Book The Oxford Shakespeare Love s Labour s Lost

Download or read book The Oxford Shakespeare Love s Labour s Lost written by William Shakespeare and published by Oxford Paperbacks. This book was released on 2008-07-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sparkling repartee between the fair visitors from France and their hosts in Navarre, whose vow to study out of sight of woman is quickly broken, makes Love's Labour's Lost one of the most delightful and stageworthy of Shakespeare's comedies. This edition offers a number of new readings of difficult and disputed passages, together with some suggestions about the way in which the play's notorious `tangles' may have come about. The text is based on the quarto of 1598 and takes full account of the extensive scholarly study which that text has received over recent years. It offers a fascinating insight into shakespeare's mode of composition, improvisation, and revision.

Book excerpt: LOVES LABOURS LOSTA most excellent reason exists for Kenneth Branagh making the decision to turn William Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost into a musical comedy when he adapted it for the screen. (Although critics and the dozen or so people who actually paid to get into a theater to watch it may disagree.) Even without Branagh's transformation of the play into a 1930s Hollywood-style musical, Love's Labour's Lost could quite accurately be termed the Bard's attempt at writing a Broadway-style musical comedy since a faithful presentation of the intact play with no cuts produces more singing than any other of his plays. That being said, it is worth pointing out that Branagh's filmed version of Love's Labour's Lost released in 2000 was the first feature film version of the play and not only was the setting updated by several centuries, but roughly two-thirds of the text was cut and additional characters not found in the original. While the film was a flop, that failure is not likely placed on those changes since perhaps more than any Shakespeare play, Love's Labour's Lost seems to be directed toward the specific aesthetic characteristics of Elizabethan courtiers. Very few people then, now or ever have any real ability to relate to the aesthetic demands of those attending Renaissance court. As a result, this very early effort by Shakespeare--perhaps his first attempt at a comedy--has never been particularly popular once production of Shakespeare's plays moved outside the environs of the aristocracy and into the theater of the people from the Globe to the Cineplex.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love's Labour's Lost was one of Shakespeare's early comedies. It tells the story of the King of Navarre and his three companions (Lords Berowne, Dumaine, and Longaville) who, in an attempt to spend three years studying and fasting, decide to avoid the company of women. This is all thwarted however with the arrival of the Princess of France and her court ladies. Setting up camp outside the court (due to the King having imposed a ban on women inside), the Princess and her companions stir feelings of love in the men. The play is notable for the inclusion of the longest word in all of Shakespeare's plays: honorificabilitudinitatibus. One of the main themes of Love's Labour's Lost, is that of masculine desire, which throughout the play is deferred and confused. The earliest recorded performance of this play was in 1597, before Queen Elizabeth.

Book excerpt: Love's Labour's Lost is one of William Shakespeare's early comedies, believed to have been written in the mid-1590s for a performance at the Inns of Court before Queen Elizabeth I. It follows the King of Navarre and his three companions as they attempt to forswear the company of women for three years of study and fasting, and their subsequent infatuation with the Princess of Aquitaine and her ladies. In an untraditional ending for a comedy, the play closes with the death of the Princess's father, and all weddings are delayed for a year. The play draws on themes of masculine love and desire, reckoning and rationalization, and reality versus fantasy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To begin the introduction, the editor discusses the link between Love's Labour's Lost and the writings of Sir Philip Sidney, the simple plot and its inconclusive ending, the relationship in the play between words and the things which they signify, and the play's concern with the court. The following sections of the introduction examine the play's style, from the structural devices and wordplay typical of Shakespeare to the repetition and allusion that are particularly abundant in this comedy; and the play's structure, with focus on the play's last scene, which is the longest in Shakespeare's work. The editor finally addresses the play's dating and possible sources, its early history and performance, and the subsequent reactions to and criticism of the play. This edition features five appendices that follow the text of Love's Labour's Lost. They include an examination of the play's original texts, additional lines omitted in the text of this edition, and discussions of Moth's name, rhymes, and compound words in the play. Also included are a preface, an index, and lists of illustrations, abbreviations, and references. The Arden Shakespeare has developed a reputation as the pre-eminent critical edition of Shakespeare for its exceptional scholarship, reflected in the thoroughness of each volume. An introduction comprehensively contextualizes the play, chronicling the history and culture that surrounded and influenced Shakespeare at the time of its writing and performance, and closely surveying critical approaches to the work. Detailed appendices address problems like dating and casting, and analyze the differing Quarto and Folio sources. A full commentary by one or more of the play's foremost contemporary scholars illuminates the text, glossing unfamiliar terms and drawing from an abundance of research and expertise to explain allusions and significant background information. Highly informative and accessible, Arden offers the fullest experience of Shakespeare available to a reader.
