Book Wind Tunnel and Flight Test Stability and Control Derivatives for the X 24A Lifting Body

Download or read book Wind Tunnel and Flight Test Stability and Control Derivatives for the X 24A Lifting Body written by Paul W. Kirsten and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of determining the stability and control derivatives of the X-24A lifting body from flight test data and correlating these results with predictions were successfully accomplished. Stability and control derivatives were extracted from flight data using a digital-analog computer matching program. Although the accuracy of results varied for individual derivatives and test maneuvers, the overall quality of test results from the matching program was felt to be quite good. The Mach number and angle of attack ranges investigated were approximately 0.4 to 1.6 and 0 to 20 degrees, respectively. Differences between the flight-derived values and wind tunnel and theoretically predicted values of several derivatives were found throughout the flight envelope. Some of these differences were of sufficient magnitude to significantly alter the predicted handling of qualities of the vehicle. In addition, large discrepancies from wind tunnel predictions were discovered in the static directional stability derivative at supersonic Mach numbers and high angles of attack. These decrepancies were attributed to aerodynamic power effects from the rocket engine. (Author).

Book Flight Planning and Conduct of the X 24A Lifting Body Flight Test Program

Download or read book Flight Planning and Conduct of the X 24A Lifting Body Flight Test Program written by Johnny G. Armstrong and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective to obtain piloted-low-speed flight test data on the SV- 5 re-entry configuration was accomplished by the X-24A in 28 flights over a 27- month time period. Sufficient data were obtained to allow detailed reporting in the areas of handling qualities, performance, stability derivatives, flight loads, flight control system, unpowered landings, vehicle system operation, and mass characteristics. Extensive use was made of a six-degree of freedom simulator and between-flight determination of stability derivatives in expanding the envelope incrementally to 1.6 Mach number. Unexpected and significant reductions in directional stability were experienced with the rocket engine on. Handling quality problems encountered during the flight test program were improved by minor alterations of the control system. The variability designed into the control system contributed significantly to the research program by providing different aerodynamic configurations for data analysis and in allowing improvements in flight characteristics.

Book Flight Test Handling Qualities of the X 24A Lifting Body

Download or read book Flight Test Handling Qualities of the X 24A Lifting Body written by Robert G. Hoey and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The handling qualities of the X-24A were determined through a combination of qualitative pilot comments, numerical pilot ratings, and direct and indirect analyses of recorded flight test data. A fixed base six-degree-of-freedom simulator was used extensively to evaluate predicted handling characteristics and to establish trends which were confirmed in flight. The handling characteristics of the X-24A during an approach and landing in still air were excellent. The transonic handling qualities were adequate for a research mission, but precise control was extremely difficult due to an inherent lateral pilot-induced-oscillation tendency and continual small disturbances in the longitudinal and lateral axes. At supersonic speeds the handling qualities were excellent. The rocket engine exhaust plume influenced the handling qualities by producing a longitudinal trim change at transonic conditions and a reduction in directional stability at supersonic conditions. A limited amount of quantitative handling qualities data from X-24A tests were compared with criteria from a proposed specification for lifting reentry vehicles. In most cases the X-24A met the proposed specification. Several of the test maneuvers in the specification were impractical for a vehicle of this type. Some handling qualities deficiencies which were uncovered during the test program were not identifiable by application of the proposed specification.
