Taking just three common examples, typical astrological charts show the positions and relations of the planets at the moment and location of birth. Progressed astrology maps the return of planets to their birth positions as well as the times and ways they cross and relate to those original positions and to one another. And horary astrology looks at the positions of the planets in the zodiac at a given moment when some decision is to be made (e.g., when to lay the foundation stone of a temple). And then there is the astrology once commonly found in newspapers, where planets were taken in conjunction with the signs of the zodiac to give general indications of what to expect for the day, given one's birth sign. This latter was never taken seriously by knowledgeable astrologers, being rather like the sentiments found in fortune cookies ending meals in Chinese restaurants. "People admire your attitude," for example, can apply to anyone's self-image, and so it "works." But such messages are random, and the newspaper's astrological messages each have to be general enough to cover about 1/12 the population, because there are 12 signs in the zodiac. There is much more to any system of astrology than the mechanisms for casting a chart or giving naïve interpretations, as, for example, Mars means conflict, Jupiter wealth or generosity, Mercury intelligence, and so on. Like all sciences, astrology is a complex of symbols and principles of interrelationships. And like all science, astrology is also based on experience and observation. In some ways, astrology is more like medical science than physics, since its variables are often multivalent and context-dependent. And like all sciences, astrology is based on assumptions about the nature of reality and the universe. It shares with all sciences the assumption that there are discoverable laws of nature that are invariant, at least over long periods of time. It shares the assumption that nature and the universe is intelligible to a reasoning, observing consciousness.

Psychic powers are far more subtle intoxicants than the gross physical energies. Despite of the name, clairvoyant vision is nothing but clear. Inactivity of the physical body does not indicate a condition of inactivity. For the uninitiated, “sitting for yoga” is invariably fatal. It encourages mental passivity which, in turn, aids the development of mediumistic states where one can readily fall prey to the caprice and malice of mischievous embryos of human beings. All yoga practices have disastrous results unless guided by a competent teacher. A Master of Wisdom advises concentration upon the Higher Self within the Heart: Place your love, trust, and confidence in your heart, and retire there when the battle grows fierce. Practise the habit of careful and constant concentration of mind upon every duty and act in life, and one day you might be able to kindle the Sacred Fire. But unless you are capable of unremitting devotion to truth and virtue, and of guarding Self against self, you are more likely to lose your way in the shadows than to see any real light or gain insight. Those who wallow in the mire of exotericism know not what it is to live in the world and yet be not of the world. Beware, O Lanoo! Read Nature’s Finer Forces. There are no extant works on effective and safe practice and those purporting to be are full of blinds. Which of the Two Paths wilt thou choose, O Lanoo?

Is the desire to live selfish? The only difference between an ordinary man, who works along with Nature during the course of cosmic evolution, and an Occultist, is that the latter, by his superior knowledge, adopts such methods of training and discipline as to quicken the process of his evolution, and thus ascend in a comparatively short period of time to that apex of physical and spiritual perfection (a god on earth) towards which the ordinary man may take billions of years to reach. Beyond the Hall of Learning is the Great White Lodge, the magnificent hierarchy of Masters, Gurus and Chelas all over the world. Every aspirant to chelaship has a Guru, although he many not be aware of it. Guru is the chela’s benefactor. If we have reverenced our teacher, we will now revere our unknown Guru. We must place our hand in his hand with all love, and trust, and confidence, for it is to mighty Karma we have appealed, and the Guru is an agent of Karma. The faith and love between Guru and chela act as a stimulus to both, and as a purifier to the mind of the chela. The business of the Guru is to keep adjusting the chela’s progress, and not to submerge him with knowledge, or push him forward. The Guru–chela affinity is sacred and precious, not lightly taken up or lightly dropped.
