Book excerpt: In Alexander Parsons's Leaving Disneyland, Doc Kane is sixteen years into a twenty-year murder sentence. Days away from a parole hearing, he means to get out and start a new life as a Square John--a law-abiding citizen. Within the predatory confines of Tyburn Penitentiary, however, he has debts to pay. To start, Doc has his duties as a "heavy" in the D.C. Blacks, a gang that has protected him. Then there is his new cellmate, a young dealer doing life without parole whose ignorance of the prison's code threatens them both. Finally, there are the guards: Sergeant Grippe, who is bent on "rehabilitating" Doc, and Raven, whose intentions are veiled but no less menacing. Beyond these dangers, Doc faces a deeper dilemma, one embodied by Dead Earl, a thumbless junkie and reminder of a past Doc would deny. The experience of sixteen years surviving in a violent prison has shaped Doc as profoundly as a river does its course. And if character is fate, Doc's chances for a life on the straight-and-narrow are slim unless he can reshape himself. This, he discovers, is the real struggle. If he's to have any hope for his future, he must first confront his past.

Book The Complete Poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley

Download or read book The Complete Poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley written by Percy Bysshe Shelley and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 1009 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark event in literary scholarship, the publication of the Johns Hopkins edition of The Complete Poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley makes available for the first time critically edited clear texts of all poems and translations that Shelley published or circulated among friends, as well as diplomatic texts of his significant incomplete poetic drafts and fragments. Edited upon historical principles by Donald H. Reiman and Neil Fraistat, the multi-volume edition will offer more poems and fragments than any previous collective edition, arranged in the order of their first circulation. These texts are followed by the most extensive collations hitherto available and detailed commentaries that describe their contextual origins and subsequent reception. Rejected passages of released poems appear as supplements to those poems, while other poetic drafts that Shelley rejected or left incomplete at his death will be grouped according to either their publication histories or the notebooks in which they survive. Writing to his publisher in 1813, Shelley expressed the hope that two of his major works "should form one volume"; nearly two centuries later, the second volume of the Johns Hopkins edition of The Complete Poetry fulfills that wish for the first time. This volume collects two important pieces: Queen Mab and The Esdaile Notebook. Privately issued in 1813, Queen Mab was perhaps Shelley's most intellectually ambitious work, articulating his views of science, politics, history, religion, society, and individual human relations. Subtitled A Philosophical Poem: With Notes, it became his most influential -- and pirated -- poem during much of the nineteenth century, a favorite among reformers and radicals. The Esdaile Notebook, a cycle of fifty-eight early poems, exhibits an astonishing range of verse forms. Unpublished until 1964, this sequence is vital in understanding how the poet mastered his craft. As in the acclaimed first volume, these works have been critically edited by Donald H. Reiman and Neil Fraistat. The poems are presented as Shelley intended, with textual variants included in footnotes. Following the poems are extensive discussions of the circumstances of their composition and the influences they reflect; their publication or circulation by other means; their reception at the time of publication and in the decades since; their re-publication, both authorized and unauthorized; and their place in Shelley's intellectual and aesthetic development.

Book excerpt: "When he looks at me, I feel beautiful. I feel clean and refreshed, as if I had just stepped from my bath, and so fragile that I know even a touch could injure me. And yet I am strong, for I know I have power over him." In this hauntingly beautiful love story told in classic form, Ursula, a 16-year-old German refugee, and Russell, an American tank commander, meet in a "city of the dead" in the last days of the Second World War in Europe. At first, Ursula hides herself behind a child's shield—"the way she hunches up her shoulders and smiles shyly from under her brow"—but Jack Halley, Russell's friend and confidant, soon sees the incredibly beautiful young woman behind the mask. He assumes the role of Friar Laurence and tries to help the "beloved enemies" reach each other across the war's barriers of evil and guilt. "This is wrong. Monstrous! If we can show no mercy now, in this hour of victory, here in these ruins reeking with death and destruction!—when all we know of the girl and what happened here cries out for the madness of war to end!—then…what will become of us?"

But the Quantico-trained forensic investigator is finding her skills aren't enough when a ferociously intelligent killer strikes Dublin. The modus operandi is as perplexing as it is macabre. What connects the two seemingly disparate, high-profile victims? Their corpses refuse to give up their secrets and the crime scenes prove a forensic investigator's worst nightmare. Reilly soon suspects that she may be dealing with a killer - or killers - who know all about crime scene investigation. The police are just as frustrated by the crimes' impenetrable nature and it's only when a third murder occurs - equally graphic and elaborate in its execution - that they discover that this particular killer is using a very specific blueprint for his crimes. Who is the killer's next victim, the real target? And what's his endgame?

But something far more sinister than the annual harvest is about to rise out of the earth in this New York Times bestseller. “[A] brilliantly imagined horror story.” —The Boston Globe Lady: In the town of Pequot Landing during the Great Depression, a young man becomes transfixed by a beautiful, mysterious widow. As Woody gets closer to her, he finds that Lady Harleigh is haunted—not just by grief, but by a scandalous secret that, if revealed, could change Pequot Landing forever. Lady is a New York Times bestseller. “A spellbinder with a twisted ending . . . enchanting entertainment. You can’t put it down.” —The Des Moines Register All That Glitters: In five interlocking novellas, cynical writer Charlie Caine recalls the leading ladies of long-lost Hollywood: Babe, a red-hot, peroxide-blond beauty with secrets that could have burned Tinseltown to the ground; Belinda, whose daughter was as cruel as she was lovely; Claire, who would do anything to stay in the public eye; April, fragile, beautiful, and mad; and Maude, Hollywood’s most respected matron, whose happy marriage had a lie at its heart. “One unforgettable novel with the power to shock . . . very believable . . . [readers] will find pleasure in guessing which real-life actresses Tryon has used as models.” —The Washington Post
