Download or read book Bacillus written by Colin R. Harwood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genus Bacillw; has a long history of importance, both from an economic point of view and as a source of experimental microorganisms. This volume critically reviews aspects of identification, molecular biology, and growth that are of impor tance for the current and anticipated future exploitation of members of this group. In addition, the volume includes a chapter on taxonomy, as the importance of good taxonomy is often not fully appreciated; on sporulation, since so many important products are produced concomitantly with this process and we are beginning to understand the mechanisms by which the process is controlled; and, finally, on the cell envelope, as we are only just beginning to appreciate the significance of dif ferences between the cell walls of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria for productivity and processing. The commercial importance of Bacillus lies mainly in the area of enzyme pro duction for the food, drink, and detergent markets. Increasingly, however, the ability of Bacillus to secrete proteins, coupled with its regulatory acceptability, has resulted in strenuous efforts to develop species of Bacillus as hosts for the produc tion of value-added heterologous proteins. Difficulties have often been encoun tered, indicating a need to divert more resources to improving our understanding of the molecular biology of members of this grou p. Experience with Escherichia coli, a far from ideal organism from a commercial point of view, suggests that an in creased investment in Bacillus is likely ultimately to be productive.
Download or read book Class 1 Oxidoreductases V written by Dietmar Schomburg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-10-20 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the Springer Handbook of Enzymes is to provide in concise form data on enzymes sufficiently well characterized. Data sheets are arranged in their EC-Number sequence. Each volume comprises one enzyme class, sometimes the enzyme classes have to be divided into several volumes. Considerable progress has been made in enzymology since the publication of the first edition (published as "Enzyme Handbook"): many enzymes are newly classified or reclassified. In the 2nd edition each entry is correlated with references and one or more source organisms. New datafields are created: "application" and "engineering" (for the properties of enzymes where the sequence has been changed). Altogether the amount of data has doubled so that the 2nd edition will consist of 39 volumes plus synonym index. This collection is an indispensable source of information for researchers in biochemistry, biotechnology, organic and analytical chemistry, and food sciences.
Download or read book Class 1 Oxidoreductases IX written by Antje Chang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-01-19 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Springer Handbook of Enzymes provides concise data on some 5,000 enzymes sufficiently well characterized – and here is the second, updated edition. Their application in analytical, synthetic and biotechnology processes as well as in food industry, and for medicinal treatments is added. Data sheets are arranged in their EC-Number sequence. The new edition reflects considerable progress in enzymology: the total material has more than doubled, and the complete 2nd edition consists of 39 volumes plus Synonym Index. Starting in 2009, all newly classified enzymes are treated in Supplement Volumes.

Download or read book Genetic and Metabolic Disease in Pediatrics written by June K. Lloyd and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic and Metabolic Disease in Pediatrics is a compendium of papers that discusses the problems of inborn diseases in terms of homeostasis. One paper traces "backward" from the disease phenotype to discover and investigate the gene, as well as moves "forward" from mutation in DNA to discover phenotypes or proteins connected with the disease. Specific genes are assigned to particular places (loci) on chromosomes that can manifest the presence or type of disease. Another paper examines a classical disease—osteogenesis imperfecta—pointing out that the aberrant collagen of osteogenesis imperfecta reflects mutation at chromosomes 7 and 17. Another paper shows that in osteogenesis imperfecta, Mendelian phenotypes lead to genes and their products as being involved in critical aspects of protein traffic in human cells. Several papers examine the inborn errors of metabolism covering the lacticacidemias, urea synthesis, the hyperphenylalaninaemias, and the hyperlipidaemias. Other papers investigate the effects of metabolic dishomeostasis caused by variant maternal genotypes on fetal development, the "androgen pathway, its known Mendelian variants
