Book excerpt: From participatory architecture to interaction design, the question of how design accommodates use is driving inquiry in many creative fields. Expanding utility to embrace people’s everyday experience brings new promises for the social role of design. But this is nothing new. As the essays assembled in this collection show, interest in the elusive realm of the user was an essential part of architecture and design throughout the twentieth century. Use Matters is the first to assemble this alternative history, from the bathroom to the city, from ergonomics to cybernetics, and from Algeria to East Germany. It argues that the user is not a universal but a historically constructed category of twentieth-century modernity that continues to inform architectural practice and thinking in often unacknowledged ways.

Book excerpt: "2001 marks the beginning of the International Building Exhibition (IBE) Rotterdam-Hoogvliet with the theme WiMBY! - Welcome into My Backyard!" "One of the biggest obstacles for contemporary urban planning and the urban environment is the NiMBY phenomenon - Not in My Backyard. This represents the personal fear of the urbanite for the implications of collectivism, for everything that is unusual or new. It also refers to the fear and unwillingness of large institutions, companies and governmental organizations to share their knowledge and coordinate their agendas in communal projects." "WiMBY! (Welcome into My Backyard!) is the motto for a new design and organizational culture in which complexity is deliberately confronted in order to discover and apply innovative and pioneering possibilities. It also signifies the application of an urban ethic in which the changes that overcome the urban dweller are seen as potential sources of enrichment for the resident of the collective city." "The objective of IBE Rotterdam-Hoogvliet, set to continue through 2010, is to heighten the profile of Rotterdam's urban planning and architecture and make a decision contribution to the repositioning of Hoogvliet as a sustainable and attractive place to live and work." "WiMBY! is first and foremost a voyage of discovery into the potential of all the New Towns, satellite towns, Trabantstadte, Garden Cities, Villes Nouvelles and other growth epicentres that were built in the twentieth century."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Radical Post Modernism

Download or read book Radical Post Modernism written by Charles Jencks and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-10-17 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this latest issue of Architectural Design the guest editors are drawn, like the content, from contrasting tastes and generations. Charles Jencks, the definer of Post-Modernism for thirty years, discusses some issues that have re-emerged today, while the young group of British architects, FAT, argues for a particular version of RPM. An interview between Rem Koohaas and Charles Jencks discusses the influence of Post-Modernism while investigations of street art, graffiti and the 1980 Venice Biennale show that communication is at the heart of this radical strain of architecture. This issue brings together an unlikely and exciting pairing of guest-editors: internationally acclaimed critic Charles Jencks, whose name became synonymous with Post-modernism in the 80s, and the dynamic architectural group, FAT. Features work by: ARM, Atelier Bow Wow, Édouard François, FOA, Rem Koolhaas, John and Valerio Olgiati.

Architects with particularly advanced approaches to the question of ornament contribute reports and reflections on their experiences: Sam Jacob of Fashion Architecture Taste (FAT), London; Andreas Hild of Hild und K Architekten, Munich; and Alejandro Zaera-Polo of Foreign Office Architects (FOA), London.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Van der Graaf researches the emotional ties of residents to their deprived neighbourhood. In transforming deprived areas into great places to live much attention has been given to the physical, social and economical aspects of deprivation. However, little is known about the relationship between deprivation and emotional ties: What makes residents in deprived areas feel at home in their neighbourhood? In this PhD thesis Peter van der Graaf focused on the emotional ties of residents to their neighbourhood and researched how these ties are affected by urban renewal. He also compares practices between the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, where the emotions of residents are considered more in urban renewal.

Book Why Architects Matter

Download or read book Why Architects Matter written by Flora Samuel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Architects Matter examines the key role of research- led, ethical architects in promoting wellbeing, sustainability and innovation. It argues that the profession needs to be clear about what it knows and the value of what it knows if it is to work successfully with others. Without this clarity, the marginalization of architects from the production of the built environment will continue, preventing clients, businesses and society from getting the buildings that they need. The book offers a strategy for the development of a twenty-first-century knowledge-led built environment, including tools to help evidence, develop and communicate that value to those outside the field. Knowing how to demonstrate the impact and value of their work will strengthen practitioners’ ability to pitch for work and access new funding streams. This is particularly important at a time of global economic downturn, with ever greater competition for contracts and funds driving down fees and making it imperative to prove value at every level. Why Architects Matter straddles the spheres of ‘Practice Management and Law’, ‘History and Theory’, ‘Design’, ‘Housing’, ‘Sustainability’, ‘Health’, ‘Marketing’ and ‘Advice for Clients’, bringing them into an accessible whole. The book will therefore be of interest to professional architects, architecture students and anyone with an interest in our built environment and the role of professionals within it.

Book Housing and Belonging in Latin America

Download or read book Housing and Belonging in Latin America written by Christien Klaufus and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intricacies of living in contemporary Latin American cities include cases of both empowerment and restriction. In Lima, residents built their own homes and formed community organizations, while in Rio de Janeiro inhabitants of the favelas needed to be “pacified” in anticipation of international sporting events. Aspirations to “get ahead in life” abound in the region, but so do multiple limitations to realizing the dream of upward mobility. This volume captures the paradoxical histories and experiences of urban life in Latin America, offering new empirical and theoretical insights to scholars.
