Book excerpt: The Camper Book will captivate all those who dream of waving good-bye to the rat race from the window of their own moveable home, be it a camper, RV, travel trailer, camper van, or tiny camper. Not just for placid retirees anymore, camper culture has sprung up among simplicity-seeking millennials, retro-loving "glampers," sports and movie stars, aging hippies, contract workers, "road-schoolers," and others. Award-winning journalist Dave Hoekstra hit the road in his own custom camper van, named Bluebird, to explore the history, culture, subcultures, and future of camper life. Traveling and talking his way through US campsites, RV parks, landmarks, and communities, Hoekstra draws out revealing stories from all walks of life—from Americans who are downsizing material goods while upsizing spiritual pursuits to RV enthusiasts such as Grammy-winning singer-songwriter John Prine and Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon. A modern-day Studs Terkel, Hoekstra provides a delightful mix of oral history, in-depth reporting, and practical information, while photographer Jon Sall's beautiful color photographs illuminate the unique people, places, and rigs that typify camper life.

Download or read book Homesick and Happy written by Michael Thompson and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insightful and powerful look at the magic of summer camp—and why it is so important for children to be away from home . . . if only for a little while. In an age when it’s the rare child who walks to school on his own, the thought of sending your “little ones” off to sleep-away camp can be overwhelming—for you and for them. But parents’ first instinct—to shelter their offspring above all else—is actually depriving kids of the major developmental milestones that occur through letting them go—and watching them come back transformed. In Homesick and Happy, renowned child psychologist Michael Thompson, PhD, shares a strong argument for, and a vital guide to, this brief loosening of ties. A great champion of summer camp, he explains how camp ushers your children into a thrilling world offering an environment that most of us at home cannot: an electronics-free zone, a multigenerational community, meaningful daily rituals like group meals and cabin clean-up, and a place where time simply slows down. In the buggy woods, icy swims, campfire sing-alongs, and daring adventures, children have emotionally significant and character-building experiences; they often grow in ways that surprise even themselves; they make lifelong memories and cherished friends. Thompson shows how children who are away from their parents can be both homesick and happy, scared and successful, anxious and exuberant. When kids go to camp—for a week, a month, or the whole summer—they can experience some of the greatest maturation of their lives, and return more independent, strong, and healthy.

Download or read book The Drive written by Teresa Bruce and published by Seal Press. This book was released on 2017-06-13 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Drive follows Teresa Bruce on her 2003 road trip through Mexico and onto the Pan American Highway, in a rickety camper with her old dog and new husband in tow. Bruce first set off on the exact same route in 1973, her parents at the helm and their two young daughters in tow, as a reaction to the accidental death of their youngest child, Bruce's brother John John. Her attempt to follow the route, using her mother's travel journal as an anecdotal guide, is as much about her need for exploration as it is about trying to understand her parents and their pain, and to finally begin to heal her own wounds over the accident. Bruce is immensely talented in bringing scenery of Central and South America to life -- countries from Mexico and Guatemala to Bolivia and Argentina are detailed with her innate attention to detail and sense of storytelling. The Drive details a really incredible journey through these beautiful, at times corrupt and war-torn countries, across roads that are as likely to be barricaded by guerrillas or washed out by floods as they are to be passable. The Drive is travel writing at its best, combining moments of deep heartbreak with unimaginable joy over a panoply of unforgettable settings.

What she discovered was how her relationships played a key role in her mental, physical, and spiritual health. It began by ending friendships that were or never were healthy in the first place. She then discovered that it was not only the unhealthy friendships but it carried over to intimate relationships and professional relationships with her clients as well as other collegues. When she wanted to know why she had attracted so many people in her life that did not reflect her integrity her Homeopathic team placed Karen on a journey of self discovery. She began to realize that this pattern of relationships stemmed from the first relationships she made with her parents particularly her mother. She started to notice the significance of her relationship with her mother when she began the writing process of this book. Having all the intention of filling the pages with Alternative Health care Professionals, instead, she found herself writing about her mother. Prior to writing her book she read another book which was a guide for beginner writers and she knew she had to finish writing her thoughts on paper before she could continue as she thought, to write about Practitioners. However, Karen couldnt stop writing about her mother but continued to write and found that the writing process became very healing for her. This new journey became the source of what healing from Multiple Sclerosis was all about for Karen. What she gained from the result of her relationship with her mother was to learn to love herself. Once she did that she was able to break through her chrysalis and transform into a beautiful, spiritually-healed woman.

Download or read book Parables from the Tree of Life written by Pat S. Hilger and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parables from the Tree of Life depicts to us how nature often shows us the way. The story (somewhat autobiographical) follows a little girl growing up to become a young woman, learning spiritual lessons from reflections of the trees and with direction of her spiritual guide within. The book constitutes a narrative between the girl and the tree of life as she encounters the many trials and tribulations and occasionally triumphs in life, growing up in a large family in a culturally diverse setting. The 'tree of life' is the English name for arborvitae. The trees cover the Door County Wisconsin shoreline for many miles. They are not indigenous to North America, but were brought to us by sailors who made tea from their leaves to prevent scurvy. Thus they were truly named 'tree of life'. The story starts with the young girl growing up in central Illinois with frequent visits to North eastern Wisconsin. With a unique photograph of the adaptation of trees with each chapter coupled with the wisdom of the spirit, this book presents an inspirational and encouraging portrayal of contending with the many vicissitudes of life. The book is especially directed to those who live with depression and other forms of chronic pain, bravely keeping a smile on their faces and battling on with honest questioning and attempted integrity in life's situations. These stories show the girl encountering a number of religions and peoples, all the while striving to find a true course. Scars, and breaks and various anomalies of tree growth are viewed through the eyes of the spirit as positive and educational, though rarely easily acquired. This little book can help people on their life journey just as this little girl found her way from a young child into womanhood,

How many times had he told her she was not leaving? He didn't have the money to support that kind of foolishness when she could achieve the same goals right here in her hometown. Gillian started making her own decisions, eventually falling in love, only to have the love of her life completely destroy their lives together. She now faced the world as a single divorced parent where feelings of shame, guilt, and unworthiness overwhelmed her. But God led her out of these ashes and then into a new marriage, only to discover the man needed her labor more than wanting a loving wife, and the walls came tumbling down again. Now Gillian was a woman twice divorced, disappointed in her God, not sure who he really was or even if she wanted a relationship with him. What would she do with the broken pieces of her life?
