Book Wilde and Petronius

Download or read book Wilde and Petronius written by Morgan Crouch and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: A, language: English, abstract: It is no secret that the prominent aesthete Oscar Wilde was familiar with the work of Petronius of Rome. In fact, it's so far from a surreptitious topic that it remains undecided whether Wilde can be held responsible for a translation of Petronius's The Satyricon. His familiarity becomes quite apparent as well when we see Petronius's text specifically referenced within Wilde's work, The Picture of Dorian Gray. Wilde's texts were often thought to have subtle hints of homoeroticism while Petronius' The Satyricon demonstrated time and time again the blatant and unmistakably Roman depictions of homoeroticism. Furthermore, Wilde's texts were eventually condemned for their suggested homosexual connotations, while the homosexual events in The Satyricon were dismissed as standard. However, Wilde's reference of Petronius goes well beyond a mere scholarly allusion to demonstrate his well-read nature.

Book The Satyricon of Petronius Arbiter

Download or read book The Satyricon of Petronius Arbiter written by Oscar Wilde and published by . This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oscar Wilde, as a brilliant classics scholar, was well acquainted with The Satyricon. Furthermore, there is much internal evidence to indicate that the great erotic novel of the classical world, which first saw the light of day in Nero's Rome, exerted a profound influence on Oscar's Picture of Dorian Grey. We should not be surprised, therefore, that he would have produced this lively translation, which, like the man himself, still arouses controversy and debate among academics, but brings nothing but pleasure and entertainment to everyone else.

Book excerpt: This books includes summary, study guide, character list, themes etc are added as supplemental contents. The Picture of Dorian Gray is a Gothic and philosophical novel by Oscar Wilde, first published complete in the July 1890 issue of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine.Fearing the story was indecent, the magazine's editor deleted roughly five hundred words before publication without Wilde's knowledge. Despite that censorship, The Picture of Dorian Gray offended the moral sensibilities of British book reviewers, some of whom said that Oscar Wilde merited prosecution for violating the laws guarding public morality. In response, Wilde aggressively defended his novel and art in correspondence with the British press, although he personally made excisions of some of the most controversial material when revising and lengthening the story for book publication the following year. The longer and revised version of The Picture of Dorian Gray published in book form in 1891 featured an aphoristic preface-a defence of the artist's rights and of art for art's sake-based in part on his press defences of the novel the previous year. The content, style, and presentation of the preface made it famous in its own right, as a literary and artistic manifesto. In April 1891, the publishing firm of Ward, Lock and Company, who had distributed the shorter, more inflammatory, magazine version in England the previous year, published the revised version of The Picture of Dorian Gr

Book excerpt: This book offers perhaps the most comprehensive history of pantomime ever written. No other book so thoroughly examines the varieties of pantomimic performance from the early Roman Empire, when the term “pantomime” came into use, until the present. After thoroughly examining the complexities and startlingly imaginative performance strategies of Roman pantomime, the author identifies the peculiar political circumstances that revived and shaped pantomime in France and Austria in the eighteenth century, leading to the Pierrot obsession in the nineteenth century. Modernist aesthetics awakened a huge, highly diverse fascination with pantomime. The book explores an extraordinary variety of modernist and postmodern approaches to pantomime in Germany, Austria, France, numerous countries of Eastern Europe, Russia, Scandinavia, Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Chile, England, and The United States. Making use of many performance and historical documents never before included in pantomime histories, the book also discusses pantomime’s messy relation to dance, its peculiar uses of music, its “modernization” through silent film aesthetics, and the extent to which writers, performers, or directors are “authors” of pantomimes. Just as importantly, the book explains why, more than any other performance medium, pantomime allows the spectator to see the body as the agent of narrative action.

Book The Letters of Hart Crane 1916 1932 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Letters of Hart Crane 1916 1932 Classic Reprint written by Hart Crane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Hart Crane, 1916-1932 But far more compelling than distance or propriety as the domi nant force behind Crane's prolific composition of letters was an emotional impulse which drove him to discharge so much expres sive energy in a non-poetic form: his acquisitive need for sympathy, pity, understanding, affection a need accompanied by the be lief that these responses could be evoked with a persuasive explana tion in words. Let us not confuse this poignant situation with dis honesty or a huckster's fraudulency. Crane was, after all, a poet to whom language was paramount. The outcome was that even those of his letters which had been intended as geographical bridges, or as duties, speedily found themselves converted into detailed and nu inhibited recitations and exhortations. Examining the letters to his mother in this light, to choose one instance, we can-understand why, despite the profound mutual misunderstanding of which each was aware, Crane persisted in alternately cajoling, threatening, and in forming a basically-unresponsive correspondent.
