Book The Creation of Monuments

Download or read book The Creation of Monuments written by Alistair Oswald and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neolithic Causewayed enclosures are amongst the oldest, rarest and most enigmatic of the ancient monuments found in Europe. First recognised as a distinct type in the 1920s, sixty-nine certain or probable examples have now been identified in the British Isles. As a class, they are of outstanding importance, for while their precise functions remain unclear, they represent the first non-funerary monuments and the earliest instance of the enclosure of open space. This book presents an overview of the findings of a systematic national programme of research, carried out by the RCHME, now merged with English Heritage. Every certain, probable and suggested causewayed enclosure in England has been investigated through integrated aerial and field survey. Specialist reconnaissance flying has been undertaken, along with the thorough analysis of aerial photographs taken from the 1920s onwards. This has greatly increased the number of sites known, turning the spotlight onto many that have received little or no archaeological attention in the past. The aerial surveys now available offer a new basis for improved understanding. Analytical field investigations of the few causewayed enclosures that are well preserved as earthworks have also squeezed fresh information out of even those long familiar to archaeologists. Far from merely ‘dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s’ of past fieldworkers, these detailed surveys have led to the rejection of some long-held theories and the proposal of new interpretations. This book significantly advances the understanding of causewayed enclosures both as individual monuments and as a class. It is a major contribution to the understanding of the British Neolithic, and to ‘landscape archaeology’ more generally.

Book Birds of the Strait of Gibraltar

Download or read book Birds of the Strait of Gibraltar written by Clive Finlayson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clive Finlayson, a native of the Rock and a trained ornithologist, presents a fascinating account of this region and its resident and transitory bird life. The Strait of Gibraltar is famous as a major point of passage for Palaearctic birds migrating between their European breeding grounds and their winter quarters in Africa. The first chapter of the book describes the area, which broadly defined includes the Coto Donana in the north and the Merja Zerga in the south, and the geographic and climatological characteristics which make it a suitable crossing place. In scope this book goes beyond the strict definition of the Strait and, following Irby's 19th Century work, examines the rich area where Europe meets Africa. The chapters which follow describe in detail the migration patterns of the principal passage species including their origins, destinations and overall numbers, showing how the precise conditions of weather and visibility affect the specific choice of route and timing of the crossing. The breeding and wintering bird communities are then considered and the ornithology of the entire region summarized. Whether or not you have ever witnessed the thousands of raptors, storks and other birds that may make this legendary crossing in a single day, this book will conjure the spirit of this extraordinary place. Delightful illustrations by lan Willis complete an important and entertaining book.

Book The Gods Machines

Download or read book The Gods Machines written by Wun Chok Bong and published by Frog Books. This book was released on 2008-05-27 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the author’s decipherment of prehistoric carvings and the application of mathematical measurements, The Gods’ Machines shows how “unknown” phenomena from Angkor Wat to Stonehenge to crop circles are actually powerhouses built by an advanced extraterrestrial civilization for tapping electromagnetic energy. The book traces the development of that civilization on Earth over 5,000 years, revealing how all these structures are aligned according to a universal formula: an angle of 135 degrees at which Earth’s energy has been tapped by the alien creators of these monuments. These fascinating theories not only explain our distant past, but also open the door to a future of power technology and space travel. Megalithic sites such as Newgrange and Stonehenge are constructed with quartz- and iron-rich stones with electrical conduction properties — minerals also found atop Aztec temple and inside crop circles. These stones, according to the author, served as dry cell batteries when heated and stressed, and supplied energy to the builders’ traveling vehicles. Most interestingly, the author has tested his theory on today’s crop circles. The Gods’ Machines is certain to stimulate debate among readers interested in alternative history, ancient civilization, and extraterrestrial intelligence.

Download or read book Power from Wind written by Richard Leslie Hills and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-09-12 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wind is a fickle source of power. Windspeeds are frequently too low to be of any practical use, so that windpower has generally remained a marginal resource. Since the inception of windpower around 1000 AD, technology has been deployed to obtain the most economical power from wind. The author traces its technical evolution, concentrating on the growth in understanding of wind and charting crucial developments in windmill design. The history of the windmill is focused on North Western Europe, drawing on the origins of the first horizontal windmills in Persia, Tibet and China. Industrial applications such as in textiles, papermaking and mining are examined. Gradually, windmills were improved but were finally eclipsed by steam engines in the nineteenth century due to increased levels of industrialisation. The book concludes with a look at the recent re-emergence of windpower as a viable source of power in the wake of the energy crisis.

Book Bats Baronets and Battle

Download or read book Bats Baronets and Battle written by Tim Dudgeon and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-03-26 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bats, baronets and Battle is more than just about cricket. This is a history full of colourful characters eccentric baronets with a fondness for gambling, forthright women who wished to take their role and the game beyond an excuse to wear a pretty dress, and brothers from local villages who played the sport at the highest levels home and abroad. If Sussex was the cradle for the earliest of cricket, the villages around Battle were there at the games birth. From Georgian times and the murky world of 18th century politics, Tim Dudgeon traces Battle crickets role from its role in 18th century Georgian gambling though the fear of 19th century rural unrest and the dawn of the professional game to the tragic impact of two world wars and into the modern era. The story he uncovers is an intriguing one that has local people and communities at its heart, but throws light on their links with events and forces that have shaped our world today.

Book The Prehistory Of Scotland

Download or read book The Prehistory Of Scotland written by V. Gordon Childe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, originally published in 1935, sought to reveal the significance of Scottish prehistory for the development of understanding of European prehistory. Written at a time of rapid accumulation of new relics and monuments and the insights from them, Professor Childe presented some important new data and made tentative conclusions for the future results from these finds. After an introduction to the geography of Scotland the book looks at evidence from cairns, tombs and stone circles and then addresses chronologically the evidence from Early Bronze Age to Late and onto the Iron Age, with a chapter devoted to forts, towns and castles. It ends with a discussion of what happened in the Dark Ages and addresses questions about the Celts and the Picts and the diversity of the peoples in Scotland.
