Sherman As a soldier of the Union, General Sherman, by common consent, stands second only in a galaxy of great commanders such as no single cycle in the annals of time can parallel. This is the verdict of the most superficial reader and of the most diligent student of history. A reference to the official list of battles, skirmishes, and other contests, from April 15, 1861, to the close of the war, develops the astounding fact that for every day, including Sundays, of those four years there were at least three of these struggles. If in such a death grapple General Sherman rose to the highest rank among the victors, it cannot but be interesting to turn back to the circumstances of his parentage and scan the surroundings of his youth to find, if we can, the formative influences which moulded the plastic tendencies of his nature into the lofty and harmonious individuality which marked him out for eminent leadership. Both his father and grandfather had been learned in the law. His father not only mastered the intricacies of Coke and Littleton, but made himself familiar with whatever was worthy of reading outside of the books of the law, and was therefore fitted to shine in the domain of general literature as well as in the realm of technical jurisprudence. It was this gifted man who, when his third son was born, proposed to bestow upon him the name of a celebrated chieftain - as if seeing the child's future military career. Judge Sherman entertained a warm admiration for the celebrated Indian chief Tecumseh. This singular Indian was gifted with rare endowments, which gave him great prominence amongst his tribal allies, and a commanding influence over his followers of the forest. Nature had made him a soldier, and he was a statesman by intuition. Farseeing in plan, wary to win, sagacious to combine, and inflexible to execute, these qualities made him a formidable leader and also a dangerous opponent. He was not habitually ruthless or cruel in his warfare; on the contrary, many acts of mercy, of generous chivalric protection, are recorded of him that would grace the annals of the knight errantry of old. On the death of his father he is adopted by Senator Thomas Ewing. 1836 - June 12, reaches West Point, where he enters the military academy as a cadet from Ohio, his appointment dating from July 1. His classmates include George H. Thomas. 1840 - June, graduates from West Point, sixth in his class. Commissioned a second lieutenant in the Third Artillery, July 1. He is afterward stationed in Florida. 1841 - November 30, commissioned a first lieutenant. 1842 - June, ordered to Fort Moultrie, in Charleston harbor, where he is stationed for four years. 1846 - July 14, embarks with United States troops for service in California. Arrives in Monterey the following January, and does duty as an acting adjutant-general, etc. 1850 - May 1, marries, in Washington, D. C., Miss Ellen Boyle Ewing, daughter of his benefactor, Thomas Ewing. September 27, commissioned a captain in the Commissary Department and is afterward stationed in St. Louis and New Orleans. He had already been brevetted a captain for gallant and meritorious services in California, to date from May 30, 1848. 1853 - September 6, resigns from the army and enters into the banking business in San Francisco. He subsequently relinquishes banking and makes an unsuccessful attempt at law. His career at this point seems very unpromising. 1859 - July, receives notice that he has been elected superintendent of a new military school in Louisiana. It is a day of sacred and tender memories, and it calls us to the fulfillment of a duty which we owe to the dead. Others may forget them, but we cannot, and be true to our better selves. We are carried back to the time when we marched with them to the throb of the drum, and waked with them at the bugles call. Over us was the flag, red as the wrath of a great people in the hour of their just anger, and the thunderous sound of battle smote our ears. Again we see the faces of our comrades bright with smiles, around the camp fire; or shadowed with pensive thought as they look far away over hill tops and valleys, to the dear homes they had left behind; or transfigured in the fierce light of battle; or pale in death, when the bloody strife was over. They shared our trials, they cheered us on our way with their brave words, they died that we might live. We caught their last whispered words of love, and sent their last messages to those who were waiting in agony of suspense, for tidings from the camp or battle field. He had a vigorous and penetrating intellect, prompt and clear in comprehension and in decision. While steadfast in his opinions, he was subordinate in conduct; he held to his judgment in issue against President Lincoln, but yielded as unquestioning obedience to Mc-Clernand as to Grant. He was an omnivorous reader, and was a storehouse of felicitous anecdote. His cheerful disposition and inexhaustible fund of conversation made him always a delightful companion. Frank as a child and outspoken in his likes and dislikes, Sherman was often engaged in controversy. The war filled only a few years of his life, but comprised most of his activity and achievements. Accordingly, his biography naturally groups itself into these parts - before, during, and after the war, and so it is written, in the following pages. The effort in this narrative has been to give in the simplest form a statement of the facts without comment. The completion of the publication of the First Series of the War Records gives opportunity for a fair approximation to a correct statement.
