Book William The Friesian

Download or read book William The Friesian written by Diane Wentzel and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was created to give children the opportunity to learn about Friesian horses. There are only approximately five thousand pure Friesians in the United States. The breed was so diluted at a certain time, that the pure breed was almost extinct. The Friesian Registry declared that no other breed could be crossed with a Friesian in order to revive the breed and keep it pure. The author purchased William ten years ago because he was the perfect example of what a Friesian should be. Because the breed is not common, and are quite costly, they are not widely known. She wanted to introduce William as the main character of the book so that others could learn how beautiful and special he was. William has spent his life as the perfect companion to the author and she wanted to share her love for him in this book.

Book William III the Stadholder King

Download or read book William III the Stadholder King written by Wout Troost and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Britain the name of William III is synonymous with sectarianism and Orangism. Ever since he burst onto the English political landscape in 1688 to take the throne of his catholic uncle, James II, William has tended to be viewed within a largely domestic sphere. Yet, it has been acknowledged that William's main motivation in accepting the English crown was to aid the ongoing struggles of the United Provinces against the might of Louis XIV's France. Whilst both the British and European aspects of William's activities have been studied before, there has until now been no English language book that draws together both his Dutch and British concerns. In this book, made available in English for the first time, Wout Troost exploits his detailed knowledge of Dutch, English, Scottish and Irish sources to paint a holistic and convincing political analysis of William's reign. Beginning with a brief biography of William, the real strength of this book lies in its analysis of the first part of William's reign before the events of 1688. It is this crucial period that has been most neglected by English-speaking historians, despite the fact that it is crucial to understanding the events that follow. For without an appreciation of William's formative years as Stadholder and soldier, his actions and decisions relating to the English crown cannot be properly construed. Providing a truly balanced insight into the political career of William, this book will be welcomed by all those with in interest in European history, or who wish to better understand the political and religious geography of modern Britain. The translation of this book was made possible by a generous subsidy from NWO, the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek.

Book The Myth of William Osler

Download or read book The Myth of William Osler written by Patrick Fiddes and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Myth of William Osler presents a radical re-examination of the philosophies and practices of a renowned American medical hero. It challenges widely-accepted beliefs about Osler which, while unsettling to many readers, brings to light interpretations and approaches which have disrespected Osler’s expressed wishes, exaggerated his achievements and dishonoured his memory. The Myth questions the originality of both Osler’s teaching philosophies and his educational legacies, and the credit he received for educational innovations that were not his. It examines Osler’s disregard of contemporary advances occurring in moral philosophy and medical ethics, his uncertain values and his documented unethical practices. The Myth argues that Osler’s immutable habit, his proclaimed Way, reflected a lifelong application to each task that, in the end, became his defining flaw. While William Osler’s reputation as a learned medical historian is not contested, The Myth attests that even here, his interpretations of medicine’s history were highly selective, often constructed to support a view predicated on Ancient Greek, Renaissance European and English medical philosophies and practices. Osler’s teaching—as revered as it was—centred on the ancient tradition of the Hippocratic art of observation while remaining largely untouched by the emerging importance of the patient’s history that was being pursued by more unbiased and innovative others. William Osler’s legacy will stand but with a greater complexity than has been previously appreciated.
