Book The most creative bit of glass work in the city The art and conservation of Bruce Porter s St Christopher window

Download or read book The most creative bit of glass work in the city The art and conservation of Bruce Porter s St Christopher window written by Douglas Stinson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book weaves a web with strands that connect a favorite saint, an American revolution in stained glass design, a west-coast cultural renaissance, and a now obscure Swedish scientist and theologian. With beautiful photographs and prose, it brings to life the art and science of art conservation as dedicated people of various talents and interests struggle to preserve a cherished part of America's cultural heritage. --------------- Just as Porter cut glass and shaped lead when he first created his legendary stained glass, Douglas Stinson and Ariana Makau have fashioned and formed an artistic story of its restoration more than a century later. Revealing the modern techniques of restitution craftsmanship against the backdrop of significant San Francisco history, this book is its own work of art." James Lawrence, Assistant Professor of Spirituality, Graduate Theological Union and Dean of the Swedenborgian House of Studies.

This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preservation and Repair of Historic Stained and Leaded Glass Despite many failed starts, the War of 1812, and British competition, American glass production increased steadily throughout the 19th century. Stained glass was available on a very limited basis in America during the first quarter of the 19th century, but American stained glass did not really emerge in its own right until the The windows at St. Ann and the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, New York, made by John and William Jay Bolton between 1843 and 1848, are perhaps the most significant early American stained glass installation (fig. Other important early stained glass commissions were the glass ceilings produced by the]. G. H. Gibson Company of Philadelphia for the House and Senate chambers of the United States Capitol in 1859. America's glass industry boomed during the second half of the 19th century. (and although stained and leaded glass is found nationwide, the manufacturing was based in the Northeast and Midwest, where good natural ingredients for glass, and coal reserves for the kilns were available. Moreover, nearly all of the nationally renowned studios were based in major metropolitan areas of the central and northeastern states - near the manufacturers that supplied their raw materials.) In response to this growth, the industry formed self-regulating associations that established guidelines for business and production. In 1879 the Window Glass Association of America was established, and in 1903 The National Ornamental Glass Manufacturers' Association, precursor of the Stained Glass Association in America, was formed. The 60 years from about 1870 to 1930 were the high point for stained glass in the us. In the early years, American stylistic demands reflected those current in Europe, including various historic revivals, and aesthetic and geometric patterns. American patterns prevailed thereafter; they tended to be more Vivid, brash, and bold (fig. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stained glass has long been a part of domestic architecture, but in the late 1800s its popularity soared. In part, this was due to new manufacturing techniques and distribution networks, but also it caught the imagination of Victorian, Art Nouveau, and Arts and Crafts designers around the world. Here over 350 examples of architectural stained glass span several countries and many years. The styles range from Victorian intricacy to the geometry of the Prairie School. This second edition includes etched glass and beveled constructions, in addition to leaded windows. Each piece is illustrated in color, with dimensions and current market values. Today, stained glass, both old and new, is again finding its way into the home. It makes a delightful accent in a transom or a glorious complete wall. This book will help readers understand and appreciate many varieties of old stained glass, and will inspire new work by artists.

Book American Glass

Download or read book American Glass written by John Stuart Gordon and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Glass can be decorative or utilitarian, and its forms often reflect technological innovations and social change. Drawing on an insightful selection from the Yale University Art Gallery and other collections at Yale, American Glass illuminates the vital and often intimate roles that glass has played in the nation's art and culture. Spectacularly illustrated, the publication showcases eighteenth-century mold-blown vessels, nineteenth-century pressed glass, innovative studio work, and luminous stained-glass windows by John La Farge and Louis Comfort Tiffany, the latter reproduced as a lush gatefold. These are considered alongside beguiling objects that broaden our expectations of glass and speak to the centrality of the medium in American life, including one of the oldest complex microscopes in the United States, an early Edison light bulb, glass-plate photography, jewelry, and more. With an essay on the history of collecting American glass and discussions of each object that present new scholarship, this engaging book tells the long and rich history of glass in America--from prehistoric minerals to contemporary sculptures"--Dust jacket front flap.
