Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of traditional music for the mountain dulcimer seeks to reunite this beautiful instrument with the people, the music, and the world from which it came. It tells the story of the Wilderness Road, a trail through the Appalachian Mountains from Gate City, Virginia, to Fort Boonesboro, Kentucky, blazed by Daniel Boone, and links it to the history and heritage of the mountain dulcimer. Numerous photographs and maps help tell the story, and each tune in the book includes a historical anecdote describing its origin. This book is a must for anyone interested in the history of the Appalachian Mountain region and its music. the sixteen tunes in this book are written in notation and tablature for the standard three-course mountain dulcimer (without the 6 1/2 or 1 1/2 fret in the fretboard), with chord symbols and complete lyrics. A knowledge of simple chording techniques is all that is needed to play the tunes. the tunings used are Ionian (DAA), Aeolian (DAC), and Dorian (DAG).

Book Field Hollers And Freedom Songs The Anthology

Download or read book Field Hollers And Freedom Songs The Anthology written by C. Sade Turnipseed and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking place annually in “the most southern place on earth,” aka, the “Cotton Kingdom,” the Sweat Equity Investment in the Cotton Kingdom Symposium offers a platform to honor, celebrate, and recognize the legacy of the African Americans who labored in the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta. The symposium intends to trigger discussions and provide a space where the histories and contributions of those Americans can be heard and learned from. Born in the antebellum south, the “soul of America” came to be through the tearful occupation of planting, chopping, picking and ginning cotton, where it was then brined within a system of enslavement, sharecropping and international trade that in so many ways provided America its “greatness.” Carefully compiled from works presented at the symposia, this anthology looks to expose the tortured “cotton-pickin’ spirit” embedded in America’s soul. A spirit that is rendered in song, chants, spoken word and field hollers, and revealed in this volume through the selected articles, lyric poetry, proverbs, speeches, slave narratives and workshop proposals. The rich and varied content of this book reflects the uniqueness of not only the Mississippi Delta but also the histories of those who lived and worked there.

Book Yaqui Deer Songs Maso Bwikam

Download or read book Yaqui Deer Songs Maso Bwikam written by Larry Evers and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the American Folklore Society’s Chicago Folklore Prize Yaqui regard song as a kind of lingua franca of the intelligent universe. It is through song that experience with other living things is made intelligible and accessible to the human community. Deer songs often take the form of dialogues in which the deer and others in the wilderness world speak with one another or with the deer singers themselves. It is in this way, according to one deer singer, that “the wilderness world listens to itself even today.” In this book authentic ceremonial songs, transcribed in both Yaqui and English, are the center of a fascinating discussion of the Deer Song tradition in Yaqui culture. Yaqui Deer Songs/Maso Bwikam thus enables non-Yaquis to hear these dialogues with the wilderness world for the first time.

Book excerpt: "Edge of Wilderness" encourages all of us to rise up against any idea that suggests we are not one in this world, created for the discovery of that truth. The book exposes the light of intricacies and the connected fractal nature of life allowing us to see that our shared existence is necessarily interdependent so that we rage against the darkness. This work is a prompt to explore the verities of the beaches we walk leaving no shell or stone unturned and to not only avoid getting lost or caught in the wilderness of pain and struggle but rather to reach for all the connections, relations and gifts of this experience; to live awake to the texture, color, music and rhythm of this our communion on earth.
