Book excerpt: Located in Westmore, Vermont, Willoughby Lake was carved out by a glacier; the latest findings state it is 357 feet deep at its greatest depth, about 5.5 miles long, and 1 mile wide. Mount Hor and Mount Pisgah tower above its tranquil beauty. During Prohibition, Mount Hor was the site of a secret cave harboring a still, accessible only by boat or on foot. The mysterious Arcadia Retreat was built in a very remote area not easily accessible and was left vacant for many years before burning in 1923. Sentinel Rock is situated on a hill high above Westmore with a tremendous view of the lake and valley below. It has been owned by a few different families over the years--most recently the Wright family, who donated the area to the State of Vermont as a park, so that everyone could enjoy the area. Today, visitors enjoy peaceful canoe rides while others brave the icy cold waters as they run into the frigid lake to raise money for various causes.

Book Under a Blue Moon

Download or read book Under a Blue Moon written by Isabella S. Oehry and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this extraordinary adventure, spiked with humor and insight, Isa Oehry documents a journey that began innocently under the golden light of a full moon. Mysteriously nourished, enriched, and highly energized by an unknown force under nothing but a moon surrounded by thousands of stars, she felt a prompting, inviting her to a destination yet unknown, to a hidden world concealing ancient wisdom. She spontaneously decided to set out to find it. Her search led her into a world where people, according to the laws of science, have no right to be alive. Her eyes were opened to previously unknown and what at first sight appear as unbelievable truths. Understandings about this earth, its people, animals and plants—the entire universe—suddenly no longer applied. Although it was Isa Oehry who was the one to walk this extraordinary journey and experience the adventures, the insights are meant for all of us. This true story inspires us to look beyond the obvious, and keep our minds and hearts open for the unseen and previously unheard. It forever changes how we view the world we live in.

  • Pages : 171 pages

Book excerpt: The Willoughby Chronicles is a collection of short nonfiction stories that form a mosaic of the author's lovably bizarre family in the 1960s and 1970s. From being put on a ledge as an infant (saved by the instincts of his lizard brain), to being left at the circus intentionally, to digging a real life Hobbit-hole, to a brother who (surprisingly) turned out not to be the Unabomber, to a thing that happened with a puppy and his mother that the author would rather not talk about, to the final horrific event that put everything in perspective, The Willoughby Chronicles combines hilarity with heart and grace to bring a family--and a time--to life.

Book Forgotten Tales of Vermont

Download or read book Forgotten Tales of Vermont written by William M. Alexander and published by Forgotten Tales. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's more to Vermont than maple syrup and covered bridges. A book about Vermont's history will likely bring to mind such topics as Abenaki Indians, the Green Mountain Boys and the state's famed covered bridges, but Forgotten Tales of Vermont takes readers far beyond traditional histories to uncover little-known stories from Vermont's quirky past. Who knew that students from Castleton Medical School moonlighted as grave robbers until they were caught hiding Mrs. Churchill's head in a haystack? Or that an Egyptian mummy once turned up in Middlebury and is now buried at the local cemetery alongside the town's founders? Stories such as the Willoughby Lake "monster" and "Slipperyskin," the bear that terrorized Lemington, are sure to bemuse, baffle and surprise even Vermonters who think they've heard it all. Culled from newspapers, books and journals, William M. Alexander's fascinating tales will entertain and inform readers for generations to come!
