle Communications in a Highway Setting written by Babak Daneshrad and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) between automobiles and the road side stations can be accomplished in a special 75 MHz band at 5.9 GHz frequency that has been set aside for transportation use by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The Intelligent Transportation Society of America and the United States Department of Transportation are promoting the development of the Wireless Access in a Vehicular Environment (WAVE) IEEE 1609 protocols, which have been adopted for trial use, and the IEEE 802.11p WAVE amendment, which is being considered by the IEEE 802.11 Working Group. In the first part of an on-going California Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways (PATH) project, UCLA and UC Berkeley researchers collaborated under Task Order 5214 to develop a DSRC/WAVE test bed for testing and evaluation of the radio and communication protocol standards in the context of high-value Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) applications.
