Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aneurin Bevan is a revered figure in Welsh and British politics, celebrated for his role as the founder of one of the country’s most cherished institutions, the National Health Service. As a result, Bevan is continuously invoked, quoted widely, and is praised for his principles. However, Bevan was not only a significant politician. He was also a prolific writer, contributing extensively to the socialist magazine Tribune from its founding in 1937 until his death in 1960. This is My Truth represents the first edited collection of these writings. Beginning with an introduction that charts Bevan’s writing career and emphasises Bevan’s legacy, the collection showcases Bevan’s analysis of class conflict, capitalism, democracy, the world and democratic socialism. This is My Truth provides readers with the opportunity to read Bevan in his own words and to reflect on a figure who remains a source of inspiration and controversy today.

Book Prostestant Traditions and the Soul of Europe

Download or read book Prostestant Traditions and the Soul of Europe written by Gijsbert van den Brink and published by Evangelische Verlagsanstalt. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What binds contemporary Europeans together in terms of cultural values that go beyond a common interest in economic growth? In a time of resurging nationalist movements all over Europe, the need for what former President of the European Commission Jacques Delors called a "soul for Europe" has become more urgent than ever. In this volume, Delors's 25 years old appeal to the churches is taken seriously. In particular, contributions to a common sense of belonging that have been made by the traditions of European Protestantism are carefully investigated. In nineteen case studies, topics and areas as varied as theological identity, religious tolerance, political philosophy, ethics, the arts, the scientific mentality, and the economy are covered. It appears that despite the rise of religious pluralism throughout Europe, aspects of the Protestant ethos continue to be key to societal cohesion in many places.

Download or read book Does the Soul Survive written by Elie Kaplan Spitz and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2012-12-14 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Near-death experiences? Past-life regression? Reincarnation? Are these sorts of things Jewish? With a blend of candor, personal questioning, and sharp-eyed scholarship, Rabbi Elie Kaplan Spitz relates his own observations and the firsthand accounts shared with him by others, experiences that helped propel his journey from skeptic to believer that there is life after life. From near-death experiences to reincarnation, past-life memory to the work of mediums, Rabbi Spitz explores what we are really able to know about the afterlife, and draws on Jewish texts to share that belief in these concepts—so often approached with reluctance—is in fact true to Jewish tradition. “The increasing interest and faith in survival of the soul may grow into a cultural wave that is as potentially transformative for society as the civil rights movement and feminism. A renewed faith in ‘the soul’s journeys’ will call for a reassessment of our priorities, and will enable traditional religions to renew and transform their adherents.” —from the Introduction

Book The Beginnings of European Theorizing reflexivity in the Archaic Age

Download or read book The Beginnings of European Theorizing reflexivity in the Archaic Age written by Barry Sandywell and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the cultural practices of early Greek society construct the self? How does the self appear in the earliest forms of Greek poetry and literature? What are the relationships between the art of the Archaic age and the emergence of autonomous political and theoretical institutions? How did these practices of self-reflection shape the emergence of later forms of theorizing, science and philosophy? In Reflexivity and the Crisis of Western Reason, Barry Sandywell outlined and defended a central place for reflexivity in the human sciences. In this second equally outstanding and challenging volume of Logological Investigations, he reconstructs the origins of European reflection. The author's central claim is that the world does not exist independently of human practices, but that it is constituted through the terms of our discursive categories. Rather than research being a triumphant exploration, it is more fully understood as agonized self-reflection on the grounds of knowledge production. Sandywell argues that this approach has been inherent throughout Western philosophy and in so doing, he shows that the reflexive character of human experience in Western culture can be traced through the desire for intelligibility that animated Greek drama, poetry, philosophy, and science as explorations of the cosmos, body-politic, and the soul.

Book The Spiritual Origins of Eastern Europe and the Future Mysteries of the Holy Grail

Download or read book The Spiritual Origins of Eastern Europe and the Future Mysteries of the Holy Grail written by Sergei O. Prokofieff and published by Temple Lodge Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "And however paradoxical it may seem today, the 'Grail mood' is in the fullest sense to be found in Russia. And the future role that Russia will play in the sixth post-Atlantean epoch, a task of which I have so often had to speak, rests firmly upon this unconquerable 'Grail mood' in the Russian people." --Rudolf Steiner (Nov. 3, 1918) Although Eastern Europe has been part of Christian humanity for more than a thousand years, its task and spiritual identity remain a mystery, the answer to which cannot be found unless we look behind outer historical events to the spiritual, meta-historical dimensions of history. This momentous work, breathtaking in its scope and detail, represents just such a penetrating, esoteric study of Eastern Europe in the light of Rudolf Steiner's spiritual research. Prokofieff shows how, from the earliest times, the future "conscience of humanity" flowed from hidden mystery centers in Hibernia to the eastern Slavic peoples. As a result, qualities of "compassion, patience, and willingness for sacrifice" developed in their souls, creating a truly Christian "Grail mood." Despite incalculable suffering--from the persecutions by the Mogul hordes of the thirteenth century to the Bolshevik experiment of the twentieth century--this quality has become an unconquerable force in the depths of their being. In illuminating the maya of outer history, Prokofieff reveals the forces that have been at work to hinder the progress and future intentions of humankind. Those adversarial forces have created a "karma of materialism" that the eastern Slavic peoples have taken upon themselves out of their exalted willingness for sacrifice. Will we be able to use the present opportunity granted by this sacrifice to fulfill the primary purposes of the present cultural epoch? Serious study of this book--intended for students of spiritual science--can lead to a profound awakening to the challenges that face humankind today.
