Book Introduction to Prescribed Fire in Southern Ecosystems

Download or read book Introduction to Prescribed Fire in Southern Ecosystems written by Thomas A. Waldrop and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prescribed burning is an important tool throughout Southern forests, grasslands, and croplands. The need to control fire became evident to allow forests to regenerate. This manual is intended to help resource managers to plan and execute prescribed burns in Southern forests and grasslands. A new appreciation and interest has developed in recent years for using prescribed fire in grasslands, especially hardwood forests, and on steep mountain slopes. Proper planning and execution of prescribed fires are necessary to reduce detrimental effects, such as the impacts on air and downstream water quality. Book excerpt: Fire is a defining element in Canadian land and life. With few exceptions, Canada's forests and prairies have evolved with fire. Its peoples have exploited fire and sought to protect themselves from its excesses, and since Confederation, the country has devised various institutions to connect fire and society. The choices Canadians have made says a great deal about their national character. Awful Splendour narrates the history of this grand saga. It will interest geographers, historians, and members of the fire community.

Book Prescribed Burning Workshop

Download or read book Prescribed Burning Workshop written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many areas of Ontario, partial cutting and clearcut systems have not resulted in adequate natural or artificial regeneration of trees without management of competing vegetation. New policy directions and cost considerations are prompting resource managers to consider greater use of prescribed fire technology as an alternative to mechanical or chemical methods for the management of pine and tolerant hardwood groups. This document summarizes presentations at a workshop held to provide a forum for exchanging knowledge and experience on the operational, administrative, and biological aspects of applying prescribed fire in central Ontario. Topics presented include fire ecology concepts, impact of fire on wildlife, the use of fire in management of birch, oak, and pine, cost estimation, and fire management.
