Download or read book William Wetmore Story and His Friends Vol 1 written by Henry James and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Wetmore Story and His Friends, Vol. 1: From Letters, Diaries, and Recollections There came a moment when the spell in question began to weaken, and in that subtle revolution our subject, could we fully give our selves to it, would find its dramatic climax. Its limit is marked, in our own direction, its modern side, by two or three such pregnant transitions. They accord with many other things that repre sent the inevitable quickening of the pace. I think of the American who started on his Wom derjahre after the Civil War quite as one of the moderns divided by a chasm from his progenitors and elder brothers, carried on the wave as they were not, and all supplied with introductions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Wetmore Story and His Friends, Vol. 1 of 2: From Letters, Diaries, and Recollections It may appear a new application of the truth that honour, where honour, as to any frank advance, attaches, is especially due to the light skirmishers, the eclaireurs, who have gone before ; yet there are occasions on which it comes home to us that, so far as we are contentedly cosmopolite to-day and move about in a world that has been made for us both larger and more amusing, we owe much of our extension and diversion to those comparatively few who, amid difficulties and dangers, set the example and made out the road. Book Lives of Victorian Literary Figures Part III Volume 1

Download or read book Lives of Victorian Literary Figures Part III Volume 1 written by Valerie Sanders and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-17 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Gaskell, like her contemporary Emily Bronte, was from the north of England, though based in Lancashire and Cheshire rather than Yorkshire. Her first novel, Mary Barton (1848) was set in the north and was unusually realistic in its depiction of Manchester working-class life. Ruskin grew up in suburban London; in later life, he settled in the Lake District . Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle moved in the opposite direction - from rural Scotland to London's Cheyne Walk. This title focuses on writers for whom 'the centre' was a pressing concern. The three volumes that comprise a set are facsimile reproductions of contemporary biographical material. They include letters, memoirs, poems and articles on three outstanding Victorian literary persons: John Ruskin, Elzabeth Gaskell and the Carlyles.

Book excerpt: In the eyes of posterity, ancient Rome is deeply flawed. The list of censures is long and varied, from political corruption and the practice of slavery, to religious intolerance and sexual immorality, yet for centuries the Romans' "errors" have not only provoked opprobrium, but also inspired wayward and novel forms of thought and representation, themselves errant in the broad sense of the Latin verb. This volume is the first to examine this phenomenon in depth, treating examples from history, philosophy, literature, psychoanalysis, and art history, from antiquity to the present, to examine how the Romans' faults have become the basis for creative experimentation, for rejections of prevailing ideology, even for comedy and delight. In demonstrating that the reception of Rome's missteps and mistakes has been far more complex than simply denouncing them as an exemplum malum to be shunned and avoided, it argues compellingly that these "alternative" receptions are historically important and enduringly relevant in their own right. "Roman error" comes to signify both ancient misstep and something that we may commit when engaging with Roman antiquity, whereby reception may even be conceived as "error" of a kind: while the volume ably addresses popular fascination with a wide range of Roman vices, including violence, imperial domination, and decadence, it also asks us to consider what makes certain receptions matter, how they matter, and why.
