Book excerpt: Detecting the distant booms of many rifles, Will Trent turns his horse toward the noise, knowing that some soul is in trouble. He really had no intention of signing on to help the poor widow and her two young kids rebuild their wornout ranch, but having seen all the suffering and death during his three years with Lee's Army of Northern Virginia had been enough. He just couldn't ride out after breaking up the Comanchero raid. Not and leave a defenseless woman and two starving young'uns. His drifting would just have to wait a spell. Calling on some of his former Texas Cavalry partners for help, Will begins building Widow Ida McMoray's herd from mavericks he can trap out of the rough Devils River country. As the herd grows, Will runs afoul of the widow's brother-in-law, Clyde McMoray and his pack of cutthroats. It is McMoray's plan to someday own the ranch as well as lovely Ida. As Will's time on the ranch lengthens, so does his desire for the hand of Ida; yet he has nothing to offer her but his strong back and . . . his gun . . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The scriptural laws dealing with widows, strangers, and orphans are conventionally viewed as rules meant to aid the plight of vulnerable persons in ancient Israelite society. In Injustice Made Legal Harold V. Bennett challenges this perspective, arguing instead that key sanctions found in Deuteronomy were actually drafted by a powerful elite to enhance their own material condition and keep the peasantry down." Building his case on a careful analysis of life in the ancient world and on his understanding of critical law theory, Bennett views Deuteronomic law through the eyes of the needy in Israelite society. His unique approach uncovers the previously neglected link between politico-economic interests and the formulation of law. The result is a new understanding of law in the Hebrew Bible and the ways it worked to support and maintain the dehumanization of widows, strangers, and orphans in the biblical community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vidarbha—the parched heartland of central India—has become the foremost site of farmer suicides in the country. These suicides are the most striking indictment of the neglect of agriculture by the state. But the story of the farmers’ distress does not end with their death—it lives on in the experience of their widows who struggle to survive in the shadows. Widows of Vidarbha tells the story of 16 such widows who have been invisible to the state, the community, and even their families, and talks of their lost dreams, their diminished worldviews, and their helpless surrender to the conveniences of patriarchy. These narratives throw light on the dark and desperate corners of their invisible world, one that reflects the state of farm widows across the country.

Book The Coming Widow Boom

Download or read book The Coming Widow Boom written by James F and published by Robert Reed Publishers. This book was released on 2007-01-31 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well established that women live longer than men. According to the 1999 U.S. Census, nearly 700,000 women lose their husbands each year, and will be widows for an average of 14 years. The average age of a widow is only 56, and 25 percent are under the age of 45. These numbers are expected to rise dramatically as the Baby Boom generation moves into old age. Every widow asks, What should I do now? The Coming Widow Boom outlines a three-phase, eight-step path designed to facilitate confident financial decision-making, meeting fiduciary deadlines, and saving time and money, while also allowing for the natural grieving process and healing. There is a magnitude of issues that must be dealt with in order to maintain independence, income, and family integrity and wealth. This book provides answers for both men and women, and the professional advisors who guide them. Preparing for the unthinkable will also help couples make more money in the present.

Book Salty Wives Spirited Mothers and Savvy Widows

This book was released on 2012-12-19 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaging feminist hermeneutics and philosophy in addition to more traditional methods of biblical study, Salty Wives, Spirited Mothers, and Savvy Widows demonstrates and celebrates the remarkable capability and ingenuity of several women in the Gospel of Luke. While recent studies have exposed women's limited opportunities for ministry in Luke, Scott Spencer pulls the pendulum back from a negative feminist-critical pole toward a more constructive center. Granting that Luke sends somewhat "mixed messages" about women's work and status as Jesus' disciples, Spencer analyzes such women as Mary, Elizabeth, Joanna, Martha and Mary, and the infamous yet intriguing wife of Lot -- whom Jesus exhorts his followers to "remember" -- as well as the unrelentingly persistent women characters in Jesus' parables.

Book Luke Widows Judges and Stereotypes

Download or read book Luke Widows Judges and Stereotypes written by Febbie C. Dickerson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical narratives are not simply sacred stories for religious communities: They are stories that provide transformative insight into cultural biases. By putting historical criticism and reception history into dialogue with womanist biblical hermeneutics, Luke, Widows, Judges, and Stereotypes offers a provocative reading of Jesus’ parable about a widow who confronts a judge and obtains what she seeks by means of physical threat. Rather than simply reading the widow as the model for “one who prays always and does not lose heart” (Luke 18:1), Dickerson shows that read in the context of Luke’s wider narrative, the widow, domesticated and robbed both of her agency and moral ambiguity, is more likely demanding vengeance instead of justice. Likewise, rather than simply reading the judge as one "who neither feared God nor had respect for people" (Luke 18:2), Dickerson argues that the judge is both an ideal man and one who compromises standards of ancient masculinity. Then, reading both the widow and judge through African American stereotypes (Mammy, Jezebel, Sapphire, Cool Black Male, Master-Pastor, and Foolish Judge) that are used to degrade, debase, and control, and reading them into and in light of the parable, Dickerson demonstrates how the parable calls into question these stereotypes thereby producing new liberative readings.
